I am an adult, 31/F if its important I've enjoyed hundreds of shows over the years, but there's a common theme that i'm growing tired of.

The main characters (in anything with a good plot) are teenagers. They are virgins, and shy about ssex. At the first mention of handholding they start having nosebleeds and panic attacks. And the show is a constant tease about the romance

I'm not enjoying this aspect, and i'm interested in finding some things that buck the trend. I'd like an anime about adults, doing adult things, who can handle sex and relationships in their stride, without acting like children about it

Most importantly i'm interested in a good plot with relateable characters. Maybe i'm just too old to relate to teenage protagonists anymore, but they can't be all there is

I'm not specifically looking for hentai. I'm not opposed to it either, but in my experience most hentai either lacks a plot, or the plot acts as a flimsy framing device to setup lewd situations. I don't want a show where sex is just the entire point of things. I just want characters who have sex, who have had sex, and for whom it isn't a big deal. Who aren't bogged down in constant insecurities about romance and can turn their attention to bigger things in life.

I'm not too specific about genres or other themes. I like mystery, horror, scifi and fantasy all roughly equally. I can appreciate good writing regardless of the setting. Nothing really shocks me, i'm open to most extreme themes. The few non hentai shows i've found that feature sex tend to have tons of gory violence too. I'm okay with that, though its not the goal.

Mnemosyne is about the closest thing i've found recently to what i'm looking for. I loved the plot about immortality and protecting a family down the ages.
I've also had some enjoyment with Simoun, spec ops asuka, and Mirai Nikki, which were bizarre scifi plots that happened to bring up questions about sexuality in the background. They struggle to escape the flustered blushing stereotype though

I'm sure there's plenty more, and I'm hoping you guys have some nice ideas. Apologies if this thread came across as overly specific or vague

Berserk (1997 version is the best, 3rd movie is also worth watching for a better ending)
Kasei Yakyoku - I highly recommend this
Ookami Kodomo Ame to Yuki, but that was kid of.. questionable
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, if I recall correctly (it's been some time since I watched it)
Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu
Youjuu Toshi
Kemonozume

Your list is almost empty so I'm not sure if you've seen it already, I'll just recommend everything that comes to mind.

Something centred around romance:
Nana
Paradise Kiss
Kuzu no Honkai

Not so much:
Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
Aoi Bungaku Series

Not at all, but when it comes to it, there's no shyness or immaturity:
Kenpuu Denki Berserk
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Banana Fish
Shinsekai yori
Golden Kamuy
Kaze no Na wa Amnesia

nice replies already, yay
My list is almost empty because i just made an account today and barely started filling it, however i've seen almost none of these, will poke through them <3

Not too into history, or romance without an interesting setting. I love scifi though so i'm going to give Kiseijuu/Parasyte a try first

Nozoki Ana is "near-hentai" with sex scenes but no genitals shown. A guy moves into an apartment with a hole in the wall that connects to the apartment of the young woman next door. Warning - contains an attempted rape scene.

Nodame and Chiaki are sleeping together in the sequels to Nodame Cantabile, but the sex is implied.

Some of the scenes in Sarai-ya Goyou ("House of Five Leaves") take place in a brothel. Set in the Edo period, so it might be too historical for you.

hello lovely people, oh my there's been even more replies.

I finished parasyte. It started off strong, but i felt like the story lost drive and direction near the end, and eventually concluded with something that didn't feel much like an "ending". Seems like it'd be an interesting universe to make another season in, but it doesn't look like thats happening.

After reading through recommendations here, I decided on Shinsekai Yori next. The post apocalyptic premise just seems too interesting

The anime Hidamari no Ki concerns a pair of fellows in the years just before the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. One is a samurai, the other a doctor. The doctor is, in fact, the great-grandfather of the path-breaking manga-ka Tezuka Osamu. For years there were only four fansubbed episodes, but the show has been revived by Orphan fansubs and is now completely subtitled. Adult sexual relations take place throughout the story. On the more benign side, Tezuka-sensei likes to frequent houses of prostitution. On the more malign side, there are a rape scenes.

The story is quite fascinating as well as it follows a number of significant events in the 1850s from the earthquake that leveled Edo to the arrival of the US envoy in 1856. (That's as far as I've gotten so far.) One main source of dramatic tension concerns the efforts of the Shogunate and its affiliated medical personnel to block the practice of Western ("Dutch") medical practices like vaccination against smallpox. Both Tezuka and his father are strongly committed to Western practices which endangers their lives.

Kuzu no honkai (English title is "scum's wish") - about teenagers (and two other characters who are adults) exploring sex, lgbt sexuality, os being gay is okay, what being "in love" means, the difference between "lust" and "love", understanding feelings of guilt caused by sexual desires, what sexual fantasies are good or bad, how to overcome what you would call "forbidden love".
I know you said that you didn't want something without teenagers in it, but kuzu no honkai is one of the only anime out there that's main subject is on sex (and isnt a hentai) and it tackles sex without being all immature about it. it has 12 eps.

banana fish - it's main subject isnt sex but it still includes it. its about the dark side of sex, tackling rape, child pornography, sex trafficking/grooming, paedophilia in general and the abuse of young boys in the gay community. like I said this isn't its main topic though, the show being about gang wars, drugs and a romance. however its very good and i'd recommend it!! (I mean, its my favourite anime) it has 24 eps.

REC is about balancing a sexual relationship with work responsibility. I think you'll like it.

Nana has the best approach to adult relationships in anime. The characters do make rash decisions, but not because they're children. Because love often makes us immature and is relied upon to patch our insecurities (the toxicity of co-dependency is a major theme in the show). You may get annoyed with all of the drama judging by your post, but the character relatability and eventual growth it's well worth putting up with it.
