Well JK does have good characters and it's not all about the main character. Primarily the female characters are the best of the best. They are just so strong. But I can't say if it's best or not

But I can’t say I’ve seen any other shounen approach this theme

I don't think any character is the best in terms of writing, but the characters are well established, meaning they have reasonable goals and objectives, while also having understandable motivation. Megumi with his daddy issues, Itadori with his existential crisis, Nobara just being Nobara, Maki with her revenge, Mai with her hatred and so on.

Idk if you've read the manga, but do read it, it picks up from chp.63, and characters are more defined imo

They're lovable and servicible which is all that matters, why bother comparing them to anything else? Though I'd also disagree on the female characters thing zeDdo said - I'd agree their good but by no means the best of female characters.
