Although this was mentioned in an earlier episode, I believe it's quite clear that the man in his dreams is actually himself. It's highly likely that this figure is either him from an alternate universe or the future. Considering we see him die in the opening prologue, we can assume he's literally gone for good. This version of him likely harbors a grudge, perhaps against demons or the system that took his family or others away from him. Alternatively, as Lulu suggested, it could also be a manifestation of the devil in his heart
