▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Interview #256 - @KrisPNatz ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

17 Again-st My Will

The Emptier Your Head Is, The More Room There Is To Pack With Dreams

Interview conducted & Reviewed by: @spaceslut

Could you tell us more about yourself?

Wow starting off with the hardest question ever - WELL HELLOOOOO my name is KrisPNatz

I’m a content creator on YouTube who makes videos centering around anime and related media like manga, manhwa, manhua, donghua, donghwa, donga, the last two are not real (at least for now). I primarily talk about BL (Boys Love), play playthroughs of visual novels depicting relationships between fictional MENNN, get horny over male characters and Trojan horse propaganda for various underrated favorite series of mine under more popular topics and clickbait thumbnails *smiles and points finger guns at sasamiya stans*. Other than that I’m a SWAGittarius, Bi Bi Bi, and the last person on the planet who hasn’t watched Jujutsu Kaisen - I’ve only read it.

How did you choose your username?

Welllll my first name is Kris and back in high school my nickname was Natz (we don’t need to get into it)

which later evolved into PNatz for reasons and so I went by KrisPNatz for many years as a nickname which was basically my go-to handle for all my social media, my YouTube channel, and of course later my MyAnimeList profile.

Could you give us your brief history of your time on MAL?

I don’t remember when I first came to learn about MyAnimeList exactly but for years before I made a profile I would casually use it to find info on anime that I had heard about or to find out about sequels for series I already knew. It wasn’t until years later when I decided to commit to being a content creator who focused on anime that I decided to actually make a profile and catalog all the anime and manga I’d watched and read over the years (before this it was on a note on my phone). I also highkey had a facebook addiction at the time and used MAL and its similar color scheme as a placebo to deal with that LMF

How did you get into anime/manga?

Like a lot of people, I was introduced to anime and manga during the western boom of the 90s and 00s. Growing up I always loved animated media over live-action (still do) so at first anime series like DBZ and Pokemon and Digimon and Shaman King and CardcaptorSSSSS and etc were all just extensions of animation as a whole that at the time I didn’t recognize as being foreign-made (this similarly applied to Code Lyoko and Totally Spies) let alone a subgroup of media in its own right. As time went on I eventually learned the distinction of these shows being Japanese-made animated media called anime and seeing as most of the “cartoons” I had a strong interest in ended up being anime I naturally gravitated to eventually consuming anime with the intent of specifically looking FOR anime. Manga very much followed the same pathway in my life, I also grew up reading comic books which I knew were the source media loosely adapted into some of the animated series I loved (Batman, static shock, spider-man, x-men) and because the manga section in bookstores (RIP BORDERS THAT WAS MY HOOOOME TT.TT) was often either combined or the next section over I also just assumed they were comic books that for some reason didn’t have color - again until I learned they were technically their own separate media based out of Japan. Fast forward [REDACTED] years later and anime and manga have consistently been part of my life ever since.

Could you recommend to us three of your favorite anime/manga?

I’m writing this after I've written all the recommendations but I’m so sorry these are so long LMFAO this turned into a marketing campaign and I’m not even getting residuals.

Idolish7 (Anime): Listen - I can’t lie - Im a regular male idol anime connoisseur: B-Pro was a Go, Starmyu is my Boo, I’ve read MANY a porn doujin involving Seiji Shingen from The Idolm@ster SideM - but for none of the above have I felt COMPELLED to shriek at strangers on the internet like a Jehovah’s Witness with a new member quota deadline. As a wise man once said: Idolish7 is love, Idolish7 is live, Idolish7 is NOT Love Live - it’s even BETTER (that wise man was me).

https://staging.animethemes.moe/wiki/anime/idolish7_third_beat/OP2

Jokes aside, most idol anime are character-driven in the same way Weekly Shonen Jump action series are self insert super power-driven - the whole point is you have a favorite character or characters that you latch onto, you spend time with them by watching them, they make you feel good and an overall great time is had. Idolish7 very much contains this same formula (if it ain’t broke don’t fix it) in a lovable cast of characters who come off as the standard character archetypes you expect in any ensemble (no stars) but have their own struggles and character explorations that flesh them out in meaningful ways which in turn humanizes these characters so that anyone can relate to them. Their struggles are not JUST the superficial struggles of the entertainment business, they’re the struggles of everyday people now thrust into the limelight, the struggles of people who have family issues that haunt them even as they pursue their dream jobs, the struggles of people with unresolved trauma who are doing all they can to not snap. They're not shallow hot boys, they’re shallow hot boys with DEPTH - ALEXA PLAY I CAN GO DEEP BY SILK-sorry officer I just lost it for a second, I’ll put my dick away now.

https://staging.animethemes.moe/wiki/anime/idolish7_third_beat/ED

Something to know about me is I very much despise the behavior of propping up series for everything they are not. “This BL anime is great cause it’s NOT these other BL anime” “I love this Isekai cause it DOESNT do what other isekai do” let us all know when you actually want to talk about the thing cause you're just talking about everything else right now - it says a lot when you can only prop something up by putting other things down. You will NEVER see me say watch Idolish7. It’s “nOt LiKe OtHeR iDoL aNiMe” cause it very much IS like other idol anime - there would be no Idolish7 without the UtaPris that came before it. Idolish7 within the scope of idol anime is not the exception - it’s an extension and whether you’re someone who’s into 2D idols or not it can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone who enjoys entertaining character dynamics, chaotic and attentive humor, BALL GRIPPING drama and a soundtrack of songs that are chart-topping hits (in Japan, quite literally). Y’all have either 3 or 6 months to catch up before Idolish7 Third Beat Part Two drops (idk which, it's just scheduled for this year). It’s a total of 45 full episodes - don’t forget to watch Vibrato between seasons 1 and 2, which you can watch for free on YouTube (at least in the US).

Major 2nd (Anime): Full transparency I have never seen the original Major series but know that I eventually plan to (blame the fact it's not licensed anywhere and I DONT KNOW WHY). Before Major 2nd I never would have thought I would EVER like baseball anime cause IRL I REALLY don’t care for the sport but the series was the beginning of my baseball anime bias that eventually came to include Diamond no Ace, Mix Meisei Story and most recently Big Windup.

https://staging.animethemes.moe/wiki/anime/major_2nd/OP2

I picked it up cause sweet widdle Daigo Shigeno was front and center on the poster - then I got a glimpse of his hot dad Goro and I KNEW I had to give it my attention. I went in thinking it would be a casual cute kids baseball watch filled with a must-be-protected-able cast and a hot father cameoing time to time BUT IT WAS SO MUCH MORE!!! (On Ice). The stwuggles of Daigo being the far less than talented son of a successful pro athlete and his adorable jaded personality CAPTURED MY HEART and I BAWLED throughout my first and second watches. When the second season came out I was like “it’ll be more of the same, I’m here for the ride” BUT IT EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS!!! (On Ice).

https://staging.animethemes.moe/wiki/anime/major_2nd_2nd_season/OP1

Not only did an already solidly animated series undergo an aesthetic evolution and have the most OVERLOOKED animation quality in 2020 BUT WE GOT TO SEE DAIGO EVOLVE into a captain for his team THAT HAD MAJORITY GIRL MEMBERSSS. It was a GLORIOUS story of overcoming the odds by challenging the patriarchy - in a shonen baseball anime?! NANI?! WHO KNEEWWWWWWW. I cannot recommend Major 2nd enough, like I said I didn’t have the context of the iconic original Major series but it still was an INCREDIBLE watch for me and I know once I get around to watching Major all the cameos and references I didn’t get the first time around will leave me in a puddle on the floor in the best way.

Boruto Naruto Next Generations (Anime): In my conceited opinion (cause why be humble when you’re being interviewed by the ILLUSTRIOUS MAL INTERVIEWS) - most people consuming Boruto aren't paying attention and it hurts my soul but I can’t say I’m surprised. I grew up with Naruto, remember EXACTLY where I was when I watched the very first episode when it premiered on Toonami, read the manga weekly as it was published to completion and I find this series to be a perfect sequel for anyone who truly cared about its characters and world…. WELL WITH ONE MAJOR CRITICISM I HALF FORGIVE BUT WE’LL GET TO THAT LATER LMAO. Everyone is mad at what Boruto isn’t instead of seeing Boruto for what it is supposed to be - and I don’t just mean a story centered around Boruto GenZoomermaki. BNNG is often framed as “Naruto part 3” but I find that generalization to be a huge misunderstanding that Boruto outside of its chronological franchise connection is not about the cast of Naruto in a literal sense - it’s about what Naruto Uzumaki and his supporting cast were able to achieve. BNNG is the EFFECT to the original Naruto’s CAUSE. The effect of several powerful villages putting their long bloody histories aside to achieve a period of peace for everyone. The effect of the pain, suffering, and sacrifice that the cast of Naruto experienced - is an effect that shows them their loved ones didn’t lose their lives for nothing. It’s about how these child soldiers were able to make a world where their life-threatening occupation was no longer a job NECESSITY for future generations and instead a career OPTION. It’s about how they created a day to day life where their children have the privilege to be spoiled and ignorant of the hostile environment that pervades the history of their village because they never had to tangibly experience the economic instability, government corruption, genocide, interfamilial warfare, social ostracism, and oppression that their parents dealt with. It’s about… all the female characters becoming housewives? OKAY THAT PART I PARTIALLY AGREE IS UNFORTUNATE - BUT TO BE FAIR DID YALL REALLY FORGET THE M IN KISHIMOTO STANDS FOR MISOGYNY? At least Boruto has achieved the impossible - ITS MADE SASUKE LIKABLE - AND A PART-TIME HOUSEHUSBAND - MOVE OVER TATSU.

So yea, Boruto centering around an annoying spoiled brat isn’t the most desirable outcome for people who watched a series strictly thru fight scene compilations and theory videos on YouTube - but if you paid attention to the story and the world it contains as well as cared about its characters’ well being - I think you would enjoy BNNG for what it is instead of what it isn’t. It was intended to be consumed by a new generation who had never seen Naruto (hence “Boruto’s Dad”) so it’s easily accessible for EVERYONE - no prior 700 episode series required and listen - I LOVE this shit. Boruto Uzumaki aside, the new generation of Konoha Genin are an absolute joy besides Namida. Chocho is my favorite of the Konoha kids and second, in the story, she’s just so wholesome and lovable and witty and emotionally intelligent SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE MAIN CHARACTER IMO. Mitsuki is a bean, Orochimaru is such a doting parent in this - the POWER. Gaara’s son Shinki is actually under joint custody with me because I will protect that child with my entire being he’s so awkward and precious and the only character I love more than Chocho - BUT ONLY BY A LITTLE. Iwabe is love, Iwabe is live, okay I won’t make that joke again but Iwabe is the Naruto purist albeit in an endearing way. Sarada is also great plus the people love Yuuma Uchida’s angst whore voice right? KAWAKI IS KYO PART TWOOOOO. This pitch worked on absolutely no one, I just typed passionately into the void, I hope at least you were entertained.

Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas (Manga): I honestly would have recommended this for anime cause the 2 season anime adaptation is one of the most aesthetically pleasing anime adaptations I’ve ever seen but 1. I have too much propaganda to promote and 2. The anime will never be followed up so might as well recommend the manga which is equally as gorgeous with the same engaging story. The Lost Canvas is technically a prequel to the original Saint Seiya series (it requires honestly no prior Saint Seiya knowledge) taking place 250 years before and follows another Pegasus Saint named Tenma and his CHILDHOOD FRIENDSSSSS Alone and Sasha as the three of them are thrust into a holy war between Hades’ specters and Athena’s saints as it’s revealed that Alone and Sasha are the reincarnations of Hades and Athena respectively with Tenma stuck in the middle of a conflict none of them signed up for.

(i know this is for manga but I couldn't pick a SINGLE page lmao)

Now full transparency - and you might be sensing a theme - I have never completed watching nor read the original Saint Seiya story LMAO. I have nothing against the original, I did watch its bowling for soup sung “Knights of the Zodiac” dub on television growing up but I have just never had a chance to complete the original story. In a similar situation to the original Major - blame the fact it was basically only on Netflix for 2 years and I just did NOT have the TIMEEEEE. If I’m being honest, The Lost Canvas appealed to me in many ways the original Saint Seiya did not. From its detailed story rooted in its world’s mythology instead of opening with a city-based tournament arc to its greater muscular definition on the male characters that was infinitely more stimulating than the stylized bishounen art style Kurumada is known for (still love Kurumada’s art tho, it just doesn’t get the blood PUMPING in the right places ya know?). The Lost Canvas allowed me to re-experience the Saint Seiya universe thru a different aesthetic and narrative approach and by the end, I had a greater understanding and appreciation for the original story. It’s tragic, it’s eerie, it’s hopeful, it has great plot twists, it has stakes, it has all the battles and powers that come with Saint Seiya, it has an ATTRACTIVE lovable lead with the BEST zodiac sign and a story INFUSED with Kokoro no cosmo.

Arata Kangatari (Manga): from the same mangaka as Fushigi Yuugi and Sakura-gari, Arata Kangatari is the best of both those worlds in its adventurous isekai setting full of indescribable pain and a passionate love story between a bully and the bullied (at least in my head anyway). Arata Kangatari follows its dual protagonists both named Arata who swap worlds and together but separately (and occasionally thru a magical world crossing FaceTime) must uncover a government conspiracy in the fantasy world Arata's fantasy world that involves the assassination of the reigning princess by her own supposed protectors.

The journey thru a whole new world is great fun, the character exploration is handled with great care, and in spite of the violence and darker themes present, this shit is so damn funny. As I mentioned Fushigi Yuugi and Sakura-gari I think for context I should also mention that I was personally not a fan of Fushigi Yuugi and Sakura-gari I DID enjoy but Arata Kangatari is by and large my absolute favorite of Yuu Watase’s works that I've read or watched. The only other thing I’ll say is that there would be no BakuDeku without HinoKado JUST SAYIN.

Radiant (Manfra): TECHNICALLY this isn’t “manga” seeing as its origin is in France and is labeled as a Manfra (French Manga) but it does have a Japanese anime adaptation in the database and checks all the boxes outside of being based in japan plus I’ve seen other interviews where Manhwa has been recommended so I’m hoping it’s allowed XD. Now I love the Radiant anime - it was how I was introduced to the story - but I wholeheartedly encourage people to just read the manfra instead.

Radiant is a story about prejudice, it’s a story about people who are ostracized for being changed by something outside of their control and yet still fight to protect everyone - even those that harm them. It’s a story of magic, adventure, SYSTEMIC OPPRESSION, questioning the status quo, found family, overcoming adversity, empathy and the search for ONE PIECE-I MEAN - THE RADIANT… which is basically magical one piece I think, I don’t know, honestly I can’t even remember the last VOLUME the Radiant was mentioned in AND ISNT THAT JUST LIKE ONE PIECE.

Radiant’s cast is one of the most wholesome I’ve encountered, Radiant’s setting is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen, Radiant’s metaphors and messages are some of the most relatable and true that I have ever read, Radiant’s women are some of the coolest, hottest and strongest I know, Radiant’s men are all fools and I love them for that - I’m not sure if there are any nonbinary people in Radiant but with the diversity of various forms of identity present in all aspects of this series I would not be surprised if there would be an NB character down the line or if they already exist and I’m just not paying attention - and most of all Radiant’s character designs are Supreme because they include MALE PRESENTING NIPPLES. Over the years I have come across MANY an anime or manga-inspired doujin, comic, webtoon, or fan work that has TRIED to emulate the energy of some of the most popular “battle shonen” manga but failed to authentically replicate anything other than the fact they only paid attention to the 500 jutsus and power up transformations. Tony Valente’s Radiant is the first time I’ve felt like a creator paid attention to the inspiration cumulatively and replicated that same formula from a place of genuine love for and understanding of the works that inspired him. Did I mention the male presenting nipples?

Any users you like/dislike and why?

Honestly, I don’t participate or interact directly with anyone on here so I genuinely don’t have anyone specific in mind for either but to be VAGUE I guess I like anyone who was BRAVE enough to unironically review Boruto with a 7 or higher and I dislike anyone arguing in discussions about why media with same-gender male couples like Yuri On Ice and Banana Fish arent tagged as “boys love” cause I’m TIRED of this everywhere on the internet. It's 2022 - LEARN WHAT WORDS MEAN

Any hobbies outside of anime/manga and MAL?

I have a bunch. When it’s nice out I like to go bike riding with friends on long trails and risk my life in these literal streets. Dancing was the primary time consumer in my life for over a decade before I started doing YouTube full time. After YEARS of not caring about figures, I started figure collecting in 2021. Most scales don’t appeal to me, some do, but I mostly collect nendoroids, and then if we’re talking Merch beyond scales I love me a nice acrylic stand. I write fanfiction but not publicly, I don’t have like a ghost account or publish under a pseudonym or anything I just write for myself and keep it to myself it’s not out anywhere on the internet. I’ve always been a creative person and writing in my personal life helps me be more creative in my professional life it’s like a cycle in the creative part of my brain that keeps me sane.

How do you feel about how the site is run? Especially in regards to the moderators and admins

Okay, customer feedback survey UHHHHHHHHH like I said before im not really in these forums and discussions like that so I don't have any opinions when it comes to mods and admins specifically, my primary use of MAL involves the database.

What led you to make YouTube videos and continue to where you are today?
From @NextUniverse

As a lifelong creative spirit and someone who grew up watching YouTubers, doing youtube as a job was something id always wanted to do since I used to make videos with friends for fun and for clubs in school. I started making youtube videos super casually and infrequently doing rants about random topics but ultimately decided to pursue youtube seriously with a focus in anime starting in 2018 since I had been out of a job for a while and out of all my job prospects at the time youtube despite being a long shot was the most desirable option and I've been doing youtube ever since. In the beginning, I was doing mostly reviews cause that was all I knew to do but as time has passed and audience interests, as well as my own, have shifted, I've expanded to make scripted content that isn't restrained by a standard review structure. I just kinda go with the chaotic flow of my brain on a subject, throw an enticing and sometimes clickbait thumbnail on it, and call it a day.

What do you think about the criticism AniTubers receive? Stuff like "they are cringe" or "they have bad opinions".
From @NextUniverse

As someone who not only is considered an “anituber” by some but also has consumed a lot of content from other anitubers both before and after I started my channel - I think that for a long time people put too much importance on the opinions of anitubers (and people on the internet in general when it comes to entertainment media). Years ago anitubers could do no wrong in the eyes of anime fans and people listened to them like they were oracles of the masses since they echoed the popular opinions the vast majority of anime fans had, but as time has passed some of them have time and again “betrayed” their audiences with unintentionally unpopular opinions on series that were or became hugely popular - which for fans who put them on a pedestal felt like a complete betrayal of trust. Now there are a fair share of anitubers who frame their opinions like they're common sense, present themselves in a VERY assholish and unlikable way, and act like if you disagree you're “weird and wrong” but at the same time, this is literally everyone on the internet lmao. People just treat the opinions of people with a following with more weight cause our society presents popularity as some sort of social capital that makes someone “better than everyone else”. So whether you've followed an anituber you agreed with who then said your favorite anime sucks or you just don't agree with any anitubers in general cause they hate on your favs - most people have this strong sense of irritation at public figures saying something about a thing they like moreso than the average rando with no followers on Twitter. Personally - and as yall can probably see from my recommendations above - I’m someone who’s always had an interest in anime that is not widely popular or liked so I've never developed a parasocial relationship with any anituber in the ways a lot of people have. I just like things when I like them, I've never needed someone to tell me something is “good” because I've always known quality is subjective, not everyone is going to like the same things as me and that’s fine. But for a lot of people, they NEED this lie of something being “the objectively best without question” for things they like as this weird social barrier cause they can't handle a difference of opinion and so the idea of someone with a following shitting on their fav feels like a personal attack even tho a public figure not liking something doesn't mean anything important. I will say again that the way some anitubers go about presenting their opinions and how they conduct themselves definitely doesn't do them any favors (see: the SAO hate train) and that's something I've kept in mind as I've made my content over the years so I GET IT. I personally have things I don't like but I never go out of my way to shit on them cause I know what it's like to be on the other side (all my faves get 6’s and sometimes 5’s T.T). Also, I personally have never felt the need to HATE an anime, I just drop it and move on. So yea I understand some criticisms cause I've had them myself as someone who despite BEING an anituber has also WATCHED anitubers but you shouldn't be taking our opinions as absolute truth or as some sort of uncontestable declaration whether we frame them as objective or subjective. If you're worried about public perception around your fav being manipulated in a malicious way you should be more concerned about the review bombing on anime database sites that affect ratings - that affects public perception on a greater scale even tho it is also in the grand scheme of things doesn't matter.

Who is your favorite AniTuber?
From @NextUniverse

I currently do not watch any anitubers and haven't for a few years now but I also just don't watch many content creators as it is at this point. The majority of my youtube consumption is music, official news sources, and entertainment companies (anime/comics/merchandise) and the few individual creators that I do follow (that are still around) are not in the anitube space.

What do you think about the many copyright claims from anime companies on AniTubers?
From @NextUniverse

Gee, I wonder which recent event this could be in reference to? Lmaolmaolmao I'm gunna say from what little I've seen in reaction to this topic I probably have a fairly unpopular opinion on this even as someone who has been directly affected by this kind of thing. End of the day, if we’re looking at this from the standpoint of copyright law - a copyright owner has every legal right to take down something that contains their Intellectual Property, its why their IP is copyrighted in the first place. Fair Use, “transformative content” etc are not legally binding things that act as magical shields to prevent corporations from taking down your videos, art, etc and people need to look into the law before they go fearmongering to their subscribers with teary eyed thumbnails that their life is over in order to cause a social media uproar just cause they dont understand how this shit works. It doesnt matter if youre uploading whole chapters of naruto, making fanart of tanjiro or making a video analyzing Oda’s revelation of the bust size of Zoro (shoutout to a patron who recently shared a tweet about this LMFAO) - if your video contains a piece of media or a character that you do not own the copyright of - you are technically in violation of copyright law and if a company has the financial means to go thru the grueling legal process then your shit will get taken down and you will have to pay up.

Also, the majority of the arguments people will use such as “fair use” only apply to the United States and don't apply to Japanese copyright law so to see people bringing them up shows a lack of understanding of the situation cumulatively. The reason a vast majority of videos go “unpunished” or why fanart and doujinshi, etc are not taken down or their creators fined is because they are not seen as a financial detriment to the corporation in question. Your lewd Nezuko pin-up that you sell on gumroad for $5 isn't protected cause you have a different art style, its because you're not making bank on that single pinup comparable to manga volume or blu ray sales and in turn for the company that pin-up is supplementary material that acts as free promotion for them to eventually also make more sales on official products related to their source - but also know if they did have any issue with it they could very well have your distribution of it shut down (most wont waste the time and finances tho). However, if you are making a video series that in essence is the spark notes analysis alternative to watching or reading Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, people readily in your comments talk about how they watch your videos instead of the source and you have hundreds of thousands of subscribers with videos getting millions of views - all of which are MONETIZED between your Patreon, Adsense and brand deals - then a company is going to be more inclined to want to take down your content since even if there's no financial evidence that you're siphoning money away from their company the perception is you're making money off of an alternative to their product that you do not own the rights to. It doesnt matter if Toei US partnered with the said creator at some point in the past, that doesnt make it a “betrayal” - Toei US is not the Japanese based umbrella company that owns the rights and as with all massive global corporations not everyone is on the same page for something as insignificant to their business as which anituber their USA distribution branch partnered with in the past for some cheap marketing. Also, partnering with a company for a brand deal or sponsorship ONCE or even a FEW times does not give you eternal rights to said source material for every video outside the sponsored ones before and after. I will say the geoblocking discussion and revelation of MCNs being the only groups that have access to that feature on youtube is a net positive to come out of this debacle since it shows a lack of access for creators and as someone that copyright strikes have affected and could again any time in the future, I think if I had the option to block a copyright holder’s home country from my videos to bring myself more security I would LOVE to have that feature. However, for years certain anitubers have fearmongered their audiences into thinking they've been wronged by anime and manga copyright holders when they've included whole video clips of anime they don't own the rights to and also likely pirated to even acquire for their videos in the first place (you're telling me, EVERYONE, either sat there and screen recorded whole episodes or ripped every single blu ray from every single seasonal anime before their blu rays were even available? O3O). To act like youve somehow been wronged in this situation and are a victim is insincere on several levels in my book and if this has grown to become your full-time job and you have employees to support it's irresponsible to not have a safety net and not be educated on the risks. Is it “unfair” that our content could be taken down and our channels terminated on a whim? I say no cause we’re all technically in violation of copyright law. Does it SUCK? Of course it does, but this is how this shit works, it comes with the territory, this job and/or hobby is one that comes with the perpetual risk of takedowns and the vast majority of anitubers (outside reaction channels) don't even really deal with this as a regular issue. I think people need to notice the trend of what kinds of creators often find themselves in this kind of trouble and realize that while we’re ALL anitubers who utilize content we don't own the rights to - some of us have content that is not as transformative as we may like to think (not that it being transformative would help in a court of law anyway).

What are your favorite games to react to on your channel?

I haven't done much overall at this point but I'd probably say Visual Novels since they require the least amount of effort LMAO. I used to play games when I was younger but im very much no longer about that life outside of the occasional Mario Party with friends so clicking thru with multiple-choice very much appeals to me. Also when I'm making videos of VNs that don't have audio tracks it lets me fuck around with different voices which is fun. My favorite specific game that I've played in a video is the kemono visual novel Knights College, its become my favorite VN of all time. Even tho the video where I played it didn't do too well i still had mad fun and i love that thumbnail. Other than that Im actually in the process of playing my first gacha game for a video but only cause unlike others ive reacted to it doesnt have a wikia page full of the cards and such lmao so we’ll SEE how that goes...

Would you consider doing or are you on other platforms of social media for your content(ie Twitch, TikTok, etc)?

I definitely WOULD consider making content on another platform and i technically do on one other platform (PornHub) but i dont see anything replacing me using YouTube for the foreseeable future cause the alternatives are all significantly less desirable for me and the kind of content i desire to make. I absolutely despise so many things about tiktok - i just would never. As for twitch, streaming is just not my lane, I've streamed a few times on my youtube channel in the past but my internet connection is just not built for that plus im not here to be a personality/influencer on camera. I very much create content to create content so i have no desire to just hang out on live for a living, id rather be putting a video together or working on a creative endeavor and monetizing that.

What are some of your thoughts on LGBT representation in anime/manga especially in recent years?

I think it's great that there’s more distinctly visible LGBT representation across anime and manga in recent years.

Do you see yourself leaving MAL in the near future?

Absolutely not I HAVE TOO MANY ENTRIES ID HAVE TO REORGANIZE. I've looked into the other anime database sites over the years and they just have never appealed to me between their interfaces, overall organization, and presentation so MAL is very much “where I want to be”.

Is there anything you wish MAL had?

Generally, I love how MAL is set up and what it offers, it's a very old-school forum and doesnt have an algorithm shoving shit you never asked for in your face so NEVER CHANGE lmao but I have a few superficial “wishes” I guess.

Since MAL has in recent years included more media outside anime and manga (manhua, donghua, manhwa) I wish there were dedicated discovery capabilities for these media cause as of right now finding them can be kind of a pain. The search all function defaults to anime/manga/characters/people before everything else (unless its a super popular title) so I wish - even if it was its own separate search page - there was a more straightforward way to look for these non-anime/manga media without finding an entry and clicking the media type to take us to the ranking page and then hoping its somewhere on the first few hundred. I know there are certain qualifications for certain media to even be included in the database and I don't have issues with that, yall have your rules, run the site how you feel best, but if these things are gunna be included at all I just wish the ability to find them was more direct. Also, I do find it weird that manhua is separate from manga and manhwa but donghua isn't similarly separated from anime. Top ONA is mostly donghua but not solely donghua so I do wish donghua could be categorized separately.

This is more of a vague “thing” but I think it would be cool to have a “cumulative rank” of sorts that ranks everything regardless of medium based on ALL the entries related to a series being consolidated to show a more broad rank of how everything on the site ranks against each other. Basically, it would be a “Top Series” section where each series as a whole is ranked based on the mean score of all its media forms whatever those forms in the database may be. So instead of how in “top anime” you have several entries of attack on titan - all the attack on titan seasons, ova, movies, related short series, and manga would have a cumulative score that would then go on this list. Not every series exists in more than one media form or more than one entry of any kind but it could be fascinating to see how this would rank everything on the site - to see how some anime compare to some manga and to give a broader “audience grade” each series has cumulatively. There would be series whose score would skew based on anime reaction contrasting with manga reception for any reason (lmao the promised neverland) but a series and its fandom is made up cumulatively of its different parts and experiences with the different media so this could bring a more “honest” score to everything IMO and would just be super interesting to see. Im, not someone who really takes ranks seriously I know how the scores of anime fluctuate across each of the anime database sites due to differing userbases but I think this kind of “battle royale” of all the entries being ranked regardless could be a fun metric to see especially when consolidating series that have so many damn single season/movie entries.

Is there something unasked that you would like to talk about?

Nope, it's whatever yall wanna ask I don't need this to be my personal soapbox lmao

Any feedback on the interview format?

It was super easy, super simple, straightforward and I didn't have any issues, thanks for asking me to be interviewed~

That's the end of the interview. Thank you for your attention.
