| My top pick would be Saiunkoku Monogatari. It's set in a fantasy empire that looks like T'ang China (600-900 CE). The heroine wants to become her country's first female imperial official. It has romance, drama, comedy, and a bit of action. Chihayafuru is officially josei, and it is about high-school karuta teams. That said you should watch it anyway; it's an excellent series. Kamisama Hajimemashita is a lot of fun. The main girl is in high school, but most of the story is focused elsewhere. It is a romance, but that's not the only theme. Mahou Shoujotai Arusu ("Tweeny Witches") is a beautifully illustrated and intriguing story about a young girl who falls into a magical world. Windy Tales might be another option. A lot of shows with younger female characters but not dealing with high school romance are often seinen. Good examples are Nijuu Mensou no Musume, Shion no Ou, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. There are, of course, the myriad variety of magical girl shows like Sailor Moon. |

| I'll just put the shoujo's I have on my list here then, since your list doesn't tell much :) Fruits Basket (It appears to be some shallow reverse harem thing but it's really not, every characters has so much backstory and depth, though the mc is a tad bit annoying) Donten ni Warau (has more action to it but definitely shoujo, it has some character development for the characters you'd least expect it and plot twists that'll probably make you cry, I did) Karneval (Bright colors and a decent soundtrakc with the most amazing drawn characters, the story doesn't go very far but I liked it nonetheless) |

Kodomo no Omocha (some romance later in the series) Sailor Moon Crystal (some romance) Fushigi Yugi (some romance) Fruits Basket (the MC is a high schooler, but show is not really about her school life) |
