For Aqua, the unconditional love and emotional support that Akane gave him was his salvation. There's a reason why it's when he turns away from Akane, and thus his happiness, and not when he finds out his father is still alive that he gains the perma black stars.

Their conversation in chapter 97 look more disturbing than romantic because at that point Aqua knew his father is alive and he also suspicious at Akane. I mean it's clearly that he want to know if Akane know about his father. Also we need to remember that Aqua put GPS tracker on her so it's just obvious he stalking Akane.
