all of those are correct in their own way, there's no definitive meaning it just comes down to what each person wants it to mean i suppose

i mostly just use it for currently publishing manga that i got caught up with at the time but don't currently follow, or if it's something i brought a certain amount of volumes physically but don't own the rest so therefore i haven't gotten further than that yet

^ Yeah, it usually depends on the person using it, I know some people who like to use their on-hold list as a high priority ptw list.

I use it in both anime and manga lists as a list to note series that I have stopped watching/reading but will eventually pick back up.

Like all parts of MAL's lists functions, it's up to the user to decide what each section means and what they'll use it for. I've always interpreted it as "I'm taking a break from X". Usually I've seen people put long anime (50+ eps) and manga (100+ chapters) on hold, like One piece for example. For me personally, I use the "On Hold" section for manga on hiatus' or longer anime I'm not in the mood to continue at the moment.

It usually means you decided to pause watching/reading certain animanga, you are taking a break. For me it is more like "I'll check this manga later when it has more chapters" or this manga is on haitus.

Yeah, “On hold“ for me is kind of like, “I don’t want to read this right now… but I might later” whereas a “drop” is like, “Yeah, I don’t think I will ever read this.”

"Temporarily stop reading" is how I view it. I just put series that I might pick up again in the future and I think are good enough to not drop completely.

I guess everyone has a different definition of what they mean by that...

As for the pending animation, I'm putting it on hold because I don't know if I'll be able to watch the whole thing.

As for the manga, I have it on hold because I plan to continue and read it someday, even though I have only the middle volume in hand. Or, I'm putting it on hold because it's in serialization or on hiatus and not yet completed.

It depends on you. I usually don't use it at all. It's easier to just add them on reading list.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

I use it for... exactly what the name suggests. I want to continue the work in question at some point - just not right now.

I used that section for series that i read in the past but kinda take an indefinite break for several reasons. I will come back to it at some point when i feel like it

I think it really depends on the person. Usually, the series I put in on hold are the ones that I don't consider myself to be actively reading/watching. There are a few manga series where I'm waiting for the physicals to catch up or waiting for a new volume that I've stuck in on hold for the time being. The fun thing about it is that it can mean whatever you want it to mean.
I'm either crashing out or fujoing out.
