GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka
| I had a discussion on another forum and, after drawing a blank, I'm hoping someone on here can shed some light on the confusining matter of the age of the class four kids. Kunio's mom is 27 at the start of the story. She had Kunio at 13. That makes him 14 at the start. Only 7 months pass from start to finish during the GTO story. Kunio's mom is still said to be 27 in the 24th volume, with 6 months having passed. At the start of the story, the characters are said to be 14. I'm pretty Urumi called Miyabi a 14 year old virgin, but if she didn't then I'm 99% sure someone referred to her, or someone else in the class as being 14 at some point. But later, towards the end, Miyabi is said to be 16 on numerous occasions. I'm also pretty sure that near the start Onizuka was unhappy teaching the class he got because they were too young for him. If they were 14, that would've made sense, but not so much if they were 16. Likewise, how Anko commented that the girls had transformed into women after the summer holiday made little sense if the characters were 16 at that stage. You'd assume talk like that would be coming out of youngers characters mouths; not girls who are over the age of consent even in the UK! Adding to the confusion is the class number. Class four are constantly referred to as 2-4 (year two, class four - hence sophomores) but the sign above the class door says 3-4. Something must've gotten lost in translation there. ...In short, I'm at a complete loss when it comes to the ages of the characters. Going on the Kunio/his mom age difference and the fact the kids are said to be 14 at first, I can only assume Tokyopop upgraded the ages from 14-16 because they didn't think it right for 14 year olds to flash panties and boobs, as well as being shown in sexual situations. Anyone know better than me? |
