Mature, serious, contains action or a brilliant plot.
These are the requirements for me to fully enjoy an anime series. It is also fantastic when there are interesting characters, each with their own motives and ideals. Dark athmosphere and fresh animation much appreciated.
Best examples:
Fate/Zero
Shingeki no Kyojin
Death Note
Psycho-Pass
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (except, it's got a lot of useless comedy scenes)
Ergo Proxy
Mirai Nikki
Phantom
Please check out the rest on my list, there's only 39 of them :)

If anyone of you fellows knows any series that fit these cryteria and is so kind to share, I'll be grateful

Thanks for the post, forgot to add DtB on my list. Was good.

I dropped Code Geass, because the art was just too bad. (and I watched Shiki!)

Baccano! It has a bunch of interesting characters and cleverly weaves in and out of the past to build its storyline.

Although it is the same creator as Durarara which I see you dropped right before it got interesting. Durarara's first episodes pretty much introduced the characters and is slow. I would recommend going at least to episode 12 (unless it was just so unbearable, then nevermind).

Both animes are pretty much the same thing. In fact, I tried to watch both of those, but it didn't seem like my kind of anime. If so many people love it, maybe it is time to give it a second try...

+1 Code Geass
-Amazing anime and the animation really isn't that bad, I found it to be pretty good throughout the whole show actually and it's one of the best anime ever made.

Cowboy Bepop
Trigun
-All time classics. Watch them now. Bepop has the same makers as Samurai Champloo which you enjoyed but most consider Bepop to be much better(although I'm a Champloo fan myself)

+1 Durarara!!
+1 Baccano!
-Both take awhile to heat up since there are so many characters but it's worth it. Also, Durarara!! is getting a 2nd season soon.

I can walk on people.
So I am 79% Jesus.

Both of them start to pay off in the 2nd half, once you know the characters and their motivations a bit.

Think of these two anime as stories where everyone is the main character.

I think you should watch Moribito since it's waiting there on your list. Mouryou no Hako is a good show, too, but not up to the Moribito standard.

Here's some other options not on your list

These have historical settings:
Oh! Edo Rocket - political repression in the Meiji period with a wacky sci-fi plot; on Hulu

House of Five Leaves - ronin joins small band of kidnappers; great voice acting; on YouTube

Hyouge Mono - follows a "warrior-esthete" as he navigates through the political maelstrom created by the assassination of Nobunaga; fansubs

Twelve Kingdoms - a whiny high-school girl is whisked off to a fantasy kingdom where she discovers her true fate; a classic

"Bake Neko" and its sequel Mononoke - a medicine seller travels Japan and slays demons; a beautifully-illustrated show with complex dark stories.

More modern settings:

Bartender - A mysterious bartender always selects just the right alcoholic concoction to soothe a patron's troubled soul. An uncommon show where many of the characters are well over forty and even older. Try Youtube.

Dennou Coil - A story about 10-yo kids who wear special glasses that enable them to interact with a virtual world. One of the best anime of the past decade, and one that everyone should try. Fansubs.

Welcome to the NHK! - A dark psychological comedy about Japanese social isolates. Hulu.

You only list twelve episodes of Black Lagoon. Believe me that the Second Barrage is much better than the first season. The opening and closing arcs of the second season are the best strories of the entire series.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica - At least try out the first 3 episodes. The art is kinda special, and it's probably not appreciated by everyone, but it's a really good show. Definitely recommended.
