There are a lot of website that host subtitles for western media (namely opensubtitles). But I can't find any such websites for anime fansubs. Isn't there anyone archiving only fansubs? It takes a lot of time to prepare them (in comparison to western subs), someone must be archiving it.

IRC/XDCC is your best bet like you go to the fansubbers IRC channel and download their anime releases from there, you can find the fansubbers IRC channel on AniDB for example
this is some group that fansubbed gurren lagann https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=group&gid=3686&aid=4575
and here is there fansub page which have the IRC channel listed https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=group&gid=3686
tutorial for XDCC downloading https://horriblesubs.info/irc-guide/

Do I have to download entire releases instead of only subtitle files? For example I'm watching Samurai Champloo right now. I've found a release with good video but retail subs and I wanna watch, let's say AnimeForever sub for that show. Now do I have to download their entire release and manually rip subs from it? I'm still not convinced this is how people do this. There much be someone archiving only subs.

yes you have to download the entire videos, there is no website i know that collects only subtitles which will have different timings from each fansub group releases, especially on old fansub releases

but there is AnimeTosho that provides subtitles download only for newer anime releases only though so you might want to check that out

I've use AnimeTosho sometimes but I never saw that they had subs. Thanks, I'll check these out. As for your comment about different groups/different timings, I'm sure the archiver can mention which subs a specific release belongs to (like most western subs do). An AnimeTosho link to the respective release would be enough, no?

in AnimeTosho look for the "Attachments" part under a anime release page that is where the fonts and subtitles can be downloaded

ye that can be done but i do not know any websites that do that

There's a "Subtitles" part that contains an 'All Attachments' link. That's what I used earlier. I'm surprised there's no popular site that archives fansubs but still not convinced that no one has done this. So much effort goes into fansubbing. It's reasonable to assume that someone must be archiving it all.

I've been thinking about it for the past few hours but primarily, I would be downloading and ripping subs from IRC releases, right? That's gonna be hard for someone that lives on a 6Mbps connection.

I'd welcome any suggestions though. I'm slowly moving towards watching classics from my watchlist and if I need to hunt down subs a few times again, I'll probably start something, even if its small. If people need something like that, a community will grow around it and the collection will continue to grow.

i think that kind of website is never done before because its useless considering you have to download the videos with the exact timings too so most raw anime videos cannot use those subtitles anyway and different anime videos cannot use the subtitles not intended for their timings too

in anime fansubs the subs and videos are usually fused especially for older anime fansubs that have hard subtitles

Why wouldn't different releases have the same timing? Don't most groups use the same raws? Do fansub groups edit video lengths?

yes fansub groups have different cappers https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Capper so they edit the raw timings differently compared to other fansub groups

they may use the same TV station for the raw but the way they are recorded and edited like cut out the TV commercials adds to the difference in overall timings of the fansub video

Huh. I didn't know that. What about modern anime? Are they still capped from TV or is crunchyroll used for that?

only HorribleSubs (and other webrippers) get webrip from CrunchyRoll or any legal streaming sites while the rest of the traditional fansubbers still uses cappers

I know this is an old thread, but does anyone know if there's a way to find specific fansub releases if I'm unable to find a torrent and I can't find it on any irc channels?

There are sites that host just the sub files that you can play with the video. See if you can find anything there.

I mean if you can find the raws or a soft sub in any language you could play the external sub file with it.

@Perrywinkle3 wait so you have soft subs versions of the fansubs then? you can just use handbrake to reencode the fansubs to hardsubs if you want

@deg I did find some of the subtitle files just a moment ago and I'll definitely consider doing that, though I still want to try and find the original video files if I can.
