| I'm not trying to step in to the world of fansubbing but rather i have noticed not many people have been taking the liberty to subtitle dvd episodes lately and so i was just wondering if it is possible to use a program to take apart an mkv or avi and impose the subtitles to a Raw dvd episode? ...or do you guys know a good website to download a soft sub file thats NOT tokyo tosho. |

| Any decent MKV tool should allow you to extract the sub file(s). As for AVI, no. Because AVI isn't a container that (natively) supports softsubs. |

| There are OCR suites that can rip hardsubs timed, but it's probably a lot more effort than you're willing to put in. More work than just taking the .ASS out of an MKV, at any rate. |
| Yeah google works wonders :P I just downloaded mkvmerge v2.3 and was staring at it for a good 10 minutes untill i figured out it only MERGES the content into an MKV. So i picked up MKEwizard v1.2 to pull out the ass fiiles. ...its a relatively easy process : its a small effort just so i can enjoy my anime Unedited and uncensored: NSFW...barely Well not only are dvd versions uncensored or less foggy, the picture is much clearer and brighter from what i have seen. EDIT: figured out how to use MKVmerge better so i jus need that program :) |

| Playing with the .ass is helpful too especially when subbers dont want to use a 1280x720 video and they end up using some 704x400 ugliness ...and to those people say its only upscaled, try watching a both versions on a 50" tv screen, you WILL see the difference. |

| A DVD release can't be 1280x720. DVDs don't support HD resolutions. Though uncensored versions are always welcome; heavy fog, shadows, darkness etc are overdone. :( |

That's not always the case; DVD resolution is very small, whereas in (jp) Tv you can get 1080p HD raws (however many groups still live in the 90's and encode the videos to a "standard" 170MB per ep thus fucking up the nice quality raws). As for mkvmerge, there is an extra tool in the folder called mkvextract, you can get the subs with that (however it works like shit in Vista and they haven't updated it for years). There is also a variant of Virtualdub called virtualdubmod (very very very outdated) which can *edit and extract tracks from mkvs, but many of the new mkvs don't work with it. To edit subs you can use Aegisub. MKV is a great container, but it lacks decent software to work with it. |

| It might take 85% of your RAM to run an .mkv (that's more than likely the h.264 codecs fault, not the .mkv container though), but that's not the case with everyone. It is true that for some people .avi is the way to go, but in no way can I agree that it's the best container. |

Man, it took me a while to stop laughing my ass off. (no offense intended) - "85%" ram is something very relative. In my pc, the current video I have loaded is using ~80 MB in mpc, which is something around 1% of my total ram. - fansubs using MKV usually use this container for their H264 version, which takes up some more resources than their AVI version which usually uses xvid. H264 is way superior and often offers more quality than the same sized file in xvid. - Avi is inferior to mkv in every way. Your "85%" argument is not valid at all, dude, you gotta do better: something like this works http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_container_formats - MKV supports different audio/subtitle/video tracks, being able to contain different languages and split videos by episodes, (to which you can easily skip to) - Avis are hardsubbed, which means the subtitles are part of the video and you can't remove them (unless you load them sepparetely through a sub file). - etc.. |

| hah... well the only time i get that 'double subtitle' that you were complaining about is on bad DVD rips. Its apparent you dont know how to use the 'hide subtitle' option but its not that hard to fix. I like MKV merge since i can acutally fix minor details and/or use a higher quality video instead of the poor junk that gets circulated... I wish standard def could just die. Well all tv is going DIGITAL so i guess that's one step toward the right direction :) I also figured out how to use those stupid filter effects and they make quite a diffaerence |

It's not been widely adopted by the fansubbing community for nothing. Some people will undoubtedly have troubles with it, but all of them, guaranteed, are a problem with codecs, player, or machine capability. My computer is three years old now, which is relatively ancient in computational terms, and I have zero issues with any MKVs, HD or otherwise. I can 'rewind' to exact timeframes, I can play them (even high bitrate HD) while running games, or run several videos at once, all with no problems at all. Before you blame the format, how about you try to actually resolve your problem. You're probably using VLC or something anyway. |
