| Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Light and Lelouch(And L) don't hold anything towards the intelligence of the main characters. Each character is incredibly smart, however they are also human and the show makes you understand that. Basically Death Note and Code Geass got their ideas from this anime. |

The characters in question are, as burntlettuce said, also portrayed like properly fleshed out human characters, in contrast to the rather one sided and plot device nature of Light, L and Lelouch. The rest of the huge cast is also splendid naturally, even the side characters are more developed than your average anime's protagonists. Gankutsuou might be of interest too, the Count is clearly charismatic and Machiavellian in his schemes. Revolutionary Girl Utena also has some characters like that, though they aren't the protagonists. |
