Violent sexism?

I noticed this even with the first season... commenters on various episodes (not on this site, but I assume the same use both) attack the female protagonists (the hypocrisy being that they don't focus on Akane in S2, but they did when she was a newbie in their eyes too) by being antagonistic to females in general, ending their comment with a desire for violence... they usually have several upvotes too.

Needless to say the anime itself doesn't have a shred of sexism AFAIK... just a lot of angry male watchers, I guess.

Sigh.

Do you mean that commenters were angry that a female protagonist played such a huge role in the story?

Usually due to perceived incompetence. Akane was widely seen as being useless in the very first episode... but by the end those who desired violence against her certainly took note of her character's progression.

You're always gonna get angry people who have no idea what they're talking about.
In S1--at least at the beginning--Akane was a new Inspector so that's why she seemed "incompetent". She wasn't really incompetent, but lacked confidence in herself, was rather naive, lacked experience, and was never given a chance to shine by her superiors. Towards the end of S1, you can see that's she become much more competent due to being in charge of Division 1 and having accrued more experience.

In S2, she is very competent overall.
