As many other people on this site may relate, my mother often views anime as a cartoon. Recently, I was able to get her to begrudgingly accept to watch an anime, but only on 2 conditions:

1) It must be a movie, for she is not willing to make a time commitment on a T.V. series.

2) It must be in English Dub, for she often has trouble reading subtitles.

I also have another condition of my own to add:

3) There must be at least some form of mature underlying theme present in the movie and cannot be childish/silly or cringy. I'm hoping for this movie to get her to accept that anime can be marketed towards mature audiences. The movie does not have to be rated R or even pg-13, but just needs to be able to satisfy a mature audience.

I understand that she may not end up enjoying it, and am completely fine with that. Nothing will be lost. I just might as well give it a shot. The only dub standalone movies I have seen are Spirted Away and Mononoke Hime (I need to see more). I decided Sprited Away wouldn't be for her as she might not appreciate it for what it is, but Mononoke Hime seems like a decent bet. I was also considering Wolf Children (although with the PG rating I don't know how it is for mature audiences) and Sword of the Stranger since I heard they are both really good. Any other recommendations would be appreciated.

TL:DR

I need an anime movie with a good English Dub and can satisfy a mature audience.

As a parent myself, I HIGHLY recommend https://myanimelist.net/anime/28851/Koe_no_Katachi.
Great family video with good morals. I watched it with my 22 year old brother, 11 year old daughter and 9 year old son. We were all captivated.

We watched sub, I do not know if the dubbed is voiced good or not.
Princess Mononoke is decent too, mostly because it is voiced by good actors in dub.

Yea, I was looking at that myself earlier. Unfortunately, there is no official dub nor is there even a release date for one from what I searched. A real bummer, but I'm definitely going to give it a watch on my own time at least. Thanks though!

If you're looking for something dubbed, I would say try out Sennen Joyuu (Millennium Actress), it has beautiful artwork, and is probably one of the best anime movies I've seen.

Grave of the Fireflies may be a good option! It's a realistic, historical movie about American bombings on Japan. The story revolves around a boy who tries to take care of his sister with little to no money. It's a beautiful movie but bring the tissues.

Gantz is all gore and action. Not sure if it is suitable for his mother. Also, it doesn't feel like an anime to me.

Wolf Children is a good choice. Just because it's PG doesn't mean it has no mature themes and presentation.

Ghost in the Shell
Princess Mononoke
Perfect Blue
Grave of the Fireflies
Paprika
Angel's Egg
Garden of Words
Jin-Rou
The Wind Rises
Millennium Actress

Can she read subtitles on a big screen? Take her to the theater on Oct 20! IMO, sub is the best way to go since animes are not made to be in Dub.

Wolf Children would be a good one. It has a dub. The story of a mother who has to raise her two children who can turn into wolves on her own and about the sacrifices and struggles she and her family goes through. I think most mothers would enjoy this movie though I will warn you that it can be pretty sad in some parts.

Oooooohhhh this one seems quite interesting. I really appreciate the recommendation. Definitely looks like a solid option.

I think my mother would really enjoy the realistic hardships this movie seems to have, especially with the synopsis. My only gripe is that google search tells me that many people consider the dub as "fine". If you think the dub can hold its own that it won't take away from the movie though, I'll definitely put it up there as an option!

Although my mother is not one for gore such as from Final Destination, she does enjoy shows with gore like the Walking Dead. As long as it isn't mindless gore, its definitely an option, so thanks!

What a nice list! I'm going to have to do my homework on this. Also, thanks for the heads up for Wolf Children. I just wasn't sure if the PG rating meant it can be appreciated by all ages or if it was a family movie directed for kids and the parents just come along. Definitely an option now!

Ooooooooooohhhhhhh, now this looks really enticing. I'll have to check with her, especially since she might still say no since she's never really watched movies other than in ones she understood. Really appreciate the alternative though!

Wolf Children is sounding more and more like a better option now. My mother is a sucker for stories about hardships with either burdens of a mother or children in general (her life basically revolves around children because she takes care of them in a daycare all the time). Thanks for the help.

Although I prefer the sub version, I truly don't believe the dub will take away from the movie. Had I not seen the sub before the dub, I would have been perfectly content with only watching the English dub. The voice acting was great and translation was up to par imo.

Great to hear that then, I'll certainly be giving it a look. The plot seems original and will provide plenty of feels for my mother to appreciate. Thanks!

Thanks for the list, I'll enjoy looking into these. Also the 2nd time Paprika was mentioned on here, and giving it a look it seems pretty darn nice. Looks like it has a nice psychological twist, which I'm sure my mother would enjoy.

This is the 3rd time Wolf Children was recommended, so now I definitely am finding myself leaning towards that. Although Summer Wars seems like a really good movie, it gives me the feeling that my mother would need to be introduced to anime first before being able to fully appreciate it considering the virtual world and avatars as well as the art style and character designs in the virtual world. I appreciate the help though!

she will enjoy summer wars even if she is not familiar with anime tropes so don't worry about that.

Colorful might be a good option.

Make sure you are showing her the 2010 movie, not the 1999 ecchi series.

I really like the synopsis on this one. If its a movie that ends up making my mother reflect on her own life, which is the impression I'm getting, then I'm sure she'll enjoy it. And thanks for the heads up on the 1999 ecchi series, that would've been a train wreck lol.

Mimi wo Sumaseba or "Whisper of the Heart" is really good. It's another Studio Ghibli movie, however it is a lot more realistic than most of their movies. It does have a deep message about how inspiration can come from anywhere and is a good coming of age story. Studio Ghibli movies are perfect for a family hangout tbh.

From what I've seen so far, Studio Ghibli films do seem to do pretty well with English dubs and are reliable enough for a good watch. I also don't believe she has seen a good coming of age movie for a while now, so this one may be a nice change of pace for her.

A Letter to Momo - A story about a girl who lost his father. As a result she gets to live in the countryside with her mom. At first, she doesn't seem to enjoy it but later finds a new set of odd friends who lives in the attic.

The first anime production I ever watched was Princess Mononoke. I was in my mid-fifties and was struck by its beauty and the complexity of its story. I did find the English dubs rather disconcerting since some of the actors like Billy Bob Thornton have distinctive, and distinctively non-Japanese, voices.

Millennium Actress is pretty good (never listened to the dub), but not in the same category as Mononoke Hime.

I'll add Miss Hokusai which was released last year in theaters and has an English dub. It's about Japan's most famous painter, Hokusai, and his daughter. It's a quiet but observant little piece about life in Edo and the demands of living an artistic life. I can't find the dubbed trailer, so you're left with this subtitled one:

I can't vouch for this dub either. I watched Miss Hokusai in a theater with subtitles and watched my Blu-ray copy with subs as well.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped me with this movie hunt for my mother. I have decided to go with Wolf Children since it was the most recommended, has a great dub, and has many themes that my mother will be able to relate to. If she does end up liking it so much that she will be willing to watch more, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, Paprika, Millenium Actress, Colorful, Perfect Blue, Summer Wars, Akira, A Letter to Momo, or Whisper of the Heart will all be her next solid options.

This was also the first forum I posted on MAL, so I very much appreciate the willingness everyone had to help me out.
