Q : They will know, right?
Director : No, they won't, I'm serious. It is not for the sake of the animation, but for the sake of the story. The change from Cid to Shadow is not only in his costume, but also in his height, build, hair length, and eyes. It's easy to understand if you look at the settings. In other words, it is not a "disguise" but a "metamorphosis" or "transformation".
Of course, people in that world cannot instantly change their height and weight. If there is a person with a clearly different physique in front of them, that is a different person. They will not be able to recognize them. We, who are looking at it from omniscient point of view, are able to tell by the color, the voice, and the transformation scene, but there is a difference in consciousness for the people who are seeing it in front of their eyes and those who are not. This is the reason why Shadow is not exposed. Of course, this is just an excuse I prepared for the fact that I had to leave out the mask due to the work schedule.
What about the girls? I have a feeling that if they were to wear hoods and their silhouettes were uniformly inconspicuous, they wouldn't be noticed too. If they just put on masks as in the original story, it would be obvious from their hair style.
In case you are wondering, there is no problem when ShadowGarden comes out showing their face...because there are "no witnesses". Like in episode 2 or 4....

Also, same reason why Superman's disguise as Clark Kent is perfect.
Nobody would expect someone so unassuming and plain to be so powerful and imposing. That's the real reason why Cid is doing his best to maintain his "background character" persona.

I don't see how any of those things he listed actually change when he's in Shadow form, but alright. lol
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

Shadow's hair is longer than Cid's and his eyes are red. I didn't really notice the height difference in the anime, but Cid and Shadow's height difference is more visible in the light novel illustrations, in the LN Shadow was already quite tall when Cid was a child.
Not only Shadow, Epsilon can also change her body, not only her boobs, she changes the size of her hips and the length of her legs

There's a reason Epsilon does that, Cid really shouldn't have any height difference from Shadow, but I suppose changing his eye color is reasonable.

I just checked, and his hair seems the same, it's just moving more when he's Shadow, and his eye color is the same, but can appear more reddish.

Nice thread. The main question of THE LN readers is why they didn't animate them with their masks on and similar things to hide their face.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

As the director himself said, It is an excuse to cover up bad scheduling.
An excuse doesn't mean it's a lie, what he's saying about Shadow changing his appearance seemed genuine.

I always just assumed it was visual, plus Cid is the embodiment of a background character, he could never be suspected as Shadow. lol

I wasn't calling it a lie. I was just pointing out that the director came up with these reasons mainly to cover up bad scheduling.

I might have misunderstood your original comment as something like, "I have never seen these changes take place. How is the Director telling this with a straight face" or something like that. Totally my bad if it wasnt what you meant.

I literally haven't seen any of those changes take place, so maybe he is bullshitting, which would make sense if it was just a scheduling excuse. lol

The director is straight up taking the piss out of every idiotic "Oh but why doesn't anyone recognise him" poster out there.

I like it.

If you're too dumb to understand the way this type of "disguise" works, then you very much deserve to be ridiculed.

I feel like a lot of people need to train their ability to engage in "suspension of disbelief" in media...

...especially when talking about animation, where character traits are reduced to the bare minimum in order to maximize the time spent polishing other more important areas.

But I digress.
