So Naruto has finally finished airing. (At least until Boruto starts and continues to milk the franchise like a prize-winning dairy cow).

At an amazing 500 episodes of Shippuuden and 220 in the original, with 11 movies under its belt, it's been around for quite some time.

I got into it later than most, so am still plodding along through Shippuuden, but it has been quite a journey.

What are everyones thoughts on the series as a whole?

Love it? Hate it? Too long? Too many fillers?

Guess there isn't a lot of active forum members caught up with Naruto. I chose Bleach as the one series I was willing to spend a ton of hours on. I ended up watching Gintama after it but it literally takes me years to watch anime over 100 episodes so I doubt I'll ever get to watching Naruto or One Piece.

I'd like to try HunterxHunter but I just can't get the time now I'm in the adult working lifestyle and picking up currently airing anime :(

Naruto was great while it lasted- personally prefer the manga but the anime had its merits and not all of the fillers are bad. My personal favourite 'big' one is One Piece which in my opinion blows it out of the water. The thing is, if Naruto was running for so long, they must have done something right so I don't really get the 'Naruto hate' out there.

Regarding Boruto... I just wish they would can it and let the series rest. Not saying it is bad but I think they should just stop things where they are now. :/
I say that but I will still watch it... :L

My only opinion on Naruto is that its not Bleach.

I think 700+ episodes and movies is an achievement and a testament to the quality of the show but I've never been inspired to pick it up, it would take me at least 2 years to watch it and that puts me off.

So, After 3 years we finally get an Attack on Titan season 2, while so far I haven't been disappointed with I am sad that it is only 12 episodes long, apparently due to a lack of animators at the studio.

So here's a question, Is there too much content being released recently?

This question applies to me recently pretty well. Last season was a fun experience for me overall, as it was the first where I got heavily involved in weekly airing shows. This started great as I immediately had loads of fresh content, new storylines, new characters to learn about from the 10 shows that I watched. The trouble with this came more towards the end of the season. Stories grew more complex, I got slack on keeping up with seasonals as well as I'd started and everything got a bit confusing and in the way of each other, to the extent that I didn't get the same feel out of finishing the better shows (because Lord only knows that starting a load of seasonal anime guarantees you'll watch some things that are terrible) which was a sad result to me. In turn that led to a burnout on anime completely which has kept me from wanting to watch it as much for a little while but I'm getting back in now.

The problem was an overload of content, but the important factor is how that relates to how much content is being released. With a bit of thought I reckon this was my problem and not the amount of stuff coming out. I basically had a critical failure of content management, where I struggle to get the same out of a show when I'm watching too many things at once. The seasonal culture is partly to blame since it promotes thoughts of needing to watch everything at once, but ultimately I have the option to sit back and take my time so the responsibility lies with me. On top of that there are plenty of people who enjoy watching loads of shows at once, and for them more stuff is great full stop.

The reality is that having loads of content is pro-consumer, giving customers a broader choice, more chance of finding things they'll like, and the ability to encourage competitive work from the studios that produce the content. The last of those points causes a problem though, particularly if you understand in this specific case the work culture in Japan and even more specifically how those employed in animation studios generally have the worse end of that spectrum. A competitive market enhanced by high piracy rates splits profits gained from the audience more and more between studios, threatening the financial validity of continuing to produce anime, and scraping out the wages of the creators to allow projects to continue. Studios are then encouraged by this environment to produce the highest safe profit anime, rather than continuing to explore the medium and be creative, affecting freedom of the creator, making their environment even worse and discouraging new talent.

So ultimately, having plenty of new content is great to any consumer who can handle them self and has learnt the lesson I did recently. However the corporate drive to produce more stuff given the industry's current environment is having a lot of negative impacts on the industry at the moment. There's an equilibrium to be reached, but for the moment, there's probably a bit too much coming out as the cracks are starting to show.

Wow, agree with most of that @TheRealBailey_ xD I do think more anime is a good thing, as it allows more people to find what they enjoy.

For me personally, and as you said, watching several seasonal shows at once last year meant I ended up enjoying each show so less compared to if I just focused on one at a time. That was how I had always watched anime before, and watching them all at once meant each show "got a bit confusing and in the way of each other". (as you perfectly said)

So yeah, I may take it a bit easier in the future I think.

With exclusive screenings on 19th April and further ones from the 21st, Is anyone seeing SAO: Ordinal Scale in cinemas?

I am very happy to see anime in UK cinemas, and since I am a fan of the series I have finally decided to go out of my comfort zone and check it out in public tomorrow.

I was just wondering if anyone else will be or, if they are still interested, just waiting for it to be released online?

I find it awkward to go to the cinema on my own tbh, and sadly i know no one IRL that I could convince to come with me. :(

As for anime movies being shown in UK Cinemas, I am happy to see that. It shows that anime itself is becoming more accepted here in the west.

(And yes I quite like SAO, it was one of the first ones I saw. I don't think it is amazing, but it doesnt deserve the hate it gets, there are far worse shows out there)

I'm still working my way through SAO so I won't be in time to watch it in theatres but I seen it was making substantial money in Japan so all the better for getting more anime releases in UK Cinemas.

@Renn It sure is a little awkward going to cinema alone but I'm in the same boat, not many people are free when I am or want to see the film I do. I don't mind going on the last few days of a showing though and enjoying a film with a few other random people. I usually just get a seat at the back if it's free, put my feet up and enjoy the film.

I had a pretty detailed discussion with @Wood94 about it but I will say it here too.
I eventually gave the film a 6, because I felt like it wasn't great, but unlike parts of the show I certainly don't think its bad either. I have a problem with things being predictable in anime and could predict what was going to happen very easily and that's a massive turnoff for me. However while predictable, I found the relationship between Asuna and Kirito to feel more real than the actual series, animation was again on point, soundtrack when Yuki Kaijura is involved is always perfect. Was never really a fan of most of the side characters and found them a bit irritating, I also had a problem with (inserting into a spoiler tag just incase)

Unlike alot who just mindlessly hate it because its the fad thing to I can still give it a fair chance and give credit where its due, not great but not terrible either.

@Unused-username1 - It won't ever be tbh, it's too polarizing and it will be naturally hated by people because it's SAO. Not much can be changed about that.
In regards to taking risk, that in particular is a plot point that the ending is predictable so I disagree its taking a risk and more just something placed in to extend the lifespan of the film.

@RychesShadows that's fair enough. I think its a problem most stories have though risk is needed for any good action anything but you expect the protagonist to win in the end so it often doesn't work. Case and point SAO. Can you recommend any truly unpredictable anime?

Relating to SAO:OS, I loved it when i watched it in the theater. I loved the fact that kirito wasn't op because for the best part it took place irl. I would say more but i don't know how to add a spoiler section.

Going back to the Naruto discussion, although i think it is a great series and some movies are very much worth watching, saying that it has to have been good to run for such a time isn't particularly correct. I didn't like how they dragged out the ending and there was so much filler in both series that at some level took away from the series as a whole. Although the filler in the OG series was better in my opinion and watchable, i swear the filler we got in shippuden was because the animators had a quota to stretch it to 500 episodes. However some of what would be considered filler wasn't, such as some of what i call the "prequel episodes" were some of the best ones (bar the minor changes to some which made my blood boil). Though some of the filler could have been said to give slight more depth to the characters, it detracted from the running storyline and was in my opinion, mostly a waste if time. Hey ho though, that's just my opinion though, i still rated it an 8 anyway in i have hope for the boruto series from what I've seen so far, it's going reasonably well, sorry for the long post (^-^)

@RychesShadows I definitely appreciate the psychological/mystery genre for having moments like that... although 'unpredictable' can be subjective especially if you've watched a huge number of series. There is only so much directions a story can get from start to finish.

Occultic;Nine was a bad example of this for me recently. Similar plot devices to the mystery genre and unpredictable moments but it was executed poorly from a storytelling point of view so I didn't find it captivating.

Then shows like Hyouka and Gosick have relatively predictable plots (Higurashi as well after the first half of season 1) but they make up for it with animation quality/ characters / atmosphere or whatever.

Then you have shows like Haruhi which just have a nice combination of everything and leave you wishing for a third season (KyoAni pls) or Kara no Kyoukai which is just miles apart from most other anime in every aspect in the thriller anime genre.

I've just gotten to the stage where I try to enjoy a series for what it is (TV/anime/movies all included) but like I say, it's pretty much subjective as to what you personally find enjoyable.

Also, if anyone is looking unpredictable/psychological shows outside of anime I would recommend the Legion TV show. 8 episodes long but pretty mind-melting superhero show.

@PearDrops My outlook is exactly the same. For example: Having watched far too many romance anime, they are all reasonably predictable but it's the journey and characters that I end up loving the show for. Unpredictability is certainly something I enjoy, but it's not everything for me.

Your Hyouka and Gosick examples btw perfectly summed up how I feel about this too.

And again, totally agree. I don't watch shows critically; If I enjoyed a show, that's all that matters to me. Well said xD

Hey guys, i have a question for you; what anime would you consider "mainstream" that also has a sizable group that dislikes/hates that series? My thoughts are along the lines of what other anime's are thought of the same way SAO is?

Hmmm, I mean everyone has different likes and dislikes. But i cant think of any of the top of my head as divisive as SAO is.

I guess the big 3, Naruto, Bleach and One Piece, have generally mixed opinions. But thats mainly due to their length more than anything really. Any anime that long is generally dragged out -and have lots of filler- which does result in flaws, plot holes etc occuring. But i wouldn't say they are as disliked as SAO is by some, but again its all very subjective and really down to the individual person.

Also, it really bothers me when someone hates on a series just because its "mainstream". No anime is perfect after all. If someone genuinely dislikes a show, then fair enough, there are plenty of other anime out there of various genres. But going into a show, hating it because its popular is just very immature.

Also I'm somewhat of an anomaly when it comes to SAO (right @RychesShadows ) in that i don't love nor hate the show. It had some serious flaws, but i did find it an enjoyable enough watch.

Yes you are (not that that's a bad thing as I've already said)

@gokhan13 - In regards to mainstream anime being hated. I think if we are going minority, every single mainstream anime is hated by some portion of the anime community because well...just because its popular really, just the way it works unfortunately.

Tokyo Ghoul deviates from the manga so damn much its unreal (though i did see the anime first, and i did enjoy it a lot for what was in it)

And AoT is also quite mixed, personally I loved the heck out of it. But i know other peoples opinions differ on that. I feel with a lot of mainstream shows, its not necesarily the show itself that people have a problem with. Its more the fanbase that overhype every thing thats halfway decent.

Hmm, didn't think they'd be disliked so much. I mean i can get where it's coming from, i don't like anime to deviate from source material, though in some cases it can't be helped and in some cases it's just as good. The only bad thing i can think of for TG is that it stopped and it needed more. P.s. i can't be the only one who liked the original blue exorcist ending...

Like Renn said, Tokyo Ghoul got the 'hate' mostly due to the Root A (second season) where it deviated pretty significantly from the manga. I personally loved the first season and thought the second season was okay, but I do enjoy the manga so I can see a little where the disappointment lies.

Regarding AoT, I remember the conventions for like 2 years after it aired were full of Attack on Titan cosplay and merch. Like the others said it can happen with any anime but I think popular anime get so much coverage online/IRL that people get fed up with it and can't help complain about it.

It's interesting to me how the moe/slice of life hate seems to have taken a reverse turn to some degree. I recall it being hated on vehemently by anime communities but recently it seems to have become more acceptable as far as I can tell.

Still seems a little early to me for looking at the Summer shows, but here's my quick rundown.

Looking through and the only show I'm really exited for is Owarimonogatari Season 2. As for everything else:
*cracks knuckles*
Don't care about New Game, Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu might be alright, but I'm not holding my breath, I'm not gonna watch Fate/Apocrypha because in my head I'll be comparing it to Zero and UBW, and I'll get disappointed (it doesn't look that good anyway). Hajimete no Gal looks like High-Def hentai, so I don't care. I've heard a lot about Ballroom e Youkoso and it looks like one of the better shows coming up, so I'm exited. Netsuzou TRap looks meh, I don't care about Hell Girl, Kakegurui looks boring but I'll try it out anyway (looks like one of those guilty pleasure shows).
Koi to Uso looks ugly as hell, and I don't want to watch it, but I'll try at least one episode. Don't care about the smartphone harem, Dive!! might be alright, but I won't hold my breath (pun intended). Jikan no Shihaisha, don't care. Tsurezure Children, don't care. Saiyuuki Reload Blast, don't care. Isekai Shokudou actually does interest me. I'm a huge fan of tucked away little cafes, and that synopsis sounds right up my alley.

Past this point there isn't that much to speak about. A SoL about a centaur, Captain Levi as a footballer, Quiz Wars, a shit rip-off of K-ON! and some catholic priests dicking around.

I know I'm cynical at the best of times, but this season genuinely looks like crap to me, besides three or four shows. However, I promise I'll watch the first episode of every show I mentioned here (except Apocrypha. Apocrypha can fuck off)

Netsuzou Trap - Because melodramatic Shouju ai

Koi to Uso - Because melodramic romance.... with a twist.

Tsurezure Children - Because SoL featuring drama and romance.

Hitorijime - Because shounen-ai.

Centaur no Nayami - Because kawaii monster girls.

Clione no Akari - Don't know why really; the syopsis does intrigue me though.

There are a few more too, but these are the main ones for me.

Ballroom e Youkoso is a pretty standard but well-executed shounen, don't let the fact it's about ballroom dancing put you off. Production I.G are animating and the same character designer as Haikyuu!! which is why it has that look to it. I'm not sure how the actual scenes are going to look given the artwork in the manga.

Centaur no Nayami I've heard some questionable things about (creepy sexualization of kindergartners in particular). I'm not sure if the anime will go into the social commentary aspects that I've read about.

Made in Abyss has an interesting setting and world building from the chapters I've read, but I don't like the overly loli look (them also being nude at times is a no, no) and the jokes and other things that have come with that. It has a risk of going into overly dark and brutalisation of lolis for the sake of it territory.

Mahoujin Guru Guru - I've watched the anime from the early 90s and read what little chapters of the manga were translated. If you like JRPGs like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy then you might get a kick out of it since it's basically a parody of those. I'm not a fan of the new animation style/artwork, I preferred the warm cell look but oh well that's just my preference.

Netsuzou Trap -NTR Yeah... have fun with this one. It goes into borderline hentai area with infidelity and other wonderful things, you can imagine from NTR bring in the title anyway.

The Reflection - Studio DEEN is a turn-off, but they've been better lately. The director has been involved with some interesting stuff and the original creator is Stan Lee although I've heard the anime adaptations of Iron Man, X-Men, etc aren't very good. If you like superheroes though then have at it. The PV looks decent imo.

Shoukoku no Altair has potential. I've heard excellent things about the manga particuarly with its world building, politics and cultural aspects. I took a look at the PV and it looks good.

That being said I'm over watching seasonals, if I even bother with anything it'll be after they've done airing.

I recently started Durarara (Rarararararararara) and couldn't help but notice a certain Wolf Girl making an appearance, Holo from Spice and Wolf. Another recent anime I saw, Sankarea, even had a Shaun of the dead reference.

Yeah, I loved that Sankarea scene. Shaun of the Dead is fantastic but I didn't expect to see a reference in that anime.

The most recent one I can remember off the top of my head is the Mad Max episode in Flip Flappers
https://youtu.be/9QvK05fyBYw?t=3m28s (I loved that anime)

Pretty sure there are tons of others but my favourite reference of all time is the Jackie Chan episode of Gintama. I'm a huge Jackie Chan fan, especially of his older 80s/90s movies and this episode was possibly one of the greatest parodies I've seen. Some of the scenes are almost identical to his classic scenes...

My most recent favourite has to be this scene from episode 13 of 3-Gatsu no Lion which (when I first watched) I didn't know was a parody.

There's also that one episode of Akiba's Trip the Animation which entirely dedicated to a Yu Gi Oh parody. It's not exactly hidden, but it's too funny to leave out.

Finally, this little gem from Robotics;Notes:
