One Piece is brilliant in many ways - excitement, sense of adventure, epic battles, amazing plots, and most importantly - the ability to elicit deep emotions within you, whether it's to make you feel excited, laugh, cry, or rage, etc. One of those emotions that I find One Piece does really well at some points is emotional shock. And there are many moments in One Piece where certain events completely shocked me emotionally because they either seem to come out of nowhere or even if they were hinted at and justified, you did not expect Oda to actually pull the trigger.
And so, I wanted to discuss and share with you what I feel is my top 10 most emotionally shocking moments in One Piece. Note that this is pretty personal and is completely subjective to one's own experience, opinions, and feelings when watching it. So do feel free to disagree and share with me what you think are your own most personal shocking moments in One Piece.

When I first saw that Luffy can stretch his body parts.
The moment I watched One Piece, I pretty much got shocked straight off the bat when I saw that Luffy can stretch like Rubber. I mean, I've seen many different super powers and such like being able to fly, shooting energy beams, transformation, etc. But never before have I seen an ability where you can just stretch a body part like that and it was so ridiculous I had to pinch myself to see if I was dreaming.
I mean, this was literally my reaction when I first saw this happening. It was so ridiculous and hilarious that it made me pretty much fall in love with One Piece the moment I saw it.

When Nami "killed" Usopp and then later I found out that she stabbed her own hand.
I was relatively new to One Piece and I didn't know what direction One Piece was heading in. I hadn't known that Oda practically never kills characters off except in Flashbacks yet.
So when everyone believed that Nami was a good person with good intentions, and then I saw her stab Usopp, I felt like I received a cold electric shock. And then when I had just about to want Nami dead, I found out that she had stabbed her own hand and in actuality hadn't done Usopp any harm at all, it was a huge guilt-trip for me.
So good job Oda! You made me love a character, hate a character, and then love her again. *claps*

Brooke and his relevation about Laboon
Meeting Brooke, a living skeleton was a bit of a surprise in itself, but when you've seen a rubber man, a swordsman cut an entire legion of pirate ships in half, a man turn into smoke and back into a man, it's not too much of a shocker. Especially when you're familiar with the concept of devil fruits.
And then came the moment when that Brooke revealed himself to be one of the pirates that befriended Laboon. It came out of nowhere, but it was something made me cry tears in both nostalgia and shock when I saw that Brooke still hadn't abandoned his promise to return to Laboon and they kept their promise for over 50 years, going so far as refuse to die and even turn into a skeleton.
I initially didn't really care about Brooke joining the crew that much, to be honest. I mean, I thought it would be fun for a walking skeleton pretending to be a gentleman and a pervert, though we already had Sanji for that (except he isn't a skeleton). It was Brook's continued promise to his nakama of a whale that really turned on the waterworks for me and made me really want him to join.
And the backstory got me teary-eyed as well. Brooke was definitely a character that was done right and had me going up and down in an emotional rollercoaster of surprises.

Zoro taking on all of Luffy's "pain" when he realized he could not beat Bartholomew Kuma
It wasn't surprising in the fact that Zoro could pain and survive. He was aiming to be the world's greatest swordsman and he's already endured so much on this path. It wasn't surprising how far Zoro was willing to save his friends. All the straw hats care and love each other, even Sanji who always bickers and fights with Zoro almost stepped in place of Zoro to receive a death sentence from Kuma.
But even still, for some reason... When Zoro was willing to die and put to rest his dreams so that Luffy can achieve his, it shocked me. When Zoro took a small bit of the "pain" and coughed up blood and convulsed, it shocked me. And then when Sanji found him covered in blood from head to toe and Zoro said "Nothing happened', it shocked me a lot.

Blackbeard's dominance and rise to power
Blackbeard's name was mentioned early in the story of One Piece. We heard his name during the Drum Island arc when we first met Chopper. We saw him and heard him when Luffy and his crew were aiming to get into the island in the sky. And then we found out that he murdered his own nakama in order to gain his hands on the Yami Yami devil fruit.
So then Ace came after him and they fought on par. That alone was personally shocking enough for me. Blackbeard wasn't too much of a main character just then and he didn't do anything exceptional. He was a no-name with zero bounty, no fame, no major achievements, and so we never really knew the extent of his strength.
And then we found that Blackbeard trumped Ace, who was Luffy's brother. That really shocked me. In Oda's world of One Piece where the power of nakama and justice trumps everything, for Blackbeard, the "villain" who killed his own nakama to gain power, to win against the "good guy" that was Ace who came to teach Blackbeard a lesson was a first for me.
I expected Ace to win. I expected Blackbeard to lose and then have his quest end there. But then not only did Blackbeard not stop there - he went on and became a Shichikubai after handing Ace to the Marines. With the capture of Ace, he single-handed initiated the war between the Marines and Whitebeard and led to the chain of even more shocking events: He freed the level 6 prisoners of Impel Down, he took Whitebeard's fruit posthumously and gained a second devil fruit ability, and then he went on to become a Yonkou.
Having the truly evil Blackbeard rise to power is like a horror story come to life. And while there was no single moment to describe why he shocked me, the sum of the events that led to his rise to power is certainly one.

Ace is the son of Gol D. Roger
Very few saw this coming (kudos to those who did). We all heard it many times from Luffy's mouth - that Ace was Luffy's brother. And with Luffy being who he was, we know he rarely, if ever, lies. So when we heard that Luffy's dad was Dragon, the Revolutionary and his grandpa was Garp - the Vice Admiral of the Marines, we expected Ace to follow suit.
And then came the announcement by the marines that Ace was the sole-surviving child of Gol D. Roger. Personally this shocked me even more for #6 on the list, because that made me think Ace should have beaten Blackbeard even more if he was son of the man known as the Pirate King.
And this single event justified and wrapped it all together why the marines had to execute Ace no matter what, even though they almost never risk waging war against any of the Yonkou.
#4
Monster Chopper
Chopper - the cute and friendly reindeer, the caring doctor, the small and cuddly toy that resembles a harmless stuffed animal.
This was what literally went along the lines of my head during the Kumadori fight when his transformation occured:
Oh no, Chopper's going to lose! He's already used up two rumble balls and...
HOLY SHIT, WHAT THE F*CK, OH MY GOD, WHAT JUST HAPPENED? CHOPPER? IS THIS F*CKING CHOPPER? CCCHHOOOPPPPPPPPPEEEEERRRRRRR?!
So... yeah. lol I almost crapped myself when I saw one of my favorite characters become this... this MONSTER of a beast. I was a lot younger when I first saw this and since at that time, I watched the anime before reading the manga version, the sound effects, the fire, and his eerie eyes, it literally scared the living hell out of me and I had nightmares for days.
Again... I was young when I first saw this. Sue me.

The Straw Hat annihilated by Bartholomew Kuma and the events that happened after
Now, I know many of you, including me, expected this to happen sooner or later - the SH crew was overpowered and have won nearly every single battle they've fought. They're bound to suffer at least one complete loss.
But it was still shocking and heartbreaking to say the least to see everyone and Luffy try so hard to save their remaining crew member as they are "vanished" one by one by Kuma. And while defeat itself wasn't a shock, it was what was going to happen AFTERWARDS that made my hair stand on end.
I didn't know where the Straw Hats went after they were "vanished". I had a hunch that they were sent probably teleported somewhere since Bartholomew Kuma asked everyone "If you were going on a trip, where would you go?", but I wasn't sure if that was just a hypothetical question or if it had a deeper, most sinister meeting like "where would you like to go in the after life?".
It shocked me, it scared me because I didn't know what was going to happen and they were so close to the New World. And this event led to a chain of events from Impel Down to Marineford that completely decimated and broke Luffy down emotionally.
Shocking, very shocking moment when it happened, to say the least.
#2
Usopp Leaves Crew
Going Merry was issued a death sentence by the famous Shipwrights of Water 7, the greatest repairmen of ships in the world. She had no hope left of being fixed. Robin went missing, Usopp got kidnapped and got beaten up. The tension amongst the Straw Hat crew was at an all time high.
My heart was pounding when I saw Usopp and Luffy go at each other's throats when they argued and literally screamed at each other over what was to be done about Going Merry. And something tugged at my heart, a looming shadow that I tried to suppress and deny. It was a feeling, something I know was going to happen, but I didn't want to admit it.
And then it happened, Luffy broke the final string and said "If you don't like it, you might as well leave the f*cking crew." (without the f-word, but I wanted it for emphasis)
Sanji came for a last-ditch rescue and kicked the living hell out of Luffy, and cooled him down, with Luffy even going so far as to apologize even though he's the Captain of the crew. But at that time, the damage was done. And that gut-wrenching feeling I had came true. Usopp officially left the crew.
It was a brilliantly executed and emotionally shocking moment, especially with how it led to one of the most emotional fights in the history of the Straw Hats.
The crew had been together through rain or shine, through thick and thin, through so many moments where they held together even in the most hopeless moments and pulled through. They were invincible together and after Nami joined for real, they were such good friends that we all thought they would be with each other through the bitter end.
So when he left, it left utter and complete shock in my heart.
And the worst part of it was that we didn't know if Usopp leaving the crew was going to be permanent. Sure we know that Oda likes to mess with us for a while and so most likely he'll have Usopp back in a jiffy. But through the many, many episodes that he was no longer part of them, those few hours felt like an eternity to me.
Brilliant, Oda. Just Brilliant.
And finally... #1
Ace Dies
I know, I know... You saw this coming: Ace's Death - the most shocking moment in all of One Piece history.
In a storyline where Oda has characters survive in the most ridiculous fashions from being blown up by a bomb at point blank range that can supposedly decimate anything within a 5 km radius, Zoro surviving a cut by Dracule Mihawk known to cut whole ships in half, etc - no major characters had died so far except in flashbacks.
And so even when Ace was impaled by the asshole Akainu's flaming lava fist, I expected him to come back to life. But he didn't - Ace announcing that this was it for him, the vivre card vanishing completely, Luffy's mind and body completely shut down after his heartbreaking final cry of despair - it made everything real and was the literal "nail in the coffin".
This was when we knew that the death was permanent and smashed apart everything we thought predictable in One Piece. Whitebeard died, Blackbeard rose to power, and everything seemed grim for Luffy.
I didn't know what direction One Piece was going in after that and I didn't know if Luffy will come back the same. And I was in denial for weeks when I waited for the next chapters to come out, waiting and hoping for what I thought was a certain deus-ex machina to bring Ace to life. I prayed for it. I practically begged for it not to be true and for Ace to come back.
It never happened. And after anger and depression following the bargaining face, I finally accepted Ace's Death and made a shrine for him
Honorable mentions: And here are some other moments that for me didn't make the cut, that I found to be sort of shocking or at least pleasantly surprising.
Whitebeard's Death
The End of Going Merry
Usopp becomes Sogeking
Koby's Haki and his speech to stop the war
Trafalgar Law saves Luffy (and later allies with him)
Akainu becomes Fleet Admiral instead of Aokiji
Buggy becomes Shichikubai (well, at least for me, I saw this coming. He's basically the Mr. Satan of One Piece - I wouldn't even be surprised if he becomes Yonkou)
Luffy asks Usopp Sogeking to burn down the World Government flag and challenge the world.
Shirahoshi, the mermaid princess, is the living weapon known as Poseidon
Luffy's lineage
When Nami finds the 2nd half of the house from below the sky on sky island, leading to the unraveling of several shocking discoveries one after another - Thanks pkKodama
Well, that's it for me. What do YOU guys feel are the most emotionally shocking moments of One Piece for you?
Let me know by posting below! Enjoy the discussion!
pkKodama said: For me, the most emotionally shocking moments are, in Skypiea, when Nami finds the second half of that house and Brook's revelation about Laboon.
Ah yeah - that part where Nami finds the second half and discovers the truth about this island - I completely glossed over that! That deserves to be in the honorable mention. I'll add that. Thanks! :)
1. Sabo's return. Many fans predicted he would come back, but not in this current arc. In fact Sabo has been one of the most discussed One Piece, due to his supposed death.. people always made jokes, when by claiming that characters who yet to be revealed or shadowed were him. In fact if someone stated that Sabo were to appear in Dressrosa, they would have been laughed at. It was also a huge shock, esp. since there was no kind of hint that he would be appearing in the arc. Now in terms of his appearance, history with the revolutionaries and his combat prowess, he has become one of the most interesting characters.
was a huge shock, especially when there was no kind of hint. Luffy's reaction was how I felt.. it was
2. The Ohara Holocaust - Extremely sad. From Aokiji murdering Saul, to the innocent civilians get murdered by Akainu's orders. In terms of scale it was the best One Piece Flashback, and it was a long awaited flashback. I was sympathized with Robin.
3. Nami's flashback and life. I didn't expect her flashback to be so sad or life as being a member of Arlong's crew to be that sad.
4. Dragon and Garp related to Luffy. It wasn't that shocking since it was foreshadowed, but him being one of the best marines ever was, and someone who has a serious demeanour like Dragon was.
5. Bon Clay remaining in Impel Down. This did surprise me and was quite sad, since he deserved to escape out of everyone, from saving Luffy's life, when the likes of Buggy and Mr 3 were quite the opposite.
6. Brook and Laboon. Completely caught me off-guard. I didn't think much of Laboon, but when it turned out Brook was looking to go back, it added more depth to his situation and to Luffy's promise.
7. Kuma turning into a 'mindless robot'. I am surprised this is overlooked by fans. I find it sad at the time, he could never tell Luffy or the rest of the strawhats who he was and was resented. Plus the whole losing your memory thing.
8. The post war arc. This entire arc was a shock. It was that Luffy's life was explored further, esp. the Goa Kingdom where the high and mighty look down on average citizens.
9. Law targeting Doflamingo the whole time. There was always something to the alliance that I felt wasn't being explained, but when we find out Law just wanted to take down Doflamingo, and even acknowledging that he would lose his life in the process shocked me, esp. when I thought one of his priorities was to get One Piece. I am looking forward to his backstory.
Wow, that was quite a fantastic list! I really like how well thought-out and even unique the moments you picked! Many of them I would not have thought of and I even want to add a few to my honorable mentions list.

I guess I could add the Ohara Holocaust and Buster Call to my Honorable Mentions. :) It was a bit of an emotional shock for me as well, and it made Robin's struggle all the more lonely and sad. And the Buster Call's complete demolition of the entire island was quite terrible to say the least - it reminded you of how horrible humans can be.
Nami's backstory is very sad, especially the part when she stabbed herself continuously in the arm in frustration and helplessness. I would add that to the list had I not already mentioned something from Nami's own Arlong arc already :).

This was quite emotional for me as well. And I approve! For me personally, however, it's not so much shocking as Bon Clay did that once already and that was a pleasant surprise rather than an emotional shocker.

Wow, actually I did overlook that! I can't believe I did! I'll put this in the honorable mentions list. If I had a #11, this would be it. Good eye. :)

I quite look forward to his history as well. Law is one of the most popular non-SH characters in One Piece and he is for a reason! He is shrouded in mystery and there are so many questions I want to ask about him - namely, where the hell is his crew and what happened to them?
10. Brook and Laboon
9. Luffy VS Usopp
8. Doflamingo "killing" Bellamy at Mock Town
7. All pirates that I thought they were death at Impel Down
6. Straw Hats declaring war to Goverment
5. Robin "leaving" the crew
4. Ace's death
3. Discovering that Upper Yard is part of Jaya
2. Galley La betrays Iceburg
1. Shanks stopping war at Marineford
