Getchu's 2016 ranking is out, and to no one's surprise, Senren Banka destroyed all of the competition. Train loli at 2nd.

http://www.getchu.com/pc/2016_g_ranking/

Overall:

1. Senren Banka

2. Maitetsu

3. Sen no Hatou, Tsukisome no Kouki

4. Amatsutsumi

5. Re: LieF

6. Giniro Haruka

7. Baldr Heart

8. Nora to Oujo to Noraneko Heart

9. Otome Domain

10. Sengoku † Koihime ~Otome Kenran ☆ Sengoku Emaki~

Great list this year, loved all of them except Sengoku and Baldr which I didn't play. My top 3 of Maitetsu, Senren Banka and Giniro Haruka are there which makes me very happy.

Best VN Girls of 2016:

1. Asuka Minato (Otome Domain) - This is a boy by the way

2. Tomotake Yoshino (Senren Banka)

3. Hachiroku (Maitetsu)

4. Murasame (Senren Banka)

5. Miyaguni Akari (Sen no Hatou)

6. Bethly (Giniro Haruka)

7. Hitachi Mako (Senren Banka)

8. Ookura Resona (Otome Riron)

9. Tokisaka Nanao (Floral Flowlove)

10. Ai (Re: LieF)

They're games made in Japan by Japanese developers, of course it'd be in the Japanese language. They're also games made by official companies, none of them are doujin or indie.

This illustrates pretty well why I haven't read any VNs in a long time.

If it's not drivel constructed entirely for the sake of cardboard cutout girls (Princess Evangile, for example) it's usually some garbage fantasy or sci-fi (or even worse, a hybrid) setting with zero suspension of disbelief and lots of asspulls anyway.

Gone are the Grisaias, Cross Channels, Air etc.

Like that Baldr Heart thing looks like it was entirely made to make me roll my eyes ALL the way back into my head.

They're stuck now, send help

Edit: If my Heart Had Wings was... semi-passable. Last VN I read.

It's made by the same developers as the girl in your avatar, Natsuha from Monobeno.

Monobeno and Maitetsu both contains loli and incest, but Monobeno is blood related incest as Natsuha is the protagonist's biological sister, Maitetsu is adoptive siblings incest. But Hachiroku, the girl on the list, is not related to the protagonist.

It's more to do with the target audience. They're targeted at single working Japanese men and college students. They're filled with cute girls and light story because it make you feel at peace, relieve the huge amounts of stress Japanese men tend to have. They are single because of either of the 3 reasons, social awkwardness towards girls, no time to have a relationship, not enough income to start a family. Eroge is what they do as their hobby. Sometimes the developers hire a good writer to write a good story, but its mostly moege and charage that the Japanese like.

Ohhh fuck, I thought you were talking about my profile avatar, not my forum avatar, well either way, she's cute and I don't care... I just find it in some random website anyway.

Probably never. Giniro Haruka is extremely long, you're talking about 100 hours. Because each heroine's route take at least 20 hours. Compare to that, an average eroge is around 25-40 hours in length. But it could have to do with my reading speed, I'm not fluent so there's that.

The length is due to the fact that the relationship between a heroine and the protagonist starts in middle school, goes into high school, college and adult life. Effectively 4 parts with college and adult life in the same part. The game is officially divided into 3 parts each route, Middle School part, High School part and After part. It ends with marriage and kids.

Because the relationship in the story is in a span of a wide period of time, there are quite a lot of H scenes, around 10 per heroine so 50ish in total.

People still loving them traps. Otome Domain was a bit too...overly silly and perverted for my tastes though. Love his voice actress though.

To me Maitetsu was rated highly more for its visual achievement. It's actually an insanely boring game unfortunately. Hachiroku is a decent character enough but she isn't enough to carry that game.

You see, this is what's wrong with the western eroge fanbase. They care too much about story when eroge aren't supposed to be story deep at all. It's not literature. Japanese love these types of eroge not for the story but for the characters. They love cute characters so they don't find these type of eroge boring, while western fanbase is like the polar opposite.

Shit, I am not learning Nihongo just for this. But the main girl though..... I might consider it as an option.

In any case, thanks for the info. I think I will put this under my VN wishlist.

Oh trust me I know. I'm saying even for a charage it wasn't very good. This is because the characters as a group really didn't have much chemistry with one another and it was just very very slow (and plus Soutetsu was just kind of a boring MC).

I enjoyed Amakano Second Season (though that was a game from last year). And other than that I played Kuroneko which was alright but felt a bit rushed.

I am kind of tired of charages at this point though after so many so my perception is a bit skewed.

Yeah this is very noticeable on VNDB, before a Japanese VN gets an English translation it can have a score of 8.5 or higher then immediately drop like a rock once the English audience gets it. Previously mentioned Princess Evangile was at one point above 8, wouldja believe

My two favourite visual novels from 2016 are not on the list.
Which is to be expected since they are a psychological and a philosphical story.
To make it worse they have no 'heroines' to capture and no porn.
So they will never be all that popular in the visual novel fandom but I still want to mention them here since I think they're really good.

Seabed which recently got a translation announced. (english trailer)
