It is ok to not like a character, it just seems like you said "over-the-top" when the reaction is so scathing.
I personally like Lemrina quite a bit. I don't think she is whiny at all. She has probably lived a sad life, not only disabled, but also in the shadow of her sister with no one actually caring about her. Now, the one time when people need her, most of them probably still don't actually give a shit about her, they only want her Aldnoah. Realizing this, she's about to make a move for the betterment of her own life, to try and claim something for herself as a person, and not as an object or tool.
If the things she wants come at the expense of Asseylum, it probably doesn't bother her that much. It doesn't seem like she regards Asseylum very highly. Either she thinks Asseylum is just another part of the royal family that scorns/overshadows her, or maybe Asseylum never even knew her, in which case they have no bond to each other.
From her view, this is likely the perfect storm, the only chance she'll ever have to become something other than a forgotten tool that no one cares about. It'll be interesting to see what she does with it.
Oh, I get your view point. As I said, she's a pretty damn good character for the villain role in a mental sense. Her tragic story of being someone's shadow, or even lower than that and to finally have a claim in this mess of world.
However, this does not justify her actions. In order for her to accomplish her goal, she'll need to manipulate and crush obstacles and people along the way.
I think your view point is entirely different from my view point. The way I see it, Lemrina's not trying to be her OWN person. There's a huge difference between wanting to be recognized as your own and trying to impersonate somebody else. She specifically stated that she would try to rob Asseylum of everything she had owned. From that context, it's not that she wants to be her own person, it's more subconsciously claiming that she wanted to "become" her sister, and live the life Asseylum had.
So it's not that she wants a place, she wants revenge. If you look closely at her actions, it foreshadows her true intentions of trying to replace her sister. For example, the "can you teach me about earth, Slaine", and the " I wanna explore places" is pretty much like Seylum. I get the feeling that Lemrina has been watching & envying her sister amidst the shadows of the castles. The "I wanna be my own person" thing honestly is just an act. She uses that as an excuse, so that no one will uncover what she really wants and I think that's pretty darn human and downright cruel.
