Isn't this data similar to the other thread? It is ranking manga series in terms of the number of copies "in circulation", but not the number of copies "sold". Sorry I have to get into the technicalities, but DanMachi's sales is a prime example of how much actual sales can differ from circulation or printed copies.

Those are worldwide sales, this is just Japan. If these are print statistics, then I don't know any site, that listed the actual sales figures of total volume sales. Actual sales figures seem to be only yearly.

I think using DanMachi's as a prime example of the difference between sale figures and print number, to not be good enough, to dismiss print statistics. Those with the highest print statistics, have the highest sales, from what I can see, be it in Japan, France or the US. That big of a difference is probably only in small starting series like DanMachi, not the long ones like Naruto, DB, etc.

I'm not saying to completely dismiss the printing run numbers or circulation numbers, but to say they are the "actual sales" is not appropriate. The printing runs do not represent the actual sales numbers, only the absolute upper bound.

You calling them sales is what I have a problem with. These numbers should not be taken as actual sales, but as a representation of the cumulative number of volume copies the publisher expected these manga series to sell. You mention the long running ones, which are obviously very well stocked. Manga Series where publishers are more stingy with printing numbers will be much closer to the actual sales, as it is possible the long running series has had millions of copies of older volumes sitting there in stock and eventually returned.

If you take the sales figures from the yearly rankings you get 146,032,226 sales for One Piece in total from '98 to '00 plus '08-14.
There's 7 years missing there, but sales increased by >100% both '08-'09 and '09-'10. Sales in 2000 were 871k and in 2008 they were a little under 6 million. Based on these two things, and the fact that the anime bean airing during 2000, an average sales per year of about 2-3 million in the missing years seem reasonable (unless you have some reason to believe that there would have been far more and that the sales then slumped in 2008 before suddenly skyrocketing again - it would need to be a damn good reason though as the rankings don't imply this happened at all).
If you apply this average to these missing years you get a total figure of between 160 and 167 million sales - or barely half the total reported in the OP.

Obviously part of this would be sales that Oricon doesn't report, but every other series has this factor as well.
There is no such thing as shit taste. Only idiots who think everyone should have the same taste as they do.
