Hm. A typical japanese expression for shock, heard in almost every Anime ever, but a second longer than usual.

That got you butthurt today?^^
Oh, well...don't let it get you down.

Leave the people approving things alone, tho.
They're fine.

That's a pretty basic reaction for japanese people. Idk why tf would anyone even have a complaint about this moment out of all of the things.

hmmmm well it IS an expression, but no actual japanese dude would say it quite acted out like this^^
I think this is a pretty "basic" reaction for an Anime character. True.

Doesn't take away from the complaint beeing stupid af, of course.

I mean it's just an exaggerated version. You most likely won't hear this much exaggerated reaction in irl conversations but people still do them in japanese media, tv shows, etc. It's not that uncommon.

it's disbelief/shock/astonishment and quite typical, it should to be prologued when used for this purpose
complete explanation:

“eh” (ใˆใฃ or ใ‚จใƒƒ) is a common expression in Japanese and is widely used in everyday conversation. Its meaning and tone can vary depending on the context and intonation. Here are some typical uses:

1. Surprise or Shock

• ใˆใฃ?!
When something unexpected or shocking happens, “eh” can be used to express surprise or disbelief.
Example:
• A: ๆ˜Žๆ—ฅไผ‘ใฟใ ใ‚ˆใ€‚(Ashita yasumi da yo. - “Tomorrow is a holiday.”)
• B: ใˆใฃ?! ๆœฌๅฝ“ใซ๏ผŸ (Eh?! Hontล ni? - “Eh?! Really?”)

2. Confusion or Not Understanding

• ใˆใฃ?
When someone doesn’t hear or understand something, they might say “eh” to prompt clarification.
Example:
• A: ใ‚ใใ“ใซ่กŒใฃใฆใ€‚(Asoko ni itte. - “Go over there.”)
• B: ใˆใฃ? (Eh? - “Eh?” / “What?”)

3. Hesitation or Puzzlement

• ใˆใฃใจ (etto)
A variation often used to buy time while thinking or hesitating, similar to “um” or “uh” in English.
Example:
• ใˆใฃใจใ€ๆฌกใฏใฉใ†ใ—ใ‚ˆใ†… (Etto, tsugi wa dล shiyล… - “Um, what should I do next…”)

4. Disbelief or Skepticism

• ใˆใˆใฃ?!
A prolonged “eh” with emphasis can convey disbelief or doubt.
Example:
• A: ๅฎ‡ๅฎ™ๆ—…่กŒใซ่กŒใไบˆๅฎšใ ใ‚ˆใ€‚(Uchลซ ryokล ni iku yotei da yo. - “I’m planning to go to space.”)
• B: ใˆใˆใฃ?! ใ™ใ”ใ„ใญ๏ผ(Eeh?! Sugoi ne! - “Eeh?! That’s amazing!”)

Tone Matters:

• A short, sharp “ใˆใฃ” often signals surprise or confusion.
• A prolonged “ใˆใˆใˆใฃ” amplifies shock or disbelief.
• A softer “ใˆใฃ?” might indicate someone is politely asking for clarification.

It’s an essential and versatile part of Japanese communication, so you’ll encounter it often!

It's cringe.
Just like sudden, loud bowel movement used for purpose to shift subject of discussion into "let's eat something". Not sure which one is worse.

Honestly I agree with you. It's a dumb cliche. I don't think the expression itself is really cringe or stupid, it's the fact that everyone is saying it extremely loudly at the exact same time that makes it so dumb. It's way too exaggerated and that's what makes the trope bad. I wouldn't say it's the worst thing in the world but it feels really artificial so I can see where you're coming feom

No responses from the OP. This should be removed for trolling. It's official, re zero is too popular. Every other post in my home feed is re zero while the rest of the new shows get almost no discussion. The sheep will ruin any good thing for the others who have been enjoying it for years now.

His point is it's cultural and not just anime. It's also very far from cringe. Only thin cringe here is the original post

@DayRivia I really don't care about whether it is a cultural thing or not. In anime it is unbearably cringe and definitely does not translate when used as a comic relief. It basically assumes the generic "loud = funny".

Only cause they didn't translate it properly to "You whaaa?!" or "Bwah"

But reviewing the seen, it is indeed very cringe. Goes a second too long.

Lolol apologize for the random joke but when there's an opportunity then why waste it

But anyways my main point being, for example, in most anime, regardless of the world setting, a cool warrior almost always has a katana and is called a samurai. But we don't bat an eye because that's true and very common. Same with this 'Ehhh' reaction. It's a reality and not a cliche anime thing. A LOT of people use this. Men go with the small 'eh' and use it for comic timing while women go for a longer 'ehhhh'

@SATAN19 For the third time I say in this thread, that loud =/= funny.
And for the second time, that I don't care if it's a "real world thing", because it definitely does not work in anime as comic relief.

for that, I'll just say comedy is never objective. It is subjective. You can have an opinion but you can't expect the world to bend to your liking. So just deal with it ๐Ÿคท

It's just the usual cringey cliche which is usually found in anime for teenager audiences.

I'm not surprised this anime has it, especially with that kind of overreactive MC.
