Spoil it without actually spoiling it, if that makes sense. To me there are 3 main characters in Class 1-D. I believe Horikita gets some decent development in the first season, however it felt like everyone else was stagnant

In particular, do Ayanokouji and Kushida get development? Or do they just stay the fake psychos they are the entire time

Horikita gets a lot of character development moving forward(in Season 2), Kushida is a bit of an oddball bc we get reasons for her personality but it's not what I would character development bc she stays kinda the same throughout the series although it might change with Year 2. And overall imo Ayanokouji gets better as the story progresses. But who knows maybe the adaption will fuck it up bc watching the first season I'm not very hopeful.

Nearly all the important characters (koenji) of class 1 D get very good development
Character focus by volume

I’m pretty sure the anime did a poor job in terms of displaying the characters beyond their surface level quirks. Though I haven’t read very far into the novel.

in this second season you will see massive development of Kei.....horikita is going to be side character this time...

As a Light Novel reader I can tell you that almost all the character's have been developed as the story progressed ( except Koenji xd ) .I don't think you ' ll be able to notice much development in kushieda in anime adaptation as she have been developed least in year 1 .

I stopped reading after 8th Light Novel Volume... So my opinion isn't 100% on point with the additional volumes.

But to answer your question... Almost all characters undergo some degree of development with time. The two main characters you named undergo development too, but it's all minor stuff... they kinda stay psycho entire time.
why tf you stop reading it...L

Idk how they going to manage that without either a.) rushing it or b.) leaving some people out

show feels like the type that needs dozens of episodes, and instead they are doing 12 episode seasosns

They all get character development and it's done at a realistic pace, neither too fast nor too slow and it's really satisfying to watch them grow

Horikita got a damn lot of character development, but after that, she will kind of becomes side character and only appear on exam,'cause the real main heroine would be revealed in S2. Kushida,to me,just a side character, and will have a lot of conflict to bring down horikita. She's kind of the same for the first year. Our mc just too genius that I doubt he really need any character development, other than he kind of starting to learn about "human relationship". So yeah, they do get a character development. I mean,it kind of obvious they will.

They Pretty much all go through some Character Development. Horikita und Sudo probably being some of the biggest ones. As for our Genius Kiyopon it’s hard to say. You could say he goes through character development. Horikita will become more of a side Character in the future. More people will be introduced that have a huge impact on the series. I’ve read all the LNs so far including Year 2 Vol 6, and I can say for sure that the people that haven’t read the LN better get ready for an amazing ride. Hopefully they don’t ruin the Adaptation like they did in Season 1.

My favorite character development in the 1st year arc is probably sudou and ryuuen, if you read the light novel you will know, sudou went from the guy that dont wanna help to the guy that is responsible and cares about his class, and ryuuen went from the guy that always do bad things and didnt care about his class to the guy that cares about his classmate and the future

I will preface it by saying that it's my personal opinion so please don't bully me for it.

Anyway I stopped because I lost my desire to read it any further. It seemed like the author was trying too hard to make everyone a bit too badass. Also I wanted to see more development between Kei and Kiyotaka and I wasn't satisfied with whatever meagre bits I got from the parts I read. I lost the "why" for reading any further volumes. It began to feel artificial and it didn't suit my taste anymore... It's hard to explain it in words but that's just how I feel about it.

You could've read 3 volumes more cuz they start dating...cote is not a romance Ln so they're gonna be very little amounts of that

if they continue making then it could be even more than that.
Because the light novel is only halfway through the story right now.

But that's only if they continue.
Look at Konosuba. Only 5 of 17 volumes got adapted.
