Long running anime are not usually in there. They make money by ratings, which is something those late night anime don't get a lot of.

The manga sold 65 million volume sold, which puts it number nine of all time manga sales in Shounen Jump.

The anime before the time slot change had good TV ratings. (Around 4 million and below) don't quote me on that though, I didn't check every single week.

So yes, Hunter x Hunter is very popular and loved in Japan. It sold 3 million last year, despite not releasing new volumes. I watched a Shounen Jump TV show thing, HxH ranked number 2 on the current generation list.

HxH is actually the 8th best selling manga of WSJ. Rurouni Kenshin is number nine.
The only True Ending is the Harem Ending.

For a manga that keeps going on Hiatuses and having no drawings that would definitely hurt the series a lot, it's very popular, but overall as a franchise, not very much.

Oh okay. It makes sense, since it's still selling while the manga that used to be below it aren't.

What?

This only makes sense if you are talking about the west.

Yeah, anyway the gap between those two series is only 5 or 10 millions volumes sold, i think. Besides, you also need to take into account the anime bump in 2011.
