Best shows to get 10 or 11 year old nephews into anime

I have nephews who are going on 11 this year. I can't exactly tell my siblings to give them Cowboy Bebop -- which is awesome, but likely to raise some parental objections.

What shows are decent to watch, will make a decent impression on parents, and don't have too much gore and sex?

Thanks.

Start with the classics.
Not Pokemon, to late for him to take that in.

Like, Howl's Moving Castle.
And Full Metal Alchemist is what I showed my brother.

SERIOUSLY, DO NOT LET THEM WATCH THAT, EDITING TO MAKE EVERYTHING CRYSTAL CLEAR

Seriously though, I pretty much second The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. FMA may not be a bad one either, depends how bad violence is. And if you can get away with FMA I'd definitely say To Aru Majutsu no Index wouldn't be bad, though they do have a tendancy to throw around a lot of technobabble.

And yeah, again pending on Violence the big three is never bad, from One Piece to Bleach to Naruto. Gundam Wing may be a little dense for children, though if all you're looking for is giant robots blowing each other up you can't really lose with it :P

The current crop of shounen stuff, will probably be more popular with your nephews as their more action orientated, but are unlikely to be big hits with their parents.

The ghibli movies will probably leave a better impression with their parents, as I still enjoy them now.

Definitely agreeing with the FMA recs, and Miyazaki, although I don't think they'd be too into some of his stuff (I'd start with Princess Mononoke, which I watched myself at 11, Nausicaa, and Castle of Cagliostro). You should probably double check anything I rec...

Maybe:
DB Kai
Sword of the Stranger (possibly too violent, I leave that for you to decide)
Batman: Gotham Knight

Definitely:
Gin'iro no Kami no Agito
Samurai7 (I don't remember anything inappropriate...)

I'd say to give your nephew some of this ones :
Shaman King
Naruto
Inuyasha
Yuu Yuu Hakusho
Dragonball Z
Maybe Bleach also

Anyway try and give him some less complicated anime's that he can just enjoy watching and not make him think to much .

Slayers: I'd avoid the OVA's and movies though, even though they are hilarious, because Naga is..well endowed and bouncy, but not ecchi in any sense; she's just big. If she's not too much, though, I'd have them solely watch them because they're short unlike the 78 eps of the TV show if length is another problem.

Full Metal Panic: It's funny and has big machines. What more could an 11 year old want?

Shakugan no Shana: just because it's good and fits what you want.

Personally, I grew up on Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptors, and Pokemon, but I don't know how kids nowadays would react to that.

Shakugan no Shana has an arc I definetly would not want someone's parents to see ( twincest arc)
And FMP has a few scenes that give it the R rating it has.

Allison & Lillia would be a good choice (it seems that you're watching it now yourself). Nice adventure, pretty funny at times, not bloody, not ecchi, the target audience is exactly 10-12 year olds (or a bit older), qualifies as a "family watch" as well.
Of more action-oriented anime, I'd recommend Seirei no Moribito. Something sports-related could be fine too - Bamboo Blade or Ginban Kaleidoscope, for example.
Then, there's always Aria series - a "universal solution" equally appealing to kids, teenagers, adults and grumpy old men and women. XD

Anything by Miyazaki, and as for a series, I think you should show them Chocolate Underground, Jing: King of Bandits, Naruto, and/or Beyblade.

Just like other people have said, I'll also recommend Naruto seeing as I got into watching that when I was 11/12 and what spurred me on to watch other anime series aswell. Hopefully you'll be getting them to watch it in subs right? They may think it's weird at first, I got into watching it before the dub was out anyway, so I didn't exactly have a choice. But at the end of the day most of the anime community will agree that subs are better than dubs.

You could also try the Studio Ghibli films as they're family friendly and seem to be readily available. I'm sure for some movies the adults would enjoy them just as much as the child. Such as Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro.

Does your nephew lean in any direction in terms of shows or cartoons he likes? It would help us recommend things beyond the standard list of every popular shonen anime.

In lack of that, though I'd probably go with something like Kekkaishi or Angelic Layer (anime, not manga). If the parents are one of those "violence is okay if it's against robots/monsters/things that don't bleed" types, Claymore might work -- but it might be stretching it a bit.
