Question for the group, do you take the length of a drama into concideration when choosing to watch it?

Hmm, yes, sometimes. I tend to avoid those historical or morning Jdramas with a million episodes. However, when it comes to your average trendy Jdrama or Kdrama, I don't really look because they are all usually either 10-12 episodes for Jdrama or 16-21episodes for Kdrama. I did make it through the 40-episode Kdrama Glass Slipper though, and the fact that Bliss (aka Happiness) is also that long is not scaring me away just yet. But in general, I don't usually look at series length.

You see, I am trying to avoid more work for myself, but the more I think about it the more I am leaning towards a drama length feature. I wouldn't focus on actual episode lengths, but a span of episodes, like 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 30-50, 51-100, 101+, just so its easier to narrow and search.

But I am getting a little too detailed and ahead of myself.

Anyone else?

I don't really consider them so much. Just as long as the plot is good enough without being draggy, it doesn't matter if it's a little long. Still, I prefer dramas which have lengths about 8 to 20 episodes though. Tends to be less boring.

Yes, that's the main reason why no matter how much I try I can never finish a drama with 100+ episodes. Jdramas are short and sweet which is I think a huge part of the appeal.

I don't mind long drama, if it has a great plot and well thought-out. I have watched dramas that is over 100 episodes before. However, it is from my experience that there are not many long dramas that are interesting to watch, since many of them tend to drag. So I still look for dramas that is less than 26 episodes.

hmm... i prefer short and sweet but i think the koreans do a pretty good job with long dramas. ive not tried anything over 25eps as far as i know though, but if it was highly recommended i would at least give it a shot.

I don't care about the length. As long as it's not insanely long (i.e. more than 26 45-minute episodes), I'm willing to watch it. Most of the dramas that I've watched so far are in the range of 10-13 45-minute episodes, though.

It's kind of weird how my attention span has changed since I started watching Asian dramas. I have a hard time getting into American shows now, because they go for 22, 40 minute episodes per year, and will run for several seasons when the ratings are good. There used to be older shows I was interested in watching (Like Big Love and Babylon 5, both which I started watching), but since my time spent watching Asian dramas has increased, so has my interest in those series waned.

I find I prefer the plot resolution in Asian dramas. I mean, all too often a favorite American series has been canceled after only a few episodes, or a single season, and it leaves off on a cliffhanger never to be resolved. Surface, Miracles, Peter Benchley's Amazon, Pushing Daisies (though it did get a second season)... While the Asian dramas we watch comprise one complete story. Sometimes there are sequels, but the first series can always be watched without continuing any further.

So I guess with my shortened attention span I have a hard time watching dramas longer than 16 episodes. Unless it's REALLY good in the latter half of the series, I get bored easily. For example, I stopped on Churasan at episode 61 (equal to apprx. 20 regular jdrama episodes, as they are shy of 15 minutes long). I'm finding it hard to finish Beethoven Virus as well, because it's just a bit too long. The longest Asian drama I have watched so far was Gourmet at 24 episodes. But it kept getting better as the series wore on! I could even watch a sequel. XD

Anyways, these days length does have a bearing on what I watch. Sometimes I don't mind an extra-long drama or movie, but in general I go for the shorter ones.

I also look at length. I tend to be able to watch jdramas because they are only 11 45 minute episodes. I mean, in comparison to anime thats a long time but jdrama episodes are usually set up so that they keep my attention span the whole way through, making it easier to watch 11 episodes of them. It's even easy to watch them weekly because the episodes are long enough that i remember what happened, and the series isnt too long that i forget to follow it weekly.

Kdramas.... are long for me. Coffee prince and Samsoon were the only ones i've managed to finish pretty quickly. 60 minutes is such a huge time commitment for an episode, and ontop of that i've noticed that kdrama episodes drag in the middle , but start/end on suspenseful notes. so around halfway through an ep i tend to get really bored.

I have trouble sitting down and watching stuff that is more than a 46~50 minute commitment. Which is why i have trouble watching movies & kdramas.

Short ftw :)

For me it's more like I watch less anime because I'm so focused on watching dramas. XD
