After watching a few shows, most notably ecchi, I noticed a lot of over-exaggerated scenes where the girl would flash her tits and the guy would react with a nosebleed. Or in romance anime, such a big deal is made out of a kiss, a hug, or even holding hands. Seeing how these shows are made for the audience of early teens to around the early to mid 20's, I don't understand. What's the purpose over making such a fuss? Wouldn't it be better if they made some of these scenes a little more down to earth?

anime is known for being really over the top. It just comes with the medium. I do see what you're saying though, that would be refreshing

It's due to cultural difference. I think those scenes are exaggerated for even Japanese people(since this is how entertainment usually is) but it's downright nonsense for Westerners. That's due to Western world being more open about sexuality as opposed to the more conservative Japanese people. Also anime have a "weird" tendency to overemphasize things from what I've seen.

That's basically what I've always assumed, but I've never actually done any proper research to confirm it.

To OP:

Personally, I think it's hilarious, but only when it's actually done with proper intent. Some shows just toss it in, like it's a requirement, but others go even more over the top, basically parodying their own genre.

As a side note, there are plenty of down to earth anime you can watch. That doesn't necessarily make them better than other anime, though.

Why not watch The Mentalist or something? You can come back to anime after catching up on all the shows you used to watch before getting into anime, and when you do start watching anime again it will probably be hilarious again. Cause it sounds to me like you're just experiencing a lil burnout.

I only really notice that stuff in ecchi and rom-coms. That's why I tend to stay away from those genres

I haven't done any research myself, but that's what I figured. I always imagined Japan to be more open about sexuality than most countries.

And to answer your question, I haven't seen anime since several years back when Death Note was airing so to have a burn-out already would be crazy. I just find the over-exaggerated scenes to be slightly irritating to watch and want some feedback. Seems like it's the culture though.

The 'joke' is that sexual excitement can increase blood pressure, resulting in nose bleeds for some men. It's about as much of a requirement in ecchi and romcom anime as the Wilhelm scream is required in film.

Oh, well if that's the case, it's probably that you're just watching the wrong anime, lol... what genres/settings/tones do you like? Try checking out Mushishi, Sword Art Online and Mirai Nikki. Most people rate at least one of those with an 8 or above, none of them have over the top crap, and they're all fairly new. If you've already seen those, you can check out the suggestions tab on the pages dedicated to them on this site, and there's even a suggestions section in the forums. Sorry if you already know all this. Just assuming based on your post count that you're new like me.

Serious question, can these nose bleeds occur in real life? I heard about the possibility, but never seen it in person.

No, you're right. I am new to anime. I've watched anime several years back, but I only saw the really popular shows like Death Note, Elfen Lied, and a few others. I like everything I've seen so far, but if it weren't for the over-exaggerations, my anime experience would be that much better is all I'm saying.

I'm pretty sure that's just a euphemism

No, they can't. It's an old wive's tale (or really, just a folk tale) from Japan. Sexual excitement causing a rise in blood pressure is real, but it being so high as to rupture vessels in the nose and cause a nose bleed isn't.

Actually... I used to get nosebleeds all the time... not from arousal, but from anger... I had to have the inside of my nose cauterized...

You should watch Mayo Chiki

The frequent nosebleeds (and subsequent embarassment) of male anime characters are related to a Japanese folk-belief that sexual excitement in men leads to a change in blood-pressure, which in turn can cause a nose-bleed. There's a subsidiary belief more profuse the flow, the greater the excitement.

However there are some people with rare medical conditions that this does happen to. General population not really.

I've noticed exaggeration in anime and typically I dislike it. I don't like the exaggerated faces and such. I want things to be a bit more realistic. A few shows offer that, but overall a whole ton have a lot of the exaggeration.

Anime probably uses more hyperbole than any other medium. You can find it in pretty much every genre.

But for the OP; yeah these scene-exaggerations have been a signature trait of anime for the longest time to convey that type of humor. It's not meant so portray realism in any way. Exaggeration brings out a lot of new possibilities in the anime humor genre. But if that bothers you, you should watch regular sitcoms or something. :P

You haven't seen enough to know that not every Anime has that, especially the older ones.

The over-exaggerations are so supreme when it comes to sports anime though. You could talk about ecchi and nosebleeds, but I'm gonna talk about a sport... and a world to be saved with that sport.

Bam... that's much worse than your occasional nosebleed.

I have noticed this tendency as well, and when it is done right, I find it funny. At least in relatively recent anime, I've come to expect it from certain genres. Of course, anime creators are conscious of this and they often turn it into self-parody, which can be hilarious.

If you want to see anime overexaggeration taken to a ridiculously absurd extreme, just watch Eiken. It makes the stupidly huge boobs encountered in many other series look normal by comparison.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Mostly because it's supposed to be funny, imo. And kissing, hugging and holding hands may not be a big deal for you and many other people, but it is a huge deal for others. That's where people's ideals collide
