It can be done well but it usually isn't.

Samurais are my least favorite to be honest. I thought shows like Rurouni Kenshin and Afro Samurai were okay. But I can't say that the protagonists for those shows left much of an impression on me. Kenshin was kind of your average nice guy, which there's nothing wrong with that of course. But the only times the show would get interesting was when he was pushed to the edge and became his alter ego.
