I wonder what the largest number of manga read by a MAL user is?

(Sorry if there's already been a thread about this)

Well... you can always check. I mean, the search function isn't that hard to find. Or use, for that matter.

Honestly though, do you think his list is 100% legit? I honestly don't think it's even possible to read that many series in a life time. Seems like an attempt at just getting people's attention. I'm sure he does in fact read a lot, but I question if he's actually read 9,000 series...

That's reading at least 1 series a day for 24 years straight without any slow down.

edit: Oh jesus, and I didn't even look at space cowboy's which is over double that - and that's before factoring in anime.

^ He seems to be on his 20-something, so it would be possible to reach that number if he really always life in Japan where basically all the titles is pretty easy to get compared to in other country...

Most of the manga title is spacecowboy's list is under the PTR though so it isn't counted~

^ But then you have to take into account his anime, which if yo do the math would be 4 years of constant anime watching without sleeping or taking breaks. Combine the two and that's basically 30 years of doing nothing but reading manga and watching anime... I don't care how much someone likes the medium, that's not possible. And it's not like that all he does, because he's still able to find the time to make 10,000 forum posts. By his own admission, he is 29 and saw his first anime when he was 3, and started "collecting" when he was 7.

The math doesn't add up, it's just not possible. That's not even considering school or work.

People read manga at their own pace. I'd hardly trust MAL's system of calculating how many days of manga a person has read. Plus, I'm pretty sure a huge chunk of his completed manga are probably either one-shots or a volume long.

I often skip through the episodes of anime if I thought the anime was crappy but still want to finish it.

And in MAL calculation the time needed to finished 1 volume manga is 0.05 day=1.2 hours, while for some people at least for me that much time can be used to finished 2-3 volume.

It is possible if he can read fast and likes to skip the OP/ED/preview clips like how I usually watch anime, hence the actual hours spent is less than what is shown.

And if someone really like something, it is possible that they spend as much time as possible in doing it. I used to do homework while watching anime. When going to school usually I bring at least 10 volumes manga that's why my bag is always bulky and I read them when I'm waiting for lecture to start, when eating during lunch, inside public transport, whenever I can. And at home you'll rarely see me without my laptop or book/manga on my hand.

And getting high forum post is actually pretty easy... it's not like all his post needs minutes/hours to write. Like me, I get that much only because I like requesting cards in clubs and joining their event and I don't even spend much time on the forum or MAL.

No, it's not possible.

-His list has 385 TITLES of novels in them. And novels' chapters in mal are counted like manga chapters when it comes to how much time to read them, even though that even by reading 100 pages per hour it would still takes yu 3 hours to read one volume.
-I said 385 titles; lots of titles are above 10 volumes. And some are far higher.
-most of those titles don't have their chapter counted on mal; so when you put them in your list, the "time spent" do not move AT ALL.
-He recorded in his list titles like guin saga as "completed".
Peoples that know a little about light novels probably already exited this thread after that line above by saying something like "yeaaah, right.... As if that list is legit". Guin Saga is 130 VOLUMES long. And that's only one title in his list. He has titles like Owari no chronicles listed too, which have volumes that go as height as 1000 pages per volume.
And like I said above, LN usually don't have their chapter counted. Obviously, those two above don't have them too.
Even by counting 100 pages per hours, just with those two titles, you already have more than 500 hours of reading not listed by MAL. And that's just two titles. By counting an average of 3000 pages by titles (which is a pretty standard average for LN, considering that there are in his lists titles with far more than 20 volumes as well as titles with only one), just his list of LN would need almost 500 DAYS to read. And most of those don't even bring a single MINUTE in the time spent counter of MAL.
And obviously, most titles of LN aren't available in MAL. So if he read japanese/lives in japan really , he should have read a lot of titles which aren't on MAL at all anyway.

Also, even by skipping the ending and opening, you only gain 3 minutes per episode, which still means around 90% of the time spent in anime as correct.

And he didn't even list his anime dropped. So he watched 50% of MAL anime database (lol), has read 30% of manga database, and thousands of LN volumes. And either never dropped a title or dropped the rest but didn't list it, hmmm right?

"It is possible if he can read fast" -> please, no. Just, no. Not with titles like guin saga in there as completed that don't even count in the time spent.

If DateYukata really has watched all that anime and manga, all I can say is wow, what a waste of time.

FYI, I read the last volume of Harry Potter in only about 1.5 hours, so 1.2 hours for one volume Light Novel it is more than enough. Ofc, I don't know how complicated the story of Guin Saga is that it may need hours per volume

Actually it's the anime list that I'm doubting a little. I think some of his completed anime entry is from titles that he watched when it was airing in TV (like Doraemon for example) and even if he watched the last episode, I doubt he is able to watched every single episode >.>

Why specifically that book and not a simple number of page per hour of what you usually do? I don't get it, did this book was special about how fast you could read it? Also, isn't that book 600+ pages long? If so, then that means 400 pages per hour, or less than 10 seconds per page.

I won't say that this isn't true. But this is definitely not "being fast". This is more among the line of "being incredibly and ridiculously fast" if that's the case. It's better not to assume than someone else can read at that speed. I don't think I ever saw someone around me reading faster than me, and even by reading book in my mother language, I'm far from those numbers.

Also, this doesn't change anything. That's still thousands of books with each of them taking hours which aren't counted in the numbers, and that's still only what can be registered in MAL. Like I said, do not compare the anime list on mal and the LN list. You can pretty much list any anime you watched on MAL. Someone who read hundred of titles in LN cannot do the same, and would probably not even be able to register half of them. So, someone who can register almost 400 titles of LN on MAL will have read far more than that. If someone has read 400 titles registered on MAL and says to you that he hasn't especially read any LN not registered on MAL, that's an obvious lie. Even me with less than 30 titles read I was forced to do submit several MAL pages by myself; and for some to do other pages of other stuff like manga and so on due to specific rules for creating a LN page on MAL. Just imagine for someone having read hundred of them.

I say it again; if you add the time spent with LN, manga, and anime, this is just impossible. You can't just say that the time spent counter on the manga list n MAL is far higher when that thing don't even count properly the LN volumes read by the users. In fact, MAL users reading LN will have a tendency to have that "time spent" number too LOW compared to the real time spent, and not the contrary like you said.
