The university I’m attending seems to think that handing out rape whistles is the best solution to stopping a string of unsolved sexual assaults that have been taking place on campus all semester. Perhaps they are trying this new tactic because the administrative emails telling us to be very, very afraid, not to go out alone at night, and to be more careful (uh-huh) seem to not be working to stop a real-life rapist from preying on women in a methodical and calculated way (whodathunkit?).

I can’t find any evidence that rape whistles do shit, and I certainly can’t get excited about an anti-rape method premised on the idea that rape happens, but maybe if you’re lucky, some hero will come and rescue you.

But it’s pink. For the ladies. So that’s exciting. Am I right or am I right?

An official university email cautions s that “now is not the time to give into anxiety” because ladies = hysteria, presumably. So, instead of giving into my feminine urges, I came up with a list of a few things we could do with our pink rape whistles, as I do not for one minute think mine will be keeping me safe from being raped on campus.

1. Lead a cheer squad (Two-four-six-eight, whistles do not address rape! Pink whistles make us see red, can’t we address rape culture instead?)

2. Whistle loudly to attract a pack of small, fashionable dogs with jewel-encrusted collars who can protect you on campus .

3. Diddle your clit.

4. Perform a party trick whereby one blows the whistle with the wind from one’s own farts.

5. Bedazzle the shit out of that thing for a whistle-themed fashion show (in the style of “sexualize breast cancer” campaigns).

6. Coordinate all outfits and nail polish going forward, as any pink-minded individual would. Rape on campus is not just going to go away with a few toots on a whistle, so this is the new approach to ending sexual assault we will be wearing our whistles forever.

7. Master the whistle as a new instrument and attract a protector/spouse through your skillful playing. Like the use of the pianoforte in a Jane Austen novel.

8. Ask oneself how a rape whistle is supposed to do anything in the case of all of the other kinds of sexual assault that happen on campus all of the time that don’t include a stranger at night in the bushes. No, wait. Look at the pretty pink colour and think about that instead.

9. Blow the whistle so hard that you are transported to an alternate universe where women are not expected to be solely responsible for not getting raped, and instead, men are expected to not be rapists.

10. Blow your whistle until you pass out and bump your head hard enough to take the rest of the semester off.

Suggestions, anyone?

Wait rape isn't acceptable? my god as a man I had no idea because nobody ever taught me in school that rape is wrong so I couldn't form an obvious thought that rape is bad but now I know...thank you crusader of male education, I am now a productive member of society and no longer the man beast I was.

- Said every sane man ever.

Lets not pretend men need some kind of in your face education to know rape is bad k.

I don't see how you can teach monsters though. They're sociopaths, it's not like they consider rape to be acceptable, they just don't care.
If you generalize, you're wrong.

A real solution would be increasing security around campus and making sure all sexual offenders get caught and kicked out

It should be obvious people know rape is unacceptable, but they still do it, and always will.

Honestly, these rape whistles won't work because they're beyond easy to deal with. What kind of rapist will let their victim pull out a whistle and blow it?

at least they're trying something.

if you don't think the whistles do anything to protect you from rape, do what you think you need to do to protect yourself from rape.

there's no way unsolved male-on-female rapes with a perpetrator still at large could ever cause a woman to feel anxious. never.

If anything, long lists of rape occurrences just makes me feel all secure inside

I should maybe get a whistle or a tazer or something, I feel as if I would be silly enough to walk around in the dead of night alone

If the rape victim doesnt blow the rape whistle, she has to blow the whistle of the rapist.

It's always amusing when these situations happen, that authorities seem to think that the way to stop rape is to make women change their behavior.

Anyway, if men were banned from alcohol, most rape cases would dramatically decrease.

source?

Also having something that alerts people nearby of an attacker is hardly changing their behavior. I'd take having something to alert people over having nothing anyday.

It's not just that, there are tons of things we're told to 'protect ourselves', which does mean changing your behavior, don't go out, don't talk to people you don't know, don't walk home alone, amongst others.

buy a bull horn, or take a self defense class, or carry a taser. do all three! don't do nothing. this is about stopping someone from raping you. you can blame men and take down alcohol after you've not been raped.

In most places this gets you arrested.

In general taking a break from the Rape train.

Screaming fire, or looking, and pointing at others works better than yelling rape or blowing a whistle.

If alone however doesn't do shit. I could teach a few self defense things easily to the ladies here but

1. I don't know most of you and don't trust you to not use it to attack. 2. Its a pain in the ass to do it purely by text means, though I do tend to pass on some stuff to a few people. And 3. Generally avoiding and seeing the problem is the best ways.

As to tasers, some people are trained to resist them, have a natural endurace to them, and you have to get close to use it. Which is a danger, a better means to use it is as a clicker, pull it out let it sparkle. And hope you don't have to use it. As in the time it takes you to bring it up, you might have a elbow in the face. In general cattle prods an stun sticks are more pratical, but you can't hide those really. In general tasers are useless crap only good for lighting up college students.

As to pepper spray. If the attacker is Military, Police, or mutliple sentenced convict, or a person with odd fetishes, Pepper spray and tear gas are useless, as in the former cases repeated expousre builds immunity.

Knew this one guy for example that for shits and giggles sprayed himself in the face with it, then wipe it off after pretening he burned his eyes out. Later that day he looks at some of us and went. "Want to know what this is good for?" *Sprays it on his beef and rice plate and eats it*

Its good on dogs however.

Thats common sense, we teach children the same things because it IS dangerous out there for everyone.
You can be mugged, raped, kidnapped, stabbed and thats any gender. The worlds a harsh place we can't expect it to become nice and soft, its easier to protect yourself than expect the world to change over night.

then do what you can, carry a damn stapler or something. even a metal butter knife is better than nothing at all. i have a set of keys i could even try to defend myself with, i could throw my phone too. there's probably some shit in my wallet that can hurt someone too.

all someone throwing around excuses and not even practicing caution is going to do is make sure you're not prepared for a rapist. just as i wouldn't be prepared for a mugger, or being beaten up.

None of that is 'dangerous' behavior.

I'd rather not. Firstly their is no prove that carrying something like that will actually do anything, once again whenever this topic comes up, people ignore the fact that the vast majority of rapes are by people known to the victim, and that the whole 'grabbed into a dark alley', are actually really rare.

Also, carrying a weapon makes you have far higher risk of being severe injured or killed, same as why having guns in the home increase danger, not reduce it.

no, what you're doing isn't the dangerous behaviour. it's what other people could be doing that's dangerous.

you're walking down the street at 1am, you're alone when BOOM- a masked man appears from behind a bush and bolts in your direction. what do you do?

you're talking to a group of strangers when one of them asks you to come with him/her to the hallway or around the corner, away from your friends in order to talk in private. what do you do?

a very popular event has just ended and it involved a lot of drinking and people, they're all out walking the streets. you want to go out and do something outside. these people are shouting, throwing things, and overall acting violent. should you go outside?

and that the whole 'grabbed into a dark alley', are actually really rare.

It's obvious that people should be taught that rape is an atrocity and that you should never do it, however that doesn't mean that we can try to prevent other incidents by teaching ways to avoid incidents.

Think about it, we tell people that stealing, murder and muggings are bad things to do, but we still tell people to not walk around with a large amount of cash, or to have too many valuables on at once, or even to walk through a bad area of town late at night.

There will always be people who do break the law in the most horrible ways, the amount will lessen if we properly educate people, but the fact that some will always break the law is a fact. As such there are ways that we can protect ourselves. That's why I never got the whole ''teach men to not rape rather than women how to protect themselves''. It doesn't make sense.

Yeah, takes a bit of time, some eye drops as well. Its like most poisons and spices, work with them long enough or your parents did, then you'll build up a resistence as well. ITs why some ethnic groups have some food allergies and the like that some don't.

I and some of the others had to do it, I didn't end up as well with him on it, but overall it just pisses me off.

A good countermeasure the victim can take is poking the rapists eye. Or just biting his nose off.

Brutality can be quite off-turning. Or on-turning. In the second case, you're fucked, literally.

I don't think there is a point in answering this question, since the answer is obvious? You try to get away, it's not like having a knife or whatever is going to change the situation, it depends on too many different things to say that, however there is a clear increase in risk with having them.

For example, what's a knife going to do if the guy is twice my size?

If I were walking down a street at 1 a.m, I'd have a self-defense weapon at hand and ready. There's no telling what type of person you'll run into, especially at that time. It would turn into a fight to the death

The stranger shouldn't be able to do anything to you, all you have to do is scream if he/she pulls something. Unless you're gagged/hit with chloroform the moment you walk around the corner. Which then basically turns into a kidnapping unless they do it on the spot- which would be stupid

Who the fuck would go in a dark alley?

bystander effect.

while the whistle is a good notion from the university, they're obviously not legally allowed to hand out self defense items. screaming will probably have even less effect than a whistle, actually.
