Having just finished the 3rd volume of the light novels, I love the story and can't wait for the anime. But I think the reason I love the story is that I've seen it before. The Angel Next Door doesn't just borrow from Horimiya, but takes the story and just changes the names of the characters. Now there are one or two bits taken from Toradora, and there are detailed descriptions of food prepared by Hori, I mean Mahiru. But otherwise this is simply a straight rip-off of Horimiya.

No worries here. I love Horimiya, and I had a blast reading The Angel Next Door. I hope the anime can live up to "original".

Hori and Mahiru have basically nothing in common asides from them being "popular", which in the case of Mahiru is not even like she is a popular girl with a bunch of friends like Hori.

And I don't see much in common between Amane and Miyamura either.

Also I think Horimiya spends way more time focusing on side characters as compared to this series.

Curious to what you were talking about so I read some of the manga and I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Like...its not even the same plot.

I don't think they need to pay any royalties as they are pretty distinct in terms of character development.

Shina is like a untouchable Goddess for all the people in the school always carrying a fake smile and pretending while hori has friends, she is not pretending, she is not that very popular unlike Remi.

Read the WN of Angle Next Door (LN3 leaves around ch 90) and just see how more wholesome this is and the development is really really heartwarming and amazing and Amane is an amazing kid he knows how to be responsible. Angle Next Door also focuses more on the main characters than the development of the side characters. While Horimiya focuses a lot on the side characters as well.

And I do love horimoyi โค, I have watched is over 12 times now and read the manga twice, it's a show that always has me craving for more. There are many times that I feel that I need to watch something like Horimiya but there are no anime as good as that

thats like comparing water to wine.
they are the same thing a liquid, but have very different taste.
there are similarities especially when comparing miyamura and amane, being the “i am actually very handsome, i just want to hide it” character. but there are way more differences.
i think the word u meant to use was “inspired” 10shi was slightly inspired by horimiya not rip-off because 10shi was fairly unique.
(btw i looked it, horimiya manga started in 2012, while 10shi WN started in 2018. wouldve been really funny if you said 10shi is a rip-off of horimiya if 10shi was released first.)

Hori has a lot of friends but Mahiru has no friends~
Because Hori is really loud as compared to Mahiru~

Horimiya has a lot of characters while The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten has 7 characters (5 in school).

Hori is not as depressed as Mahiru~

EDIT: There is a new LN that has a girl wanting to be spoilt by a boy:

I never thought of Horimiya at all when reading the Light Novel.

If anything, this reminds me of much safer and wholesome version of Hige wo Soru (that anime with Sayu) because of how similar both female MC's family problems and some other things like both cooks for their male MC.

If I used Microsoft Edge Direct Translation, the title will be "Living with a cool goddess, about being too spoiled and spoiled".

I appreciate all the different perspectives on The Angel. I accept that I am probably overthinking this. But I love how Japanese authors and mangaka take standard outlines, tropes, and stock characters, and then produce something original and beautiful. Reading the first 3 volumes of the English edition, The Angel Next Door was a story I could not put down. I spent the weekend binging on this light novel, stopping every few chapters to blow my nose and dry my tears. The story is moving, and I am completely obsessed with how these two kids are going to get their romance to progress. I also love Horimiya, and could not help but note how both authors used similar characters and plot devices to create these wonderful romances. I am hopeful that the anime is as successful as the light novels. Like Horimiya, it has the potential to be a blockbuster!

"similar characters and plot devices" Pardon me but can you elaborate on that? On what part are the characters similar, especially between Hori and Angel. And plot devices, as the question itself says. Thanks.

The series is new so yes there is still not a widely used community English title nor an official one. But yes, translated it goes along like "Living with a cool goddess, Spoiled her too much she became clumsy" or something like that.

Like Hori, the angel Mahiru leads a sort of double life: At school she is popular and revered as a beauty. Both characters are regarded as the most intelligent girls in their class. But at home they are both domestic goddesses, cooking and cleaning and taking care of others (a little brother in Hori's case, a helpless classmate in Mahiru's story). Both female leads have hidden relationships, boyfriends that for some time are kept secret from friends and classmates. And both male leads disguise themselves at school with long hair covering their faces and clothes that are not stylish or fashionable, so that they can hide and avoid potential bullies. Later in the story, both boyfriends clean up and style their hair and wear more fashionable clothes.

The themes and past history of the characters is also very similar. Hori feels abandoned by an absentee father and a mother who works long hours leaving Hori and her brother at home alone. Mahiru has been literally abandoned by her parents with almost no parental contact at all. Miyamura is traumatized by his history of being bullied. We see frequent scenes of him dealing with his ptsd, learning to trust his friends and classmates. It is his relationship with Hori that allows him to come out of his shell and build trust with his new friends. Likewise, Fujimiya was severely bullied and this was the reason for him living alone in a new city for high school. He and Mahiru become friends and then lovers, and it is this relationship that gives them strength and confidence to develop new friendships and learn to trust again.

Bullying and ptsd, the development of trusting friendships, hiding behind false appearances, these are all very common tropes in romance and slice of life anime. I was just struck by the similarities between these two stories. "Say, I Love You" is another anime with similar themes. I'm sure we can think of more that fall into these tropes. If you love romance and slice of life stories, there is always room for an original working of these familiar tropes. I'm not suggesting that there is anything wrong with treading the well worn path.

Wow. I just checked out your link. Are laws about plagiarism and copyright that loose in Japan? I don't think so. After all, my favorite, Hikaru no Go, was ended mid-story because of a lawsuit alleging that a character was too close to the real life person it was based on... I suppose that unless a lawsuit is filed, publishers can push the limits in Japanese copyright law.

Just last month author of Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko ended career because accidentally copied few sentences from someone's 6 year old novel, whole issue was shredded, so probably they are quite strict. On other side angel novel created whole subgenre of romcoms with classmates cohabiting, some of them being so blatant copy that you wouldn't belive, i.e. 'How To Melt the Ice Lady'.

And what is pople's obsession with comparing everything to horymia? This two have nothing in common beside being romcoms.

The common tropes of the high school girl who excels at school and at housework, the relationship that must be kept secret because of her popularity, the introverted and friendless boyfriend who suffered bullying, the female lead who has abandonment issues because of her parents, the school beauty x otaku romance; I realize these tropes are not original to Horimiya. I just thought of Horimiya because of those similarities.

Your news about the author's mistake reminds me of my favorite manga/anime from 20 years ago: Hikaru no Go. A character in the manga was too closely modeled on a real-life professional Go player who filed a law suit. The anime had to be concluded rather quickly, maybe an entire season earlier than intended, leaving a lot of manga unadapted.

Sorry for late reply, dopamine detox, this is like 90% of romcoms : ) where goddes falls for a loner from just one act of kindness, I didn't like horimiya but I must admit main pair had guts and their relationship was much more believable. Whereas most romcoms is mostly milking.

The other comments have answered your first question.

Based on estimation, the anime will adapt until Volume 4 by skipping Volume 3.

My advice is to read/watch until the end of Volume 1 content, most likely episode 4. Then decide if this LN/anime is for you.

I think you are just over-exaggerating, hence people here disagreeing with you.
Personally I think we have the same thoughts. But I look at it the positive way. Instead of over-exaggerating, I look at it that they have similar core concepts that made us love the series.
Best word I could put it is "balanced" Instead of trying something weird as hell and people getting confused or using a ton of generic tropes and cliches and a ton of fanservice that maskes the bad writing, shows like the two have a thing in common that I think. And that was the "balanced" that I was talking about.
It's hard to put it in words and I'm kinda lazy to do it but just wanted share my thoughts on this.

Pizza and noodles are both food, so clearly one must be a rip off of the other.

This is about as deep as this comparison between the two series goes.
