i feel the same way
it was sad but not really full of emotions
tbh i cried more in naruto and in this anime i only let some tears out when i saw his backstory
so the romance thing wasnt rly sad for me

I don't think people should consider this neither sad nor romantic, not because it fails in both but rather because it's not the main focus. This show is more about overcoming trauma, finding a sense in yourself and helping others overcome their problems, communicating emotions through music and colours, with a kind and poetic tone.

Romance and bittersweetness/sadness are strong in this show but those aren't the most defining traits. It's like saying football/soccer's defining trait is that you hit the ball with your head. Yes, you'll do that eventually but that's not the most important thing

I like this anime but to me it’s not a romance and with that part I agree. They are only 14 after all and there aren’t any romantic feelings built, more like fascination or something. Anime IS sad though, I think I didn’t cry because I simply don’t cry on anime but it clearly touched me.

Personally music it worked on me. I cried a lot during last perfomence with Kaori's death. Not because she died but music means a lot for me that's why I was sad. It's not the most saddest or romantic anime ever. They are better in this respect. But if you get involved in the story and the music, you'll probably shed tears

Her dying wasn’t the sad part, it was how she deteriorated before that had me in tears. I found piano music boring as hell but I still loved every other aspect of the show.

I have talked to another dude that disliked this show… he said he viewed kaori as a weird messed up person for hitting Kose when Kose has traumatic experiences with an abusive mother. I watched this as an innocent child and gave it a 10 as my first anime, but yeah. This show is actually kind of easy to dislike for some people.

The reason this show is so sad is because of how Kaori got Kose out of the trenches and able to play again, just for herself to start losing her ability to play and die at the same exact time. I don’t necessarily think the romance was great in this show, but her losing her only joy she had left was heartbreaking just as Kose regained his.

We all have different perspectives in different fictions.

It is alright to not like a popular anime. I fell asleep watching popular anime such as Attack On Titan and My Hero Akademia multiple times.

I thought it was overhyped i felt way more emotional watching Clannad, Gintama and Bleach, even shows like Pokemon and Dragon ball which left me with tears.

Chizurus backstory from rent a girlfriend season 2 hit me way harder than this show, no joke

Yeah I wasn’t the biggest fan of the show. Still good but not amazing for me personally. The ending definitely was sad though.

The saddest anime I’ve ever watched is Violet Evergarden.

I felt more emotional for the main characters background story because of what he had to endure and what he went through. it was somehow relatable and I cried a bit. more than I have on any series probably. the romance is fine and they're quite cheeky with how they went for the ending.

[spoiler for rest of this thread]

The ending was executed exactly like how plastic memories did, pretty much giving you the ending but raising your hopes and hitting with reality and finishing it up with a final letter and having the other mc move on. a pretty strong way to play with people. I think that's why she's probably really liked.
but I like trauma and people dealing with it so that's my reason to be here.
