Power-scaling is basically measuring how powerful one character using another character as comparasion. For example: A is stronger than B, And B is equal to C, So A is stronger than C (A > B = C).

Yes, it'll ruin it, it'll ruin everything that tries it.

All narratives are built upon tension. For the bulk of any storyline, it is entirely up in the air whether or not the protagonist will achieve their goal - we know that in all likelihood, they will, but in any given situation there have to appear to be insurmountable barriers that put that in doubt.

When an author attempts to have a rigid hierarchy of "X beats Y," then, such a desired balance falls apart. Either the protagonist's opponent is weaker than them, meaning there is no tension in the two fighting each other, or the opponent is stronger, which means that they've been written into a corner, with the only solutions being either an asspull powerup or just outright ignoring the established information, both of which are bad writing.

Put simply, for any story to work properly, powerscaling must be avoided at all costs.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

I would't say ruin, but it will definitely affect my enjoyment.

D. Gray-man anime is the perfect example of this:
New level enemy appears, everyone struggles and barely defeats it by combining their strength.

And then few eps later hordes of that same enemy are defeated by random characters.

I don't think power scaling alone can ruin the anime, but it would definitely be a contributing factor to a decrease in its quality.

Seven Deadly Sins is a great example of this, as it started implementing literal character RPG stats in Season 2 onwards, much to the detriment of the show's potential for battle tension (eg. "Oh, that bad guy is 10,000 points stronger than you. Well, I guess there's no way in hell you can beat him, but let's not be surprised and find that out over time by getting to see him curb-stomping your hopeless ass, shall we?")

That is why I don't even like Power Fantasies

I always prefer Power of strategy even over Power of Friendship

Only in rare cases, Power Ups are considered necessary and I accept it
For example,

Or

Or

All of these examples have one thing in common STAKES are involved which helps in maintaining Balance. That is why I love those series and consider it as PINNACLE OF HUMANITY.
