Every now and then I come across lists like "best female characters" (of course they don't matter because the guy posts a regular collage of characters and people in the comments write nothing but irrelevant things like "character X is the best" and that's it xD) I most often see Frieren and Violet in these lists BUT, for reasons unknown to me, Violet is praised and Frieren is accused of "sneaking in" and honestly I don't understand at all, how can you like Violet and at the same time hate Frieren in a special way. These characters have similar assumptions, Frieren is accused of "lack of emotions" when Violet has them for most of the anime, even less and is more exaggerated in this respect. It seems to me that Frieren is in no way inferior to Violet and besides, Frieren's character is more than just "I have to learn emotions" idk

When I ask what Violet is better at than Frieren, I get an answer like "how can you ask such questions? you're stupid🥴" (something like that) so yeah... I'll ask here, why is Violet always considered a goat and Frieren is hated?

Honestly both of those girls are stoic bad choices. Even an average tsundere is better than a stoic girl. I am a man though so female taste will be far different. My best female character list would go to girls like Shamiiko, Squid Girl, or Jahy. Any Konosuba girl is fire too.

@Ripperdoc Or maybe you can tell me something more? I can also tell you "Violet is boring" and that's it, or that Maomao is boring because she's a Mary Sue who always gets everything right and even when you think she's not perfect (beauty, freckles) it turns out that this "not being perfect" was part of her perfect plan xD never mind, I'm not asking about the best character at all and your answer is a meaningless slogan

For me at least, it’s kinda hard to tell you which one is better. I am personally not a fan of stoic characters. It’s just not my cup of tea. What I do look for is the character growth and how the story of this character progresses.

I personally believe it’s unfair to compare these two characters yet. Violet’s story is finished, so I naturally look upon her more favorably. However, Frieran’s story isn’t over yet. We will see what the story can bring to the table. Once her story is complete, I think that a decision on who is better can be made.

Can’t answer that as I haven’t watch Violet Evergarden. I love Frieren tho not sure why she is considered hated. Maybe it’s because of the relationship with Hummel and she didn’t really accept his feelings. But that’s what makes Frieren such a good character, after his death, she realised that she never really considered his feelings the way he was, so she is now living life trying to understand people better and accept those for who they are. Her development is amazing and incredibly well written

Maomao from Apothecary Diaries is the best written female protagonist of the past decade and has the potential to be the best of all time. Violet Evergarden is also top tier. Characters like Frieren, Vladilena Milize and Tanya are a tier below

@Randz_1 I've seen opinions like "Frieren is bad because she's stuck in the past and can't move on" (this is obviously nonsense and yet it had a few thousand likes on Twitter), "Frieren is racist" (people don't think that ironically) or just "oh how can she not see that Himmel likes her" xD well... if so many people write such nonsense, then it's no wonder that Frieren is often hated in many places, I guess Violet is just easier to like and the quality of writing doesn't matter here xD

I don't think Maomao is one of the "better" ones (and the best in history is not a funny joke), she's just the easiest to like. Besides, such empty slogans "Character X is simply the best" do not contribute anything to the discussion xD

If you are talking about show vs show, it's a pretty close call between the two but it's hard to compare since they are different genres.

If you are talking girl vs girl (and this is from someone who's favourite show is Violet Evergarden and thinks Frieren is one of the best fantasies adaptations), they are miles behind a lot of other female characters in terms of attractiveness.

Finally, comparing one vs another, I think so far (as anime only - like most people), Frieren is not close in terms of writing as Violet. It can reach it at later stages, but because the show (it's in a different genre) has to make space to action and fights and it also develops very well other characters, Frieren just didn't have the moments/time to develop as Violet (who's show revolves around) did.

I love both characters the most

These two have very different Aura but also very similar.

They both are stoic and hard to read but at the same time they are so pure.

Violet and Frieren also have the same aura when the fight.

When they go to battle mode they gives the vibes " you don't want to mess with me"l or " I'm way OP for you"

But they have their differences

They both trying to learn about human emotions but for different ret

Violet also tries to learn about feelings only to understand the 3 words Major said to her.

She's more romantic and pure hearted.

Frieren even if the ship with Himmel exists she's doing for all of her older companions equally.

Also the fact that she's an elf it's a bit more hard for her to understand human emotions.

Also she has more humour and childish vibes from Violet.

If with Violet you laugh 1 time with Frieren you laugh 10.

Also both characters help other people's with their problems.

But Frieren she's doing mostly adventures with a beautiful aftermath.

With Violet from the beginning until the end it's about emotions.

In the end they have a lot of similarities and differences

But I love them both the most.

@IOANNIS1940 I agree with that but Frieren also does it for her new companions, she tries to be a better mother/mentor for Fern, sometimes she doesn't understand her but despite this misunderstanding she does what seems right, additionally despite having problems understanding some things she is still a wise 1000 year old elf who, thanks to her philosophy and approach, can inspire other people.

i can't tell you why people downplay frieren (although I think it's because they are annoyed of frieren as a series being #1 ) but I do think Violet is better. Her development touched me more but the comparison is also kind of unfair since frieren only has one season right now while violet evergarden is already a finished story.

Honestly I don't even think these characters are THAT similar, it's mostly just surface level analysis merchants in the anime community.

But as someone that much prefers Violet I would say her introspection is just way better and each individual scene feels like it has more value. A lot of Violet's character arc is really relatable in a way Frieren's wasn't as much and it really feels like in 12 episodes she has a much fuller journey than Frieren has in over double. Also she's just way prettier

Both aren't very different, but they focus on different things. For Violet, it's more about finding her feelings, while for Frieren, they tried to explain adventures and mentorship between characters. So for some people, Frieren is just boring. But in my opinion, they are both top of their genres. Frieren is fun while Violet is sympathetic.

@Sports_Friday Give me some examples because I don't understand what you mean, I can also say that something SEEMS to me and it seems to me that most of these scenes consist of cheap tear-jerking with cheap tricks, overdramatized monologues/dialogues intended to give the impression of "greater value" that wasn't there xD I'm curious what is more believable in Violet than Frieren to you? What does "believable" mean anyway? Oh...does the completed story (journey) of the characters seem more complete to you? Really? Frieren is prettier👌 maybe I'm biased but not more than you xD

@Ba-Cii10 Yes, this is why I started with they are not even that similar shows/characters. One is a a dedicated character drama and the other feels like something much closer to Aria. It's mostly personal preference which one people like more and I didn't personally enjoy Frieren being old and detached as much as other people but very much liked the overdramatized aspects of Violet.

I think Violet gets more hype because people become more attached to a character in a dedicated drama like that with how emotional it is

@Sports_Friday You're right, my "analysis" (which wasn't an analysis but a hot take xD) was a bit exaggerated. Of course it's about personal preferences, I just wanted to read something more than "character X is better and that's it" that's why I created this post.

The reason Violet is generally a better protagonist character comes from relatability, Violet Evergarden generally is a story about grief, purpose and empathy. A lot of people really love how she portrays survivors guilt. Furthermore clearly she's also very depressive throughout it, a lot of people relate to the feeling of longing for a partner whether they are passed away or simply an ex. Furthermore the audiences relationship with Violet is significantly more intimate compared to Frieren who we almost always see with other charcters when we get a lot of scenes of Violet alone. Frieren is not a bad Main character per say, but obviously a significant step below in terms of relatability.

@BETTY_ "Violet Evergarden is overall a story about regret, purpose, and empathy" "many people can relate to the feeling of missing a partner, whether they've passed away or are simply an ex" the same could literally be said about Frieren

Frieren is slow burn show with lot of mundane moments where Violet(I haven’t watched it) from what i can tell is more on drama side which is supposed to make you cry, thats where the difference is. It's not about which character is better, it's just that most people prefer drama over slow pace.

Both Violet and Frieren are endearing characters. Im sure Frieren is definitely not hated per say, but she probably falls victim to the anime's popularity I guess.

Between Violet and Frieren, imo their story and genre play a substantial role in depicting their character. Personally, this is where I think Violet has a better character profile than Frieren.

In the story of Violet Evergarden, we see how "love" can take the shape in many forms. It is not just Violet having a hard time interpreting what "love" is because she is poor at dealing with emotions, but her job as a ghostwriter going through many others' lives also helps serving the narrative that "love" itself is hard to convey and understand. Yet, with every step of her journey, experiencing others' joy, anger and sorrow etc. , Violet slowly starts developing and showing her own emotions. At long last, she is finally able to fully express herself and her love for Gilbert.

On the other hand, Frieren's longevity has worn out her sensitivity to stimulations. As a result, her actions seem to be inattentive and out of touch. But with every reminiscence of her past relationships with others, we slowly see her realise and learn from the past. This is then reflected by her interactions with Fern and Stark.

Although they are similar in the sense that both are bad at handling feelings, being a love story, Violet simply has a more complete character because she is literally the embodiment of the show. They did put a lot of thinking into building Frieren's character, but it is not as full as Violet's. If it had delve deeper into discussing her long life and show her changes more, it would definitely be more impressive. That doesn't really affect the story telling so it's not a problem at all but rather just my nitpick only tbh.

That's odd honestly because while I love violet evergarden, violet being so emotionless and not even understanding what emotion was was just off-putting to me as a character. Even a toddler understands at least superficially what emotions are. I'm not really sure how anyone can love a character like that, man or woman.

And yes I know that's how she was intentionally written. Doesn't make it any less off-putting to me. I honestly think the clone troopers from Star wars are better examples of child soldiers bred for war and PTSD than she is, as they at least understand what emotion is, and they're fully cloned unlike violet.
