Gungrave (2003) or Requiem For The Phantom (2009)? Which one did you like more?

Both were written by Yosuke Kuroda (Gen Urobuchi helped him for RFTP but he was not the main writer contrary to belief even if he created the original story in 2000, RFTP's end was Kuroda's idea as confirmed by Gen in a french interview) and I think both are great but they're different for the most part, Gungrave was more focus on climbing the ladder, friendship, loyalty, romance and over-the-top action with a blend of supernatural which I found cool and entertaining (only for the necrolyzers). RFTP is more a psychological drama with a mix of symbolism, existentialism, politics, characters and plotting which I found very interesting.

Gungrave was more grounded and its main character and antagonist were more badass but RFTP was more intriguing and its main and secondary characters were more sophisticated to me (especially Claudia McCunnen, Ein/Elen and Raymond McGuire) but Gungrave's secondary characters were bland to me except Bear Walken, Burns, Randy, Dr.Tokioka and Bunji Kugashira. OST is better in RFTP but Gungrave's fits the story enough, animation looks more cool in Gungrave but the world-building is better in RFTP. One major issue I had with Gungrave was that there is no interesting female character to me, I did not care about Big Daddy, Maria and their daughter Mika. The Harry's disciples' supernatural powers were meh to me. Bob Poundmax and Ballardbird Lee were uninteresting.

Gungrave is nearly at the end of my Top 20 anime but RFTP is my 2nd overall favorite anime. I think RFTP had a more interesting story even if it was more uneven (I love uneven stories) but Gungrave had great action and grounded setting nonetheless.

I’ve been wanting to watch Gungrave. If the writing is good enough, I’ll certainly enjoy it as it would have the high production quality of an old Madhouse show. Can’t say the same about Requiem for the Phantom though; Bee Train shows rarely look good.

Not all Madhouse anime have great animation though, and Phantom's soundtrack is easily better. Just don2t forget to skip the first episode if you watch Gungrave.

True, but older Madhouse shows usually look amazing, and I’ve seen some clips of it too. Why should I skip the first episode btw?

I must be one of the only ones who doesn't like Phantom, Gungrave is a sensational anime, one of the coolest anime Madhouse made in the 2000s
