I'm glad more men in Japan are seeing the light and want idols to be happy.

Source

Hopefully a survey for the ladies will be released but I can see that ending in similar results. There is one small catch though, it surveyed primarily normal Japanese men and not idol fans, but in the grand scheme of things, this is good news because if a law outlawing these horrific contracts was to be voted on in the Diet, the normal folk would be ones for the laws banning it and some of the fans which are fewer in number would be against it.

Awesome

Now let's just hope they'll actually try to do something about it

Well not sure why they would survey women, I mean that isn't the target demographic of Idols.

Although a more meaningful survey would be the opinion of those who would be considered "idol fans", since that would be the group that affects their profits. It's kind of the same as when everyone gets up and arms about video game companies doing this or that to appease "SJW's" - One of the first points always brought up is "They don't even play video games", and it really isn't wrong to bring this up either.

Then again, idols sound just as toxic as things like boy bands, so I really couldn't care what happens to them.

Idol culture is still a lame form of celebrity worship either way but that's an improvement I guess.

It's hard to believe that this is even a thing. The fans get jealous or what? lol

What's a purity clause?

Idols can't have relationships or something?

Who's coming up with this stuff?

That's great news, hopefully it will have consequences.

I think there should be a collective effort on both the fans and the producers' side to make a clear distinction between idols as fictional characters, and their real-life counterparts. We all know that the idol persona is fake, but the actress is still forced to present it as real, even outside of her public performances. It's as if wrestling stars had to act like larger-than-life caricatures even in their daily lives.

Just why would you restrict their love life? The Japanese government just has to say "fuck you" to these idol companies and give idols more freedom

Either way, the obsessed fans aren't going to be in a relationship with these idols

A contract that restricts idols and sometimes non-idol seiyuu from dating, getting married, r having sex.

But are those 74.3% paying customers? As the article rightfully points out, the poll (with a minuscule sample), doesn't try to identify idol fans, let alone the ones who would buy hundred or thousands of copies of a single, nor whether they would vote with their wallet even if they were casual fans. Let's just say that an idol studio, seeing an internet poll with 150 males (74.3% of 202) against the purity clause, isn't going to hold an emergency meeting if the CDs, tickets and merchandise are still being bought by the truck loads.

Actually Male Idols are bigger than female idols in terms of market size in Japan and probably fanbase in general too.
If you say just "idols",it is about both male/female idols in Japan.

Among oricon top 30 artists by CD+DVD/BD sales,10 are male idols and 6 are female idols.

1 14,328.0 嵐
2 11,290.8 AKB48
4 5,777.3 Kis-My-Ft2
5 5,470.7 関ジャニ∞
6 4,492.1 乃木坂46
8 3,148.5 μ’s
10 2,886.6 東方神起
15 2,256.4 ももいろクローバーZ
16 2,253.3 SMAP
18 2,235.7 Hey!Say!JUMP

Terrific news. The fact that there's an official "contract" for this sort of thing only makes it all the more heinous.

I guess I can see why companies would do that, but it's still a dick move to hinder someone's unprofessional life because their job doesn't see it as favorable.
