I'm intrigued with Higurashi, and i want to watch it, but i'm a little skeptical (or probably scared, I can't stand horror movies) of how much violence is in the show. It's really starting to get to me too. I suggested it to a friend who wanted a violent anime. I have Higurashi's second season in my FAL team because i know the rest of you love loli girls killing each other in a small village with some sort of curse. And i have some Higurashi references in Chapter 3 of my Starlight story. (Sola fanfic)

So, how much violence is there? Would it be considered an MA or R show for starters?

There's a lot of violence, but not a whole lot of gore as I remember. There are some scenes that'll definitely make you wince though. But the focus of the show is more psychological horror than blood and guts.

A lot!! Well, it was a lot for me... I haven't watched many violent tv shows, so Higurashi came as a bit of a shock for me. There really is quite a lot of disgusting stuff but, if you can get past that, it's a pretty intriguing show. The violence didn't really bother me too much (you can always skip it if it gets too bad); the mystery aspect is what catches your attention, so you're more preoccupied with trying to figure out what's going on.

It's not nearly as bad as people make it sound... Not sure why people are always exaggerating the violence in this show. There's a few moderately violent scenes. Usually nothing is really shown. There was only one scene that stuck out, and it wasn't that bad. Honestly, I'd go with a PG13 rating.

It's not as bad as Elfen Lied, but more than your average fighting series. Some scenes can be pretty graphic, especially if you're watching the DVD versions since they're uncensored.

Yeah, I absolutely hate horror movies/really scary stuff and I absolutely love Higurashi. Sure there's blood, but it's nothing awful like I was imagining. There's...two..things that come to mind that made me wince, but the art style kind of...overrides the gruesome? Like, if this was in Monster's art style I'd still be having nightmares :P

I dunno how spoilery this is so I'm going to tag it.

Well, i tried watching the first episode last night. At 9pm. By myself. And it was raining with some thunder outside. The first 20 seconds with...

didn't phase me at all. Then as the OP was rolling, thunder hit the internet modem and screwed up the connection. Actually, in my area, it's been raining non-stop for the last couple days, and i can't reload the first episode. Is it a sign?

Elfen Lied? I got a torrent for that, and i thought that was not as violent as Higurashi. Well, i've gotta start watching one of them tonight.

Blood wise, there actually isn't much...

implicit yet excessively disturbing scenes on the other hand, a good amount.

I mean, there is no where near as much violence as elfen lied.... however there is a grapic scene of a guys intestines in a ditch, and a scene which involves fingernails

It's not really that bad, now that I think about it. xD
I think there were three scenes in total that were pretty graphic...and only one of those actually had me looking away for a bit. (That was the fingernail scene.)

I'd forgotten about the intestine thing. o-o;

Ok, i've seen the first episode. And apparently the 3 graphic scenes are;

1. the fingernails. I think one character has to rip 3 fingernails off someone else. (most afraid of that)
2. The intestines in a ditch. That seems ok.
3. Someone commits suicide by stabbing him/herself in the head. A lot.

So what episodes are these scenes in? And i'm going to watch episode 2-3 today.

Edit: Want to see Higurashi and Sola mixed together? Wait until i post Chapter 3 of Starlight. I'll give links to any of those who want them.

The scene in Rena's arc ("purple haired chick's demise") was the worst for me....you'll see what I mean...

As for your question, fingernails are in Shmion's arc, about halfway through the series iirc?
Intestines.... I don't remember when they were, I just remember them.
The stabbing suicide is also in Shmion's arc. That's the most gruesome arc altogether imo.

Man, QFT keeps appearing. I don't know what it means.

Whether Shion is better than Mion or not, i'm not too sure.

(Episode 5's opening scene was awesome, why am i being such a scardy cat in the first place?)

You might wanna put a spoiler tag around that one, Yoshi.

And QFT means Quoted For Truth, unless some others take it out of its original meaning and change it cos they think that's cool ^^.

And I believe the nail scene is not in episode 17, I'm pretty sure it happened somewhere before episode 10.

Done. A spoiler tag is on my last post.

No, i think that scene isn't before 10. I know pretty much everything violence-wise, but i don't know much about the plot, (especially the answer arcs, haven't glanced at episode summeries or anything) so there should still be some surprises for me.

Loading Episode 6 now.

You know, i already knew that. Both the fact that

Rena is my fav so far. Watching Episode 7 right now. Mion's face in the ladder scene qualifies for 8/10 signs for madness.

Finished Episode 7. Shion takes out the other two signs of madness.

Well, i finished this show last night.

Red Paint rating: 7/10. A good amount of blood, but not over-the-top.

The first season was simply astounding. I've said that in my review too. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni deserves a 10. (only my second 10 given out, my first was Samurai Champloo)

I take it you are on the younger end of the age spectum? I watch 90% of the anime I watch alone at ~1 a.m....

But yeah, comapring Higurashi to Elfen Lied, Elfen wins on gore, but Higurashi wins on scare factor. Not that its very scary, Elfen Lied just isn't scary at all.

imo the second season is even better. GAR K1, enough said.

Correct. Only 15 years old. I don't really feel like watching Elfen Lied at the moment. The gore in Baccano is used to better effect, and I've heard it's just overused in Elfen Lied.

This thread is an ages old. Hahaha!

Well, just like Yoshi said, there isn't so much blood in Higurashi. Just 7/10. The more is the scary faces and the maniacal laugh of the awesome seiyuus w/c now I'm praising them for their talents.

Mai Nakahara as Rena = win.

I'd like to add that Higurashi Ki barely has any violence. The remaning questions from Season 1 will be answered in Kai though.

Hahaha! I never thought that the soft voiced Furukawa Nagisa is a hell of a maniacal laugher.

Not to mention, Chidori Kaname too! Hahahahah! Yukino Satsuki seiyuu of both Mion and Shion. Really, how can she do that?! Voicing both characters at the same time?! And also with those Maniacal Laughter of Shion then screaming of Mion?! Hahaha!
