Mecha anime, help me find the unfindable!

Ok, i know the genera is quite expansive but i hop eone of you has the anwer i'm searching for.
It's an older anime that I watched years ago, about a kid (i think, and the gender i don't remember) that finds this abandoned mecha, or spaceship while living in this multy level (maybe) space colony. the object (mecha or spaceship) is then restored by the kid.
Now speculating from really distant and fragmented memories, the kid strikes a bond with the supposed mech.
The style is gundam esque, as in fairly grounded and from my memory of it not recent, atleast pre 2015 but i don't wanna exclude anything.
To anyone that is willing to lose a bit of their time i'm gonna be incredibly greatful, been tryna search here and there for years now but can't seem to find an answer and i'm going insane!

Now that I think about it, your description would probably fit most entries in the Yuusha/Brave franchise.

@H_Castaigne These look really interesting but what i remember was less "toony in style", some of the traits and the visual in my head remind me a bunch of gundam 0080, the robot bond and the feeling i get thinking of it as a zaku seams to be there, but the staion is not it, and the visuals are a bit too oldtimey, probably something more recent. I'll continue my research tomorrow, Thanks for the help so far!

I'm afraid I'm unable to assist you with a direct answer. However, have you considered going through the (rather short) 26 pages of Mecha Anime listed on this website? Doing so should only take you about 20 minutes to do-- and should (hopefully) upturn the show you're seeking.
