Am I missing something? Do people in Japan often go on office supply rampages or something? Off the top of my head, Bakemonogatari, Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge, and now this, feature characters with some kind of weird obsession with them. Was there some root cause to this increasing trend, or is it just becoming a new archetype fad(sadistic tsundere scissor users)?

I sometimes carry a pair of scissors for protection.

Sometimes late at night in the middle of a storm, you can find me practicing the Art of Scissors in the rain.

I think there are like 3-4 series with scissors involved. And that's far from being a fetish.

Scissors.

Also in six live movies over the past 8 years, adding to the list above. The "scissor attacker" is one of the great urban legends of Japan, and has appeared in other animation and Manga including Jigoku Sensei Nūbē and Nurarihyon no Mago.

I guess scissors seem less violent in a sense and contribute to the weirdness and randomness of japanese anime. I agree, maybe the swords got too mainstream hahahaha. Also scissors are also less noticeable and people won't run away from you if you have them. They aren't illegal and I guess they're trying to make this a trend. But I hope people don't start walking around and attacking each other with scissors D: That would just...

<have never seen this anime but notice bakemonogatari here too>
I think it's because they're easier obtainable. In RL(?) type-settings people aren't gonna walk around public with actual weapons
It's also a play on people actually do similar to these things in schools as jokes
So I think it's just a level of sneakiness and power mixed together
sexual incest in nisomonogatari - no one bats an eye
romance incest in SAO - everyone loses their minds

That's like saying people have a fetish with chainsaws too because there's a connection with a serial killer in texas who happened to use one to make mince, dude c'mon.

I had not realized that chainsaws were depicted in multiple other stories instead of a single movie franchise. Had Kuchisake been the "only" example of scissor use, your comparison would have had some validity, however if chainsaws started showing up in other shows, none of which are related to Texas, wouldn't you admit that this might indicate something?

The whole point of my comparison is that it wasn't supposed to have validity as to show you why yours does not make sense, and as for your question no I do not think it would indicate something anything. Point stands a few random scissor "acts" doesn't equal a new fetish.

Uhm, my point was responding to your point that 4 or 5 shows weren't enough. I provided 3 more examples, (including one that was an entire franchise in and of itself). How does this not make sense?

So 4 or 5 didn't show anything, and now you are saying 7 or 8 don't show anything. How many shows do we need? 10? 20? Let's set the goalpost instead of you just shifting them.

1 - My point was not that 4 or 5 shows weren't enough.
2 - One of my points was fetishes isn't in any way proportional to the amount of shows that exhibit them.
3 - It does not make sense to me because I don't understand the correlation you seem to imagine.
4 - You can derive a couple of plausible explanations for the use of scissors in anime from a couple of other posts in this thread.

Very true, if there is a fetish, not only does it exist in Japan, but it probably already has a magazine devoted to it.

I've been so confused by this i had to make an account an respond to the first forum topic i found after searching "Why is japan obsessed with scissors?"

I really don't get it. did something happen in japan that stirred this? I mean 1 anime per season i figured was weird but not quite alarming....But this season has 3 anime shows with scissors in them.

Inu To Hasami wa Tsukaiyou
Rosen Maiden (2013)
Gatchaman Crowds

now, ive never seen original gatchaman or rosen maiden so it may not be an increase in how many shows have ever had scissors in it. but having all this in the same season is definitely an increase in frequency and attention....so...why?

Don't forget Danganronpa ...did anyone mention? That's also new this season, and has a scissor-wielding weirdo woman. This easily puts it at 5+ scissors snapping series this season, alone. I had been wondering about this myself about a week or so ago - just found this post... I can't recall many (if any) series from the 80's or 90's that contained ANY scissors as weapons. I have a hard time thinking of anything from 10 years ago, either, that did. I am curious as to whether or not anyone can list off some older series that contained the same use of scissors as weapons. Otherwise, I feel fairly convinced that this is a very recent trend, though I have no idea how this reflects upon modern Japanese culture.

That being said, I would repeat that I feel this is a current trend in anime, but a FETISH definitely has other implications and I'm not sure what I think about that (or if the OP had intended that by the use of the word "fetish." Perhaps "obsession" might be more appropriate?). I have zero knowledge of the Japanese (or any, for that matter) BDSM scene, and am also more than willing to leave it that way -- especially if there are scissors involved.

As far as plausible options, I feel that there are many other equally interesting but effective alternatives to scissors. Even Senjougahara had a utility knife on her when first crossing paths with Araragi. Pens, pencils, protractors, pocket knives and all kinds of other small objects (or even sticks or umbrellas) would seem to do well also, but I am definitely left with the impression that (if no one else) scissors have shown up as more than just paper-cutting instruments in many series over a very short period of time.
