Dunno. I am guessing their favorites are used as "characters I want to fuck" ... I mean harem ranking.

That could actually make sense, and a red flag for me.

One's favourite characters maybe those with whom one can relate to the most or one wishes to be like. So, maybe gender bias is not the real issue. I look up to any character with a personality i like irrespective of their gender

I have mostly males in my favs because men typically make for better and more interesting characters. If you disagree and think gender doesn't matter then you're cringe, simple as. I will respect you more if you say that girls make for better characters. I disagree but I can understand it.

I'd love to be cringe then lol.

But anyway... Usually I don't care about a character's gender. My favorite characters are pretty much 50:50 to me. And Nanachi doesn't really have a gender.
I think good authors write their characters as a human being (or better saying: a person) and not as a specific gender. At least that shouldn't be top priority, besides some influences from gender-specific socialization, but that's not what makes an individual in the end.

mine used to be 100% male characters until i changed it up a bit but i think it's probably (in my case) due to the anime i've watched. the girls i have are from one piece and except that i don't remember watching an anime with female characters that really stood out to me. i love a lot of female characters but they're not necessarily my favs.

While I do have male favorite characters like Setsuna Sanzenkai and Hayate Ayasaki, I would like to view my favorites list here on MAL as a MyTop20WaifusAsOfNowList of some sort.

My favourites are in there for a variety of reasons. I relate to them, I think they're cute or hot, I like their design from an artists or tailors perspective, I think they're cool. It really just depends on the character. My list is split 7:3 favouring girls which kinda surprised me a bit. I thought I would have more hot dudes on there but I guess other qualities in girls won out.

I have an 8:2 split in favor of male characters but it's honestly purely coincidental. I just add characters I really enjoy and they've just happened to be the better written characters among my favourite shows.

Many female characters in the genres I frequent are pretty underdeveloped (since they’re not often main characters). Not most, but still a lot. It’s getting better nowadays.
Also, I’m a guy, and I don’t have crushes on female characters. That is also part of it.

I also don’t have enough space lol. Nobara Kugisaki and Anya from Spy x Family would be on my favs list if I had room, for example. At the same time, I’m also missing Aki from Chainsaw Man. I think I have 2 female: 3 non-binary (this was unexpected) : 4 male. Pochita does not count.

Because they can.

I really don't see anyone thinking to themselves "Oh, I should only have all boys/girls in my favorites because I despise the writing of the opposite gender."

It was already said above, not everyone is interested in the writing of the character, but probably the character itself.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

True, gender shouldn't really matter. I think characters should generally be genderless. We need to get rid of the outdated notion of gender because all that matters is if they're well-written or not; gender is completely arbitrary and gets in the way more than not because bigots will use gender in order to oppress and demean decent human beings (or better saying: a person. Don't want to use a word that contains "man" after all).

Statistically however characters in people's favorites shouldn't be worse than a 7:3 split if they consider the two equal on *rough* terms.

If someone has 80+% of their favorite characters being from one specific gender, then they clearly like one gender in anime more than the other. There have been a variety of responses as to why:

"Because I like waifus/husbandos."
"Because many male characters are bland self inserts."
"Because many female characters are just waifu bait."
"Because I watch mostly shonen/isekai, and the female/male characters aren't written well in those."
"Coincidence."
etc.

And I didn't say there was anything wrong with preferring one gender of character over the other, no matter what the reason was. I asked to see the variety of opinions on the matter, though I will admit the responses skewed slightly more "waifu/husbando" than I expected.

I think it all depends on what people's personal preferences are. People who enjoy Idol anime are going to gravitate towards female characters. People who enjoy shounen anime are more likely to enjoy male characters.

I only have one girl in my favorites, and it's not because I'm a fan of how well-written her character is, or because of how well I identify with her.

Most people seem to relate to the same gender IG

My list of favorite characters are all men. I tend to lean more towards characters that I can relate to, but there are also characters who are there because I genuinely believe they are well written and two who are there because I like them, regardless of whether they are well written or not.

It's not that I don't like female characters. Just that a lot of the animes I watch are for a male audience, so men tend to be more interesting as the plot is centered around them. Also, I am not part of the "waifu culture", so no, not going to put a girl on my list just because want to fuck her.
