I consider Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (MSMM) to be a pioneer of a completely new genre in itself. What I mean is, a setting that looks cutesy and rainbows and unicorns and pink stuff and cute little girls going about their daily lives but BAM, DESPAIR EVERYWHERE. I want something like that- a completely deceiving anime where you think it's going to be one thing, but it turns out to be deeper than what it seems.

So far, I've looked at recommendations on the internet and I've watched Genei wo Kakeru Taiyou (it was okay, but tried too hard), Alien 9 (NO), Gakkougurashi! (It was good, but a couple of major flaws prevented it from being comparable to MSMM) and Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru (... I am laughing at the concept so far but maybe it will be better). I am in the process of watching Coppelion (which I will in the upcoming holidays).

So. Any recommendations from you guys?

I have not yet, but it's been in my plan to watch list. Is it any good? Because I've been kind of iffy about it based on the reviews.

Well if you want a decent Madoka Magica-like anime, it's a pretty safe bet. I've seen both seasons of Wixoss and Madoka Magica is one of my favorite anime too.
The ending of Wixoss leaves some questions unanswered, but there's also a movie that still needs to be translated and a third season already planned.

Glass no Hana to Kowasu Sekai

Shares a very similar abstract art style to Madoka, have themes of desperation to save someone, and have young girls in an occupation forced to do things that are in the moral grey area.
