Hello guys! Hope you all are doing fine in these strange times.

I was watching the third Made in Abyss movie yesterday (great content btw) and something caught my attention. It is a one way trip, no coming back, most likely death awaits at the end of the journey. I can't remember if I have watched anything anime with a similar premise or setting like this. Sacrifices, meaningful deaths, choices that can't be undone are all things I find amusing.

Hope I'm being clear enough. If not, please point it out so I can clarify what's on my mind.

So if there is anything like that you can recommend I would appreciate it.

Right now I can only think about 3, these are all kinda old, from the 2000's:
Wolf's Rain
Basilisk
Samurai 7

No problem if it's old.

I always heard about Wolf's Rain here and there, maybe it's time to watch it.

I haven't watched the remake yet, but the original is still good, I can say this without any kind of nostalgia.

Rather surprised no one's mentioned Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryouko ("Girls' Last Tour") yet.

"Make friends with despair."

Seems like those anime with cute aesthetics that you think "Oh, so cute, must be something light-hearted!", then some episodes later you are crying your eyes out.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations!

i feel like dororo kinda fits this category. it's about a guy who was born with no limbs, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or skin because his dad traded them for power to demons. he eventually travels around, killing demons to get back his body parts, but doing this starts to cause drought and war.

I watched the first 3 episodes, it was fine, but didn't like it enough to watch it all. I saw some parts of the last episode just to see if he got his parts back and well, the story seemed to have escalated a lot.

Should put it in my dropped list.

Casshern Sins - post apocalyptic world where there are barely any humans left. Most of the people there are robots, but cuz of an event called "The Ruin" every robot is sentenced to a slow but inevitable death. The main character is the cause of the ruin.

Gunslinger Girl - A series with a rather silly concept that takes it and the consequences of it very seriously. A show set in Italy where little girl cyborg assassins do the dirty work for the government, and they're supervised by "handlers" who are like big brother figures to them kinda. The conflict of it is that all these girls have a pretty screwed up backstory, and while they're technically saved through the "cyborgification", they'll still most likely die in a few years if not dying from missions. The anime adaption of it is incomplete though so I'd have to rec the manga, but like it's an amazing manga imo.

As for 2 other things, I'm kinda cheating since it's only partially anime but Danganronpa series. Literally the whole franchise's concept is about who ends up living or dying till the end, and you have a lot of sad and emotional moments with not that many people alive at the end.

As for the 2nd, I know you've already watched the 90's adaption of Berserk. However, I'd highly advise reading it from the beginning (cuz anime leaves out a lot of stuff even in the arc it adapts) some time, it really is a masterpiece imo.

I love how MAL recommendations are full of stuff I had no idea existed. This topic alone provide anime for a few months(I'm really slow when it comes to watching stuff nowadays). Casshern Sins looks good, definitely will look it up.

As for manga, it's funny you mentioned Berserk, as I downloaded it a few days ago and plan to read it. I was catching up to the One Piece manga(got bored of the anime) and found myself really enjoying the manga version(like way more). I have read some stuff here and there over the years(no complete series, just a volume here and there), but didn't even bother to include on the list. I will add Gunslinger Girl to the PTW list for future reference.

The Danganronpa series! I'm planning to buy the PS4 game that includes 1 and 2, heard great things about these. Is the anime based on the games? Will it spoil anything? Have you played it?

Hope you enjoy Berserk whenevs you read it.

Yeah I've experienced all the Danganronpa games. So Danganronpa anime and it's visual novels are weird. It's a bit confusing to go through, but the order is:

1 - 2 - Ultra Despair Girls (a 3rd person shooter spinoff that while not having the best gameplay, still has excellent characters and story imo) - DR 3 anime (this one has a weird way of watching it where you watch ep 1 of DR 3 Future, then ep 1 of DR 3 Despair, then ep 2 of future, ep 2 of despair, and so on with DR 3 Hope being the final bit of that anime) - V3

There's also a DR 0 light novel that while necessary, you may want to check out. It takes place before 1, BUT you'll want to read it after you're done with at least 2 cuz it spoils some stuff for 1 & 2.
