Well, since both get so compared for being "a deconstruction of it's genre" with dark topics here and there, I wanted to know your thoughts on which show you consider better.

At my viewpoint, I liked Madoka Magica more since it had a significantly bigger emotional impact on me and the pacing was consistently good. But on the other side, I find Eva's characters to have better writing and more depth added to them, also, the story and the worldbuilding were quite superior.

I'm excluding the movies from this poll, despite I think both are great, End of Evangelion is faaar better imo.

Both are in my top 5 of all time, but I think Evangelion barely wins for me. Madoka Magica doesn’t have the same psychological peaks as Eva and the characters aren’t quite as good. I think the movies are at a similar level though.

Both franchises have crappy movies added for no reason to already closed stories, but if we compare the tv series, Madoka tries its hardest to defy all logic and treat the viewer like an idiot, while Evangelion is a pretty compelling character drama, so the choice is obvious

Both are fairly poor deconstructions of their respective genres (albeit excellent shows regardless) in that neither are particularly critical or analytical of said genres, instead using them simply to subvert expectations or as Trojan horses for other, unrelated ideas. Evangelion does well in incorporating the mechs into its overtones of Freudian psychology and Abrahamic religion, whereas Madoka Magica seems to just reach for the grittiest explanation possible for each of its magical girl trademarks/tropes. As far as overall quality goes, Evangelion has much higher peaks and is undoubtedly the more intelligent of the two, exploring philosophical pessimism and the navigation of life with crippling mental hang-ups; Madoka Magica makes decidedly better use of the animation medium and is more consistent narratively, but does little else other than subvert expectations a few times, ultimately.

I'd pick Eva. Stuck with me a bit more, I guess. However, I really like Madoka too. If we're just talking the shows I liked Madoka's ending more than Eva's. (Haven't seen the Madoka movies yet.)

It's almost unfair considering the number of episodes and movies NGE has, while PMMM has only 12 and a movie. But with way less content, PMMM do a excellent job, so I would say the latter

Evangelion is better + deconstructions don't really exist in anime and if they did, NGE would be probably closer to that definition. For most people, deconstruction simply means "a certain genre except DARKER", which is not what the term means. To quote Wikipedia:



Also, since NGE is first and foremost a commentary on otaku culture, I'd say it explores anime itself and not just a one genre (mecha).

both of these series are some of my all time favorites. for writing, i do think evangelion takes the cake. though personally i enjoyed madoka more, probably because it was way easier to get through😭

For me Eva is clearly above, thought madoka magica is good Eva is peak, anyways both have the similarity that the movies are shit in comparison to their series and are imposible to understand
