A common sentiment in these forums is that the Japanese Anime Industry does not care about opinions of the international market. I was reading the "animegate", and saw this sentiment echoed by most posters there and also other threads.

Do you think this is currently the case? When you think of animators or directors, you might of the term artists and creators. But what about the studio presidents and higher ups of the production committees? I imagine a few may think artists and creators, but I think the more common associated term would be businessmen. And do you think these business men neglect any significant sources of revenue (especially ones with an high rate of anime market growth like China)?

Below is a link to the statistics from the Association of Japanese Animators:
http://aja.gr.jp/english/japan-anime-data

Page 2 of the 2017 Industry Report shows overseas revenue at 767 billion yen (which is approximately 33% of total industry revenue). This has been a continuously upward trend since the down year of 2009 (where it was approximately 20% of total revenue).

I agree with the notion. But it doesn't mean they won't create more western lifestyle related anime. They realized that the whole world is looking at them and one could say they already have a clear goal ahead despite what trending statistics indicate.

To be fair, I don't think the largely Western online community considers Japanese businessmen trying to cash in on the China pie to be "listening to the anime community outside of Japan."

EDIT: a phrase.

On the issue of catering to Western tastes, I don't think that will be a significant concern... As opposed to perhaps catering to Chinese tastes. From the industry report, China had the highest number of signed contracts (streaming licenses, merchandise, etc) at 335, while the US was 4th at 228. Though I don't believe the report specifies the monetary value of those contracts.

Most of this is chinese.
Americans need to stop thinking that if an anime is "different", then it is trying to appeal to americans, it isn't.

JoJo isn't, Megalobox isn't, AKIRA isn't, Fate/Zero isn't, and the list goes on...
