I am looking to find new anime that has a more serious atmosphere and feeling because lately I have been watching some laid back anime. Some nice examples of anime that have a serious feeling are ef: A Tail of Memories, Shuffle, Death Note, Madoka, School Days (LOL), Shinsekai Yori and Yosuga no Sora (LOL). Thanks

Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

Seirei no Moribito, it's serious, but kind of relaxing too at some parts.
Ergo Proxy
Psycho Pass
Wolf's Rain
Rainbow
Steins;Gate is pretty serious for the most part, maybe not the beginning episodes because the mc seems a little silly at first.
Shiki
Fate/Zero
Suisei no Gargantia

These are all pretty "serious" I think since there's not really any silliness or comedy.

that series barely took itself seriously outside of a few of its final episodes and was generally a light hearted sci-fi

Yeah you know what I was pondering about whether or not to recommend it but I guess I was mainly thinking about the first few and last few episodes.

Grave of the Fireflies. Won't be finding many laughs in that, heh. Midori, no humor just really messed up imagery.

On a less depressing/morbid note..

Eve no Jikan is about androids and the way the protagonist perceives them which IIRC was played pretty straight, I liked it.
Zipang is good too, a military anime about a modern JMSDF cruiser being zapped back to WWII and their debating whether or not to get involved.
Yomigaeru Sora follows a guy who joins a helicopter rescue division.
Allison to Lillia is lighter but still pretty straight/serious.
Kemono no Souja Erin is a fantasy type about a young girl who gets involved in raising beasts used by the military, follows her life as she grows up.
Moonlight Mile is about a pair of guys who want to become astronauts. Good show, but be forewarned it has some nudity/sexual scenes. Not a hentai though, not even close, just has a few racy bits here and there.
Spice & Wolf is a story about a merchant who meets a supernatural wolf and travels with her. Lots of commerce/politics intrigue, very good show
Gilgamesh was good, but I'm not entirely sure how to describe it lol
Princess & the Pilot is about a fighter pilot beleaguered by racial issues who has to fly a princess through enemy territory.

K A T - Legenda Zza Światów - wstęp:
W dawnych czasach, które już niemal całkowicie przeminęły, magia i posługujące się nią istoty,
a także zaklęte stwory i złowrogie, nieokiełznane bestie
zamieszkiwały Zza Światy, pomiędzy którymi można było odbywać podróże.
Wiedza na ten temat była jednak przekazywana wyłącznie nielicznym wybrańcom.
Wielcy bohaterzy musieli stawać do walki ze złem, w obronie dobra,
by przezwyciężyć zagrażające równowadze mroczne widmo ciemności i chaosu
i zaprowadzić niezbędny wszem wobec praworządny ład i porządek.
Oto legenda jednego z nich…

Berserk.

It's dark, its gritty, and I'll be damned if it isn't one of the most mature and serious animes out there. The manga is something else, but just watch the first episode of the anime and you'll be hooked from there.
