I wanted to start this because I was curious on how everyone came across Yuri and how and when they started watching.

Back when I was younger I used to watch Pokemon on TV because it was on when I ate breakfast with my adorable little brother. I knew Sailor Moon existed but I was not interested and did not watch it. In fact, my parents did not have a TV until my older sister convinced them to get one for us when I was about nine years old. Thus I never really watched anime or TV. My best friend's brother was a Japanophiliac Everquest playing nerd that we called "the gremlin" and got us all into watching Hikaru no Go and we almost bought a Go board too but we were poor. I also only saw Love Hina and Girls Bravo as well, none of my friends were big on anime at all, we thought it was stupid, just to give you the idea I had no plan to watch it.

So actually it was an article I read about Yuri that caused me to discover it. Right in my last year of high school some gf's of mine were blabbing on to me about the damn show South of Nowhere, a show that I was happy to see air but I didn't really like it. I looked up some info on the show online and stumbled upon AfterEllen.com, which I never visited before, and on the site they listed all kinds of media, including an article on Yuri. I read it and one of the Yuri they brought up was Yami to Bōshi. I watched it online and was like "OMG they make cartoons with this in it? Holy god!!!" There was like fanservice and they kissed! I wondered if it aired on Saturday mornings in Japan. I was shocked, I didn't know there was a Yuri. I wanted to find more and came across El Cazador, which was new at the time, and Noir, and then Strawberry Panic... and thus it all started from there. I stumbled upon MAL this year.

My first anime was Lucky Star, and after I finished watching it, I was reading a fanfic about it that happened to mention Strawberry Panic, so i watched that, and i LOVED it.

I saw a picture of Yumi and Sachiko on someones yuku profile and thought "Hm, they look so cute I have to find out what this is about...". Never having watch animu before (aside from those morning Sailor Moon dubs as a child) I watched one episode of Marimite and was like...

I HAVE FOUND MY TRUE LOVE.

:D

And that is how I became the fangirl I am today.

I was browsing Youtube, and was looking for AMV's to watch. At the time I was only getting into anime, and was already a fan of yaoi. When I came across a AMV with Shizuma, and Nagisa and at first I wished Shizuma was a guy, because she was so beautiful, and would be really attractive as a male. But as I got to thinking, a few days after something compelled me to watch it, despite knowing it was a yuri. Needless to say I caved, and I'm glad I did because I got hooked on SP, along with other yuri/shoujo ai.
What you saw at the castle on that windy night ,and what you saw at the bridge last night .. how I smiled, never utter a word to anyone. If you dare speak .. I will find where you are .. And I will kill you. Kill you. I will rip you apart .. crush your bones And eat your flesh.. I will drink your blood. I will .. devour you.

Well, originally I wasn't into yuri at all. To be honest, I had just started watching anime around that time and at some point, I discovered yaoi/shounen-ai. While watching the anime Loveless, however, I came across the only two lesbians on that show. I was originally bothered by the fact that there were lesbians in my yaoi anime, but I eventually grew curious and ended up watching my first yuri anime, Strawberry Panic.

Well that was all back when I still wasn't sure of myself and believed that I was straight. And well, here I am now, and the tables have turned completely. At any rate, I'm really glad I stumbled upon it. :D

A friend of mine mentioned she was watching Strawberry Panic, and it sounded interesting, so I downloaded it and watched it in the course of a couple days and absolutely fell in love with it. I have to say, it is just about the only yuri that I have been completely satisfied with, and its definitely one the best and one of my favorite romance series of all time. Because of yuri and Strawberry Panic, I was able to find romance in other forms and came across incest anime like Koi Kaze, which just truly tugs at your heart strings and is really very beautiful. ^_^

Haruka and Michiru from Sailor Moon were the first yuri couple I saw and liked immediately. It was about 15 years ago. Then there were Utena and Anthy, and Juri, of course. These ladies made me into a yuri fan. And I don't see those true feelings and "real" relationships in most of the newer series as much as I saw them in the older ones.

stumbled across Strawberry Panic on this site, unusual romance is the best kind, so I watched it and it's still in my top 5, though after re-watching marimite and SBP over a few times, i'd have to say MSGM is better overall.

I was just getting into anime enough to actually search for episodes to watch online, where I stumbled across the Lucky Star opening. I decided the opening was hella-catchy and went on to watch the series. That was the anime that propelled me into Japan-land. While watching Lucky Star and reading the comments about Konata x Kagami or Minami x Yutaka, I started thinking, "Oh, wow, they're right. That sounds like fun to write about."

I hopped on over to FF.net and started reading Lucky Star yuri fanfics, got hooked, and decided to see if there were other similar anime. I was soon marathoning Strawberry Panic, Kashimashi, and jumped through hoops to get my hands on anything Candy Boy. Now I can't get enough of shoujo-ai.

I think it was KURAU Phantom Memory. I know most would say it isn't really Yuri. But the loving bond between Kurau and Christmas got me interested in the romance/love story side of Yuri.

Damn... I can't remember...Oo
Umm, I saw a random scene from SP on youtube, and in the comments everyone was like "Ooh, I love yuri" So I was like "Wait, what's yuri..? Oo" It took me a moment to figure it out and then idk... at some point I started reading Yuri manga?
Lol, sorry but I really have no idea what actually happened after I saw the vid...
Though I'm pretty sure that I had tons of yuri pictures even before I actually started watching/reading something...

Okay, but now I feel stupid, I'm probably the one person in here who didn't watch Strawberry Panic... The thing Is, I downloaded the first episode ages ago, watched it and then....well, nothing...Oo And I keep thinking "I have to watch SP after I finish *insert anime that I'm currently watching*" and in the end, I never do...Well...I have to watch It after I finish Jigoku Shoujo...

Well mi first yuri was candy boy and I only watched because I thought it was about a boy but the surprise it was about 2 girls and well it has nothing to do with the name of the anime but I say is well-designed so I watched all. In the end it was an regular anime.
But then I found MAL and I found it was in the category of Yuri. then I watch Sasameki Koto.

AND

I'd have to say my favorite individual characters would be Hiyori and Konata. What lulz.

I... don't remember at all.
I think I saw a little of Utena a long time ago, but I didn't know it was called yuri.

Then, as many of you here, I came across a ShizumaxNagisa picture, and it totally mesmerized me.
I wanted to know more about it.
I found the series in youtube, and I watched it all in a couple of days.
That was like... 3 years ago.
How I wish I had discovered it sooner xD

Im not sure if its because of mai-hime or because of the videos that my sempai posted on her fs account.
I was watching mai-hime (or rather shizuru and natsuki only) and then later on I realized that shizuru has feelings for Natsuki.. I fast-forward the scenes that doesn't inlclude the two then I was like "did kami-sama heard my prayers" when the two kissed. Then after surfing the net for pics and infos about them I stumbled upon a page from their fanfic.. I was totally hooked and got addicted to it instantly. But even though I started reading fanfics I still didn't know that they make animes about girlxgirl love. Then I visited my sempai's page (note: my sempai is a lezzie the butchie type but she's so handsome) as I scrolled down I accidentally clicked on her videos and stumbled upon a sailormoon video that has a yuri scene on it. I asked her if it was only made by a fan, she said no and she told me about yuri.
I know its confusing, im confused too hehe.

Back when I was in high school, I was watching an episode of Sailor Moon one afternoon. It was about a "True Love" contest, and Haruka and Michiru were competing (I didn't know anything about them at the time). I remember that in the English dub, they were referred to as cousins, and I thought it was very odd for two cousins to be competing in something like that. After a little research, I learned what their relationship actually was in the original version, and I became very interested in them. After that, I started reading a lot of Sailor Moon fanfiction, pretty much all yuri-themed.

This year my interest in yuri was jump started when I watched Maria-sama ga Miteru, which has become my favorite series now. ^^

A more accurate question would be, how can you not "discover" yuri? I watched a bunch of anime & found Nanoha (You may say its all subtest, but adult women living together, sharing the same bed and being Vivio's two mommies is rather overt to me) and Maria-sama. I don't really scour the net for Yuri, nor do I refuse to watch/read non-yuri. I tend to like the aesthetic of Yuri, so I watch it & now, if a description sounds "ehh" the fact that it has a Yuri descriptor means I will give it a shot.

If you want a more dramatic story of discovery, I could make one involving Ninjas and a Gay PRide parade.....

Pretty sure that the first show that I concretely recognized as containing shoujo-ai was Serial Experiments Lain (it's not too strongly shoujo-ai, but the relationship is anything but subtextal). I think that the show that made me prefer girl-girl to girl-guy was Saki, although I could definitely be mistaken.

I think I got more curious into yuri when I saw that Chloe (Noir) had romantic feelings for Kirika. Thus sparked my interest and made me look into yuri more. This happened my Sophomore year of high school, around the time Strawberry Panic came out. After SP, I started to look into Marimite, Kannazuki no Miko and Kashimashi. By my senior year, I've been wrapped up with yuri, shojo-ai and reverse-traps.

(I discovered many more older animes that have yuri/shojo-ai as a second genre and I realized how yuri was another impact of my anime culture.)

Lately I've been into more manga than anime, simply because there is more yuri manga and doujinshi than anime ; s ;!

I've been watching anime ever since I can remember .. I watched anime like Lady Lady, little princess sara, daddy long legs, Ninja, Remi, ... and many many more ..

I was about 11 or 12 when I watched Oniisama .. and bcoz of school I missed many episodes .. plus in my country there was some scenes that were cut out :'( .. so most of the time I didn't know what's going on LOL .. the story was ruined for me .. but I always loved it even though I never really watched it ..

and when I was 13 .. I stopped watching anime ..

but about 3 years ago when I was 19 .. I was setting with a freind.. then she started talking about anime and stuff .. as I listened to her I suddenly remembered Oniisama ( brother dear brother) ..

so when I went back home I immediately logged into a torrent website and searched for Oniisama .. and downloaded it .. and when I finally watched it .. I was soooo happy that I got the chance to watch this msterpeice .. and Oniisama is considered as yuri but I didn't know that it's yuri .. I didn't even know that there is something called yuri until I read about it in an article over the internet ..

and ever since I watched Oniisama .. I never stopped watching anime every kind of anime yuri or shoujo and everything.. and i'm planning to watch even more ;p

LOOOOL .. I was surprised too .. even though my favorite anime ( oniisama ) is considered as yuri .. I didn't know that there's something called yuri ..

in Oniisama U will love every character in the anime even the ungrateful bitchy "Miya-sama" .. I loved and hated her at the same time .. it's probably bcoz my favorite character "Rei-sama -AKA- Saint Juste-sama" was in love with that evil Miya ..

wooooow just remembering that anime brings tears to my eyes .. I watched it over 3 times ;p

I was on youtube and was trying to find the song 'let the bodies hit the floor' because my brother had suggested it. I ended up finding a AMV about Gaara from Naruto. This got me interested in Anime, because before that I didn't associate with it as one of my friends was totally obsessed to the point of my annoyance. I started talking about it at school (only with those who were into anime as to not annoy others :P) and one my friends was into yaoi, and made me check out the Naruto pairings (Sasuke and Naruto anyone?). While looking up the Yaoi pairings I ran into some Yuri pairings. I can't remember which Yuri I read or watched first but Kannazuki no Miko was probably it. I enjoyed all of it but the ending which kind of made me sad (luckily or unluckily the anime ending was different, but I still liked the manga better for some reason). Then I read Strawberry Panic and found the manga awesome, but they had ended it, so I checked out the anime because it had been completed. I was quite sad to find they had changed a lot of the plot and stuff, but it wasn't that bad altogether. Somewhere in between there I watched Candy Boy which was fantastic, I think it's amazing they packed so much in to 13 minutes; I absolutely adored it. I would say Candy Boy is the best Yuri/Shojo Ai I have ever come across. If they had made it 10x as long I would've watched every second and loved it even more. This is coming from someone who was totally up in arms about the fact that they were twins. Ah the good ol' days...

Wow seems like so many of us got onto yuri through Sailor Moon. I remember being very shocked to see yuri in a mainstream anime when I was younger.

What really got me into yuri however was Milk Morinaga's NanaxHitomi stories. Absolutely blew my yuri virgin mind.

I think it was during the time about maybe a year ago when i started getting into anime and manga. I mean before then all i watched was naurto(sadly yes) and before that all i watched were dubbed versions of yugioh, pokemon, DBZ all that kinda stuff.

Anyways when i did start watching basically anything ive heard about or thought was good, I always went for those shoujo titles when randomly picking out mangas and such and i believe it was reading kashimashi that started to get me into it(not that there wasnt any interest at all before). Afterwards i basically ended up watching kashimashi, reading strawberry panic(the manga), being disappointed in it and watching the anime instead and then being extremely happy with the anime my search for yuri began.
