I was told this series is a power fantasy and I am sure that is where it's headed.

But having seen the first 2 episodes, this whole statue thing was itching the survival / puzzle solving part of my brain so damn hard, I fucking LOVED IT.

The feeling that the characters were hopeless, dying one by one, just trying to figure out how the hell they can survive, my two favourite genres are mystery and thriller, and this whole event was so damn cool.

Now, I know for a fact that this is sadly not what the show is through out the whole thing, but I just have to know, is there any more parts that are anything like this?

Yeah, that's exactly what attracted the first few fans of the WebNovel, and what made a few clicks at the start of the Manhwa.
Unfortunately, it goes in a complete different direction right after, and you can already see that with Episode 03. There is no survival horror vibe anymore, now it's a straight up power fantasy.

@Alexioos95 Damn... I'm so sad about that!

Not that I can't enjoy a good turn your brain off power fantasy with great visuals and action.... but like, what episode 2 was doing is definitely leagues more interesting to me.

oh well, it is what it is I guess.

It's not a survival horror tho, but simply a post-apo fantasy.

Nothing is confirmed, it's still only a leak. Yes the leaker is extremely reliable, but that's all.

@APolygons2 I felt the same way. I absolutely enjoyed the puzzle aspect and the allure of the feeling they might all fail. Just for it to turn into an RPG about leveling. I know it fits the title. I just feel disappointed what it could have been from the first 2 episodes.

.............For what it's worth....Much later on (and I kind of doubt these first 12 episodes will reach that point considering the pace this is going)

but like everyone else has already voiced the survival/puzzle solving feels from ep1-2 don't get so "epic" as far as I can recall....

unless you count....well...never mind It's been too long since I read that far back...

Typically there is one more part that I think has quite similar intensity as this one, Ant arc. Well, the intensity exists up until our mc "arises".

Rest is just a power fantasy.

While the series might not keep the puzzle solving aspect that you mention, I feel like it's not fair to say that it turns into a straight-up power fantasy after episode 2. The author had everything, including the ending, planned out from the beginning of writing the novel. Which means that a lot of things that appear generic on the surface, such as his gamer system and the gates, actually get a proper explanation.

The story is packed with mysteries, such as why the gates started to appear, why humans began gaining superhuman powers, why Sung Jinwoo is the only character with a game system, why he specifically got picked to be a player, what the nature of his powers is, why some of the things in the series act weirdly around our main character etc.

The reason I fell in love with this story was because I found it really fun and engaging to spot and pick up on all the different clues that would eventually lead to the big reveal and the climax at the end of the story.

It also helped that the main character actually has a personality, motivations and is able to independently make difficult choices while also sticking to only one girl and not amassing a pointless harem filled with pointless characters. And there is no untasteful fanservice either!! (at least not in the manwha, hope it stays that way)

If you're on the fence about the series, I would highly recommend that you give it a chance. It might not have the worlds deepest plot, but it sure as heck is just a lot of fun!

Do you have a source for that ?

It's more than extremely rare for an Author to have everything planned beforehand, and successfully do his story. That's especially the case with published works, hosted by a professional platform. Of course, they have a general direction in head, but that's all, generally. And looking at the comments Chugong made everytime he pushed a chapter, it really does looks like he just kept improvising everyday.

Looks like damage control, or at the very least retro-active mystery, but why not.

Hi, @APolygons2! I got the fkn perfect recommendation for people like us who love these survival, mystery, thriller, and action like the first two episodes of Solo Leveling showed. However, what I'm about to recommend is Korean manga (colored panels!) and not anime. But please, don't let that distract you from not experiencing the same type of excitement as you got when you watched the first two episodes of Solo Leveling. It's called Pick Me Up! Infinite Gacha and it's a combination of SAO and Maze Runner. Now the title sounds extremely dumb, generic, and shit, but (!) I promise it will definitely exceed your expectations (trust me). It includes a refreshing and unique concept, top-tier and beautiful art, high-packed action, tense moments, perma-deaths, OP protagonist, teamwork, puzzle solving, near-death experiences, survival, mystery, unpredictableness, hardcore difficulty, and game system. Now it is a power fantasy... HOWEVER, it doesn't rely on being a power fantasy to be good compared to Solo Leveling!

Now here is a simplified description and some examples for you to get hooked and not miss out on this hidden gem (spoilers ofc). The concept: people who are summoned to an island must climb a 100-floor hardcore-difficulty tower. On each floor, a handful of chosen people will get teleported to an unknown location and must complete a mission goal for that specific floor, failure results in perma-death. Each 5th floor is a boss floor, here are some examples (without spoiling the solution):
- Floor 5 (chapter 9) [Mission Type: Survival] [Objective: Survive the horde of enemies! Goblin X 1800]. Description: a party of 5 people must survive for 30 minutes against 1000+ goblins in a destroyed medieval city setting (this shit is tense asf).
- Floor 10 (chapter 26) [Mission Type: Defend] [Objective: Stop the fall of the city]. Description: 10 people and 350 NPC soldiers must defend a large medieval city from being destroyed by thousands of goblins (more dangerous than floor 5). This one sure is impossible as wtf can 10 people do in this situation... here the puzzle-solving aspect is being shown (also tense asf).
- Floor 15 (chapter: 46) [Mission Type: Guard] [Objective: Protect a certain individual]. Description: 5 people are teleported to a fully alive medieval city with easily thousands of inhabitants. Who they must protect isn't specifically mentioned... meaning it could be anybody meaning it is practically impossible to solve (or is it?).

I surely hope I got you excited to read this hidden gem Manhwa (manga but Korean) and experience the same kind of feeling as you got from the first two episodes of Solo Leveling. It currently has 78 chapters and you can read it online (u should be able to figure it out, but message me if u don't know). Also, if you haven't watched "The Maze Runner" movie, then highly recommend you (it has the same kind of tense/survival/puzzle-solving/mystery feeling)

@MathieMK I read the manhwa, not novel, so if you did read the novel and there's some massive, and I do mean MASSIVE differences, then disregard the following. But I am quite confused by your entire statement here? From having read the entire manhwa it did not feel in the slightest that the author had it all planned out. If he did I, would be more shocked because of how all over the place it is and how many things gets forgotten and glossed over. The ending...Well...Let's just not talk about the ending for the sake of our and everyone in this mortal realm's sanity. It was just a gigantic cop-out.

And you're saying the main character actually has a personality. That one made me actually drop my jaw and it's not coming back. The biggest criticism I have towards the series is exactly that the MC doesn't have a personality. Once he turns into edgelord Kirito 2.0, he's as blank as can be. He shows little to no emotion towards anything.
have more personality than him.

As for motivations, I struggle to see much there. I mean sure he has motivations like any character in any series, but they are extremely barebone and it's more of a way to serve the story than to actually serve the character. For instance:

And while it doesn't have fanservice in the sense of explicit imagery. It does essentially have what's adjacent to it. Most female characters in the series serves only as tools. They are there to be saved by him and/or swoon over him.

I can't remember where, but I remember reading it somewhere in the period after the novel was compleated and a lot of people were complaining about the ending that the author had planned it from the beginning. (I don't know how to put spoilertag so I don't want to get spesific)

Of course, he hardly had every single detail down from day 1, but he had already decided on the backstory for certain powers in the universe and such from the beginning.

And it wouldn't make sense if he was just making shit completely up as he went because there is a lot of hints and foreshadowing throughout the story that falls in line with its conclusion.

Yes I have read both the novel (though that was a couple of years ago) and the manhwa. And while they are pretty similar (with the novel being a bit more detailed and fleshed out), I do know that the ending was way more rushed in the manhwa due to the artists' health problems, which he sadly ended up succumbing to in the end.

And when it comes to my comment on Jinwoo having personality, I mostly meant it in comparison to all other isekai/fantasy/shonen male protagonists that play into the self-insert troupe. My standard has gotten so low thanks to these that Jinwoo is a breath of fresh air for me. πŸ˜…

And while I can see what you mean with fanservice, I still think it's done more tastefully than other shows where all female characters blast their bare chests all over the screen and there are at least one panty shot per episode.

I'll be the first to admit that Solo Leveling is by no means a literary masterpiece; the story isn't mindblowing and lifealterings, and Jinwoo is far from the most complex character I know. But I still think the series is just a lot of genuine fun, it made my day every time a chapter would drop, and still does with the release of the anime.

And for those that shit on the ending: I actually thought it was a good way to conclude the story.

The puzzle room was a one time only thing. But the massacre is going to regularly come back in some form.
There's also a lot of mysteries throughout the series. For example, what are the gates? Why are they popping up? What's a player? Why is he different from the regular hunters? Where's his dad? Why is his mom in a coma?
Also, the fights have a lot of suspense and energy. You're going to regularly say "how's he going to survive this?".

You could say that he's in a hopeless tight spot again, because in episode 3 he's locked inside a dungeon without any help, without any healing or a weapon. And the enemies name is red which means its stronger than he is.

Well, a power fantasy will be more or less about MC being OP.
If it doesn't lasts, fans will probably get mad since they would probably watch it for the OP of the MC.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.
