I think the dub is completely fine, even counting the original Naruto.
I feel like people take too much of a dump on dubs. Nowadays, I definitely trust Sentai more than FUNi for minimal tampering, but other than that, I go off the "watch an episode of both and decide" and honestly, I have been begun to notice sub can have familiar voices too.
People always say "those same twelve voices" in dub, but fact of the matter is, we just know the language and naturally we can spot them out better. Once I began to understand Japanese better, I could hear some similar voices. They definitely have a wider range of them, but that didn't stop me from recognizing some over time.
Other than that, they're quick to point out script changes. What dub doesn't do this? Though I will admit Kobayashi had some very dumb ones in its dub and I will never forget the horrendous "GamerGate" line from Prison School. But thankfully, script changes are genuinely trying to be adaptive a lot of the time and not changing the context. If I had to note one more, probably also watch Nichijou in sub. The type of comedy it goes for just makes the most sense that way. And the acting is far better.
Speaking of, another is inferior acting. More common in the earlier days, though I do miss a handful of English VAs who retired during the era of "anime is for kids only" and never got to mature with the industry. And sometimes, a voice may not fit. I understand this one a bit more. But I feel like a lot of dubs have pretty good acting. I am used to seeing it in action, drama or just more story based ones a lot more than any other genre, but they are trying. If you want an in-depth video on this, Nasu has a great one on YouTube called "Anime Dubs Aren't Cringe, Anime Is" that is worth checking out.
Overall, I feel Naruto is solid in dub. I actually prefer it that way, key word "prefer" as to say I don't think the sub is bad at all. Sorry for the rant, but I grow tired of seeing people bash dubs for the same reasons. And as I said earlier, try an episode of each to decide. If you're impatient, change the language multiple times in one watch. |
