I've been using reddit for so many years now and I can safely say I really hate the anime community there. It's like most subreddits where it's a hive mind, but I still like following for art and very specific subs that are less toxic, hostile, and horny (though I don't mind horny, I don't wanna always see horny).

People of MAL forums, do you hang out here often? what's been your personal experiences? Do you love it or is it just where you hang out or do you hate it but can't help yourself? Do you all feel like everyone is pretty varied in opinions and do you feel like you have good conversations more often than not?

I really wanna be apart of the anime community, I love it and I miss being able to talk about it! Please share your experience and I'll read it all :V

Yeah, haha. I unsubbed a long while ago and resubbed I think at the beginning of the month. I stopped using reddit for a while there and went back to post art, inevitably wanting to join conversations and what not. I make poor decisions, I can admit that. P:

Do you like it here though?

Haha is it not tho? You know, I don't even necessarily mind if it's horny as long as you have to actually communicate with me instead of just mashing an up or down button to convey your feelings. I dont want likes, I want talky

reddit is the most disgusting midwitty site there is. i would rather follow some mentally unstable non binaries on tumblr who describe their self mutaliation.

i have predictions about one piece that i want to document before it happens in the manga. the subreddit is quite big. so i use it to post it there. most comments you get are utter garbage though.

Using reddit for any kind of meaningful discussion is already a mistake lol

I mean, you can definitely find some very enjoyable people to talk to, but unfortunately they're quite hard to pick out in very large communities (like r/anime for instance)

no, lots of things i don't like about it: overemotional flashbacks, silly designs, no one dies...
but i like trying to predict what will happen.
you can't do that with alot of shows. take hxh, which i like way more. first of all, togashi is not submitting the chapters regulary, like oda does. but even if he did, i am not even sure that togashi knows what is going to happen in the future of hxh. he probably improvises alot.
in one piece, oda clearly has a vision. he clearly introduces strong patterns that one can find. he sets up mysteries for people to think about. so it is a more fun social experience, to see what other people think will happen and to make your own forecasts and compare.

you're so right! I've found better discussions in small communities but I don't always or mostly find engaging discussions in those communities then a lot of times in the big communities, like you said, because of how people talk to each other on reddit, where they're trying to broadcast their opinion instead of talking to the person they're responding to. I don't know, I just wanna get away from hive minds. I don't wanna be in one extreme or the other, I just want that sweet variety that reddit can't offer

I stopped following One Piece a long time ago, and I was reading the manga. It was fun for a while, and I was told where I stopped it picks back up but I tried and it just stopped being fun for me. P: but that's all I'll say. HXH I haven't watched yet! I've heard only good things about it, I really need to start it up

I just checked dankmemes for the first time in 4 years and it's almost like their sense of humor has not evolved at all. I don't understand how anyone can laugh at anything there, it's like you just go there to be like "oh yeah, that makes sense" and proceed to pointlessly scroll for hours.

I never really went on r/anime but it seems like a worse version of MAL, Especially for getting anime/manga recs.

There's still a good chance you'll be insulted for your opinions here but at least the NPCs can't mass downvote you on top of that.

Opinions are varied but no I never have good conversations, participating in "discussions" (arguments) with anime fans is still a waste of time.

I don't like being insulted, but I don't mind if, as I've said before, people are talking to me instead of just downvoting.

It really does feel bad. Just all these faceless people judging you as a collective.

Horny or not, the anime community is great and some can be filled with toxic people but they are the reason people mostly view the anime community as assholes or just really anoyying what ever you decide it is best, its because you want to do it. I have also been posting more regularly on mal forums and I'm loving it. I meet so many great people and read awesome opinions

Most subreddits tend to go down the echo chamber route at some point.

Honorable mention goes to AskReddit for regurgitating the same fucking question 50 times a week. "Sexhavers of reddit, what sexy song was playing while you were having the sexiest sex you've ever sexed?"
Bunch of fucking horndogs smh.

Reddit is just bad all around, most the mods abuse their power to an insane level to cultivate their subs to their whims. They exercise the authority to ban over petty reasons or over merely being active in a sub they dislike regardless of what you post and whether it is even a rule violation or not.

And there are likebots purchased by groups in order to make certain things more popular and promoted than they actually are. Front page especially is trash

you know, I used to use Tumblr but I just gradually stopped, I think all the scrolling just got kinda meh, like scrolling on fb with different content. I was definitely more engaged on there though. And I liked the people there too. I like memes and art, but I just wanna talk to people occasionally and it not be through the tumblr post system.

this is the first I've heard of the bots. What, do I live under a rock? haha. Anyways, yeah, I don't usually get in trouble with mods, but the 2 times I was it was a "FR, I'm banned for *what*?" one refused to explain beyond posting a rule that didn't apply to the second time I had said anything in that sub, and they just permanently banned me from contacting their mods, lol.

Anyways

I am loving this site WAY more. Perhaps my standards are low but I don't mind debate. Sure I'll get tired of the extreme views but I don't know, it already feels like it's a lot better balanced here

Yea, it's awful. I get *really* tired of it, and I get tired of the women hate over there. I unsubbed for a long ass time, watched anime loved it, talked to a few anime fans *anywhere else* and then thought "maybe it's not so bad anymore" but it is, if anything was left unaffected by covid, it's the r/anime subs.

(Also I just wanna point out Utena is hands down my favorite anime)

I can't say I love it here. Some of the users on here can be pretty aggressive and imposing with their opinions. There are those that also lack maturity. The only thing that keeps me here is the varied discussions topics as well as it being another anime tracking site that I can use besides Anilist.

Bots are advertised on a few sites to increase like ratios so must the popularity of posts that make it big is likely synthetic

+1 that. Reddit was cool in 2012 when it was fresh and organic. Now it's more hivemind. You get some good reactions here and there but ridiculous takes get traction.

MAL forums are better.
