I saw this commercial, but to me, it makes no sense. What do the characters from that anime have to do with McDonald's?

I think it's because of 40th anniversary of the original manga. I wonder if they will do something special for this anniversary🤔? Like Movie, Live Drama or new remake anime

Hmm, that sounds plausible.
I thought it was just clever marketing, like mix (pun intended) a popular company with a popular manga and you'll get a well-selling product.
But since there's an anniversary this might be only the beginning? Would be nice if it inspires people to give something new to the fans^^

This marketing campaign afaik, is to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Touch manga. This indeed is considered to be Adachi's magnum opus and is famous in Japan to this date.
Just imagine, the manga ran for 5 odd years only and sold over 100 million copies [in the 80s].

Mix on the other hand is shaping up to be a wonderful manga.
