I started Gintama and was wondering if it gets better. I am currently on episode 47 and I don't understand the hype. I do like the series so far but it doesn't seem as good as everyone praises it for.

Of course. (well for me at least) Once the serious arcs start kicking in, it really goes to another level for me. But tbh, 47 episodes is still quite a bit even knowing how much of a slow start gintama is referred to have. But yes, it does improve lots over time for me

Yes it does, it gets amazing, but I don’t blame you for not liking it at first, as I hated it as well. The first good arc starts at episode 58, so you’re almost there, but the first truly amazing arc starts at episode 210.

Just keep watching it, and you'll see how worth it watching Gintama is.

In this world shrouded in darkness, I learned there was someone who’d been struggling along with me. That alone is enough.

It just keeps getting better and better it never stop improving itself and you're near the first serious arc you'll definitely gonna get hooked into the show from there but remember keep this thing in mind that gintama is a comedy series show don't expect too much action in the beginning of the series but I can assure you there are some of the best arcs in anime history with my all time fav fight too just keep watching it and enjoy your journey with goatama

It will get better but if you happen to extremely dislike the first year of the first season (1-49) then I wouldn't recommend you continuing. The good news is that you did say that you still liked it and that is a sign that you will likely love the series. The second year (50-99) has some moments of slowness but is all and all already a big improvement and trust me, it will still get better after that.

It’s not for everyone 🀷🏼‍♂️ Every episode is gold and I think by 47 you either love it or just think it’s meh. I doubt your opinion will change much the further you get into it. Gintama is what it is. If your looking for a super serious show look elsewhere.

Can anyone tell me is it okay to skip to the first serious arc, episode 58?

Hahahahahahaha...can relate lol

i used to think exactly the same thing..."Does it get better?"
Seriously i didnt understand why people love this anime so much lol..
When i was around episode 51 at the moment , I still can't understand the hype , i dropped it without hesitation...
Yeah , after that i picked it up back , watch 2 more episodes , and dropped it again...

And for the 2nd time , i picked it up again and watch till episode 61...

And OMG , for me it DID gets good around ep58-61 (Benizakura arc)...but i didnt think of it as a masterpiece yet , it's a 9/10 for me at the moment , but when i reached ep 100+ , i was convinced that this anime is a masterpiece xD
(Now for me Gintama is an 11/10)

I used to dislike Gintama , but now look at my Favorite anime list

There's no point in doing that, it's a bunch of comedy after Benizakura.
Serious arcs are scarce and scattered throughout the show (because duh, even comedy show like Gintama still has plot progression). Most of those serious arcs were also brimmed with comedy anyways.

Just skip eps 1-2 then watch the entire thing.

please don't. Not only do you lose out on some solid worldbuilding, character introductions, and subtle characterizations, but a lot of the best parts of Gintama aren't found in its serious arcs and instead in fillers and the "comedy" episodes.

At Least watch till the first arc end but if u still find it not to ur liking then drop it I really wouldn't want people to shit on it saying "it's overrated" and remember foremost it's an comedy show first with action sprinkled in between...at least until around 300
Blah blah blah blah .... So annoying. Are you bastards in heat or something?

Also the first movie should be watched right after you finish that first serious arc while it’s still fresh in your head. It’s a movie covering that big arc but with better animation, music and quality. Thanks dude, you too, have a good night πŸŒ™

yeah so true
Like even when the aot came and toppled the rankings gintama fandom was the most quiet except one forum at the end congratulating it retaining the previous rank
After all it ain't a series to make others understand forcefully 😌😌
You just watch it and appreciate how good it is without forcing the opinion on someone imo

Thanks Sorachi sensei!!!

When someone says it’s a really stupid anime which doesn’t know what they are doing.... I’m like yeah that’s true even Sorachi sensei says it and we all fans collectively agreeπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

The "serious" arcs are simply a masterpiece. The rest of the series, that is the majority, is ok but it doesn't deserve so much credit in my opinion.

I mean if you still didn't find any of the episode interesting enough to keep you invested and it is making you feel like you drop the series you honestly should I mean it does have serious arcs which I think you have yet to see but if the comedy isn't making you interested in the show to watch more then just drop it....for me personally I love gintama but I get it why some people may find it difficult

i never thought it was bad to begin with cause i didnt go into gintama with huge expectations,i just wanted a chill comedy slice of life which gintama is for the most part, and as for it getting better it keeps on getting better, once you start getting hooked to the show it still keeps getting better and better, the show constantly tops itself

the beauty about serious arcs is that those goofy characters you have spent most of your time with show their serious side which makes it more exciting and its a comedy anime so there gonna be hits and misses because well comedy is subjective but i like references and call backs so gintama can be regarded as one of greatest shonens of all time according to me

I'm on episode 63 now and I can say it does get better my advice try to get to the first serious which is episode 58 or watch the first movie. I liked it since the beginning but I can't binge watch this try watching something else along with it. If you don't like it then it's not for you Gintama is definitely not for everyone.

Yes it definitely gets a whole lot better! I think Sorachi was still trying to perfect his humour back then, but he definitely gets really good at it. (To keep you looking forward, the highest rated season is between episodes 201 - 251, but my personal favourite episodes are 76-81 and 98-99. So you won’t have to wait long!) Like you, I didn’t quite enjoy the first 50 or so episodes, but it’s like what the others said, it definitely gets better from episode 58 onwards. I went back to rewatch the first season after I completed the series, and definitely gained a newfound appreciation for them. But I wouldn’t recommend for new fans to skip because it does give important foundation and introduction characters’ backstories.

I guess I like slice of life or smth. I’m on ep 49 and it’s the best anime I have watched due to the comedy. My anime ranking criteria is bad. If it makes me laugh it’s a favourite.

I'm with you on that. I also started of thinking this is the most overrated trash ever. Reached the benizakura arc and felt things were getting better and during the 85th episode onwards there was no going back. The fillers are also some of the funniest things I've ever seen

I remember watching just one episode per day or two days of gintama when I first started it. But after like 60 episodes I binged it. Ppl say it gets better after the first serious arc. That's true but the comedy episodes are also getting better and you just crave for more and more.

People, you know we can't stop even the smallest amount of toxicity in the fandom. The other day I found someone from a forum being toxic and a new watcher rightfully called it out. And I mean the Gintama fandom is still toxic, but the good kind that we shouldn't be ashamed of. There are a lot of Gintama clips everywhere and when someone talks about Gintama, we come together like moths to a flame. Even this forum is proof. Let's face it, in terms of sheer dedication, we are in line with the JoJo fanbase (just not as loud as they are).

When I watched it first it was so boring that I dropped it. But later after a lot of praise by the viewers and seeing the rating it received I decided to be patient and watched the complete series. Now it has become one of my favourite anime series.
